In Israel, the Haredim community (or "Those in awe of God") lives separately from the rest of Israeli society. Dressed all in black, these ultra-Orthodox practise a strict form of Judaism, cut off from modern society. In cities like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, they have their own neighbourhoods, shops and schools and do not hesitate to challenge the authorities. Our correspondents in Israel went to meet members of this inward-looking community that’s often tyrannical towards its own.

These are the most unfriendly people I’ve encountered on my visit to Jerusalem. The Arabs were the friendliest.

While travelling in the UK I met a guy in the hostel who was from an Orthodox family in Jerusalem, Every time we spoke he would get surprised about pretty simple things and then have to look it up on the internet. He'd been so isolated his whole life it was as if he was from 100 years ago, and came to visit us in a time machine.

Lived in Israel 22 years ago and not much has changed with these fundamentalists. Most live off the state or donations, intimidate all who try to leave, repress women and have a backward outlook. In Israel when searching for answers I went to a gathering once of ultra orthodox and even at 18 years old I knew something was very wrong.

I'm also an American and an Orthodox Jew. I fully agree with you. In fact EVERY major Jewish leader in history had a job. Like Maimonides for example, he was a Physician, a Scientist, Second in command to the Sultan, Astronomer, etc.

The disdain and disgust these people show to those outside of their community is frightening. If you live in New York State you can experience it for yourself if you turn down the wrong street in Queens, or get lost traveling to up-state NY, or if you walk into the wrong business in Manhattan's diamond district. I have many Jewish friends, but none are of the Hasidic sect. My Jewish friends don't have friends from the ulta orthodox community. Regardless of who you are, how you look, and what teachings make up the core of your faith; if you aren't one of them, to them, you are just an animal.

It would be a kindness if people who held such extreme views would keep to themselves. It seems that real tragedy regarding extreme thinking is that sooner or later it is visited on the innocent through no fault of their own. For myself, I have grown very tired of the world being held hostage by advocates for extreme positions and well as the puppet-masters Behind the extremists who fan the flames for their own agendas. I am Muslim but as I get older I get more inclined to thoughts that suggest me that any religion on this earth is a man-made, probably to be used onto us by other group of men... I do not know all the answers why, but I more and more feel and understand that no-one can truly tell if stories on Holy Scriptures are true and from God. Yet, I strongly believe that there is a higher intelligence than human beings, I do not deny that all around me was simply created by itself.

I worked with an orthodox Jew and he's a great guy - worked hard, friendly with everyone, super helpful - and even he admitted most of the ultra orthodox sects are "nuts"

Very biased. I am a convert to Roman Catholicism. I was not raised in any faith. More or less an atheist. I am respectful to my Jewish friend's beliefs and don't discuss my faith unless a person directly asks me. Even then, I use common sense and don't use vocabulary that may conflict with their beliefs, doctrine. I don't wear my crucifix when I attend their holiday celebrations. Being committed to an orthodox life is difficult. I totally understand why people want to escape from it. However, I would not blame G_d. It's us, humans, that is the problem. Everyone should serve in the IDF and not be a burden to society.

I’m a Breslev Chassid, the same type of jew of that happy musician. We believe in making people happy trough music and mainly by praying to G-d with your own personal words. The ultra-orthodox, however, are not all like that. They decided to show Mea Shearim, but it’s a neighborhood seen as radical even by other religious jews. I’m sad that women felt guilt for her sins to the point of leaving faith. I feel happy for the accomplishments, like charity and kindness, instead of feeling guilty for human mistakes like greed and gluttony. Judaism teaches there is sin, of course, but also teaches that G-d forgives immediately when you repent and apologize, and not a second later.

So if Jews are entitled to this place where where ever they live in the world, what happens to ivanka trump who is a Jewish convert, is she entitled to that land as well, what about other Jewish converts?
