Il Divino
Francesco Canova da Milano (18 August 1497 2 January 1543) was a virtuoso Italian lutenist and composer of the Renaissance. Born in Monza, near Milan (hence the "da Milano"), he was heralded throughout Italy and Europe and was the foremost lute composer of his time. He left several books of music for the lute.

I have attended many classes and concerts given by great artists such as Hopkinson Smith, Nigel North, Paul O'Dette and Jakob Lindberg, but I think that your playing of this fantasia is one of the most beautiful that I have heard. Lovely tone, sensitive shadings of dynamics and very subtle rubato. Deiightful. Don

Yes, Mr. Bengsten, puts all the names you give to route on this piece. In fact, I would submit to you that Mr. Bengsten is the better at the rarified Renaissance Italian contrapuntal than anyone else, OR if you do not like comparisons, let me say it is as good as it can be, here. Most play this musick solely by the fingers for the brain, without any soul or heart in mind.

And, yes, Mr. King, there is rubato, everywhere here, and, no, it ain't subtle. In fact, if you play this, or any pre-20th century musick without 'rubato' then you play it cold, inhumane, and sterile, which, though it may please your professors, will be ignored by everyone else, as who wants to listen to just a succession of accurate notes with nice tone?

The lute seems to have so many voices as compared to the guitar. My soul melts with the lute. Such peaceful depth of soulful passion.

In my youth I studied guitar at the Norwegian Music Academy but after finishing studies I dropped the guitar and started playing the lute and I'm mostly self-educated. I have attended some masterclasses with Paul O'Dette, Nigel North and Hopkinson Smith. I must admit that I'm very influenced by Hopkinson Smith and the norwegian luteplayer Rolf Lislevand.

Dear Trond, Just listened to your sublime rendition of this Ricercare & I agree with all the other compliments below. You may be interested, I'm making a big size lute at present, to be tuned in D or C, 8 course. Using up the last of my wood. Very best regards, Chris.

This piece sounds quite different on a 10 course lute. In some ways I like it more, in other ways I like it less. It is less charming and intimate, yet, more formidable and cosmick. In any case, I very much enjoyed your playing, which is deep, and feeling, whilst remaining sufficiently structural. Your attention to phrasing is practically without equal, in this repertoire, all across the lute world at KZfaq.

Thank you for your kind words. I love this lute by Christopher Doddridge. I know it is the wrong choise for this music but it was all I had at that moment. It was my first lute and it still sounds beautiful.

You are so very welcome, Sir. Why do you think this lute the wrong choice?
@TrondBengtson
@TrondBengtson 5 жыл бұрын
@@beasheerhan4482 It has to do with what you mentioned, a six course is more intimate and it also have octave stringing from the fourth course which will give the music another character. But you can of course use any seize of lutes, most important is how you interpret the music.
@beasheerhan4482

Thank you for your answer, Sir. I agree with that, though, i would add, this musick does sound absolutely superb on your ten course, not the least of which this instrument maker did a fantastick job at getting a kind of evanescent glassy, and wintry fragility in the sound. The chanterelle of the lute you use here shines like a diamond in the eye and I positively love it! Moreover, your relationship to this lute is much strong and better than to you 11 course. I think you are more a Renaissance player than Baroque, too.
