Francis Marion- My 3rd grade Idol. Excellent guerrilla fighter from my state. I'd choose him as my General any day.

Thanks for sharing this post on The Swamp Fox, Francis Marion. One of my ancestors William Voyles served under Francis Marion. He was captured by the British during the battle of Camden but escaped. Later on while under Marion he fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain and Cowpens.

It actually was a dynamic duo that held the British at bay in the Southern Colonies. Marion in the Carolinas and Light Horse Harry Lee in Virginia. If I remember correctly they worked in unison on more than one occasion. Very good concise history of the Swamp Fox.

Most people here probably know him by the character Benjamin Martin played by Mel Gibson in The Patriot

Remember Disneys series " The Swamp Fox" that's the only thing I heard about him as a kid.

One of my ancestors Joseph P. Willis who was a FMC fought under The Swamp Fox. Years after The War for American Independence, Joseph Willis led a wagon train out of the Carolinas to Southwest Louisiana. This was around the time of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Joseph Willis became a Baptist preacher, and its claimed he was the first Protestant to preach west of the Mississippi River. There are three churches he founded that still have services on grounds, but in new structures.

He had to keep on the move, because he was out numbered and out gunned. He just lived to fight another day.

You all look to the past with romance at these men like they were moral patriots. In their day they risked everything and were viewed as terrorists. These were great Warriors and men of character.

Many many people, married their cousins in the 1700 and 1800's it was not illegal, they did not know what we do about genetics. Don't judge.

I know the Alice In Chains song “rooster” is based on the drummer of the bands fathers experiences from fighting in Vietnam, but I can’t help but think they also took some inspiration from Marion as well. It’s all In the lyrics if you listen

@S billings What is wrong with his grasp on history? You do realize that Sherman burned Columbia to the ground and did way more economic damage to SC than he did to Georgia right?
@butgod24803 жыл бұрын
I visited Sherman's birthplace in Ohio. I left my mark as any good Southerner would do. I personally know another Southern gentleman who left his mark on his cursed burial site in St. Louis.
