Listened to the podcast too. Did I miss him asking Mirai about coming in 4th at 16 in the 2010 olympics? Of course every athlete must take responsibility for what they say, but there are so many more problematic athletes and actual controversial things that they say that the focus on what Mirai said at the olympics seemed really trivial in comparison. No one who follows figure skating expected any of the US ladies skaters to get anywhere near the top in the individual event, so the podcast opening making it seem like Mirai’s experience at the olympics was some letdown (when in fact she exceeded expectations by becoming the first senior woman to EVER perform 8 clean triple jumps, in the team event) shows how little the gp understands about figure skating and the international field relative to when our ladies skaters were getting medals in the individual event back int the day.

It's unbelievable to start training for 3A at the age of 24. Well done, Mirai.

People had to look at the rules of selection criteria. One nationals does not determine olympic selection. This is because, as any statistician would tell you, one compettition is not as good as a determination as multiple seasons of success (Aka Wagner). Also, people perform differently in national and international competitions. Mirai's season was bad, and one good competition would not make USA olympic competition have the confidence in her scoring ability.

Other countries like japan did this, and japanese fans didnt complain because they are more in tuned with how skaters performed that season. US fans only tune in for nationals, which cause a lot of the undeserved anger towards wagner. Also, comparing wagner vs nagasu and adam rippon vs ross minor, adam's 2016-18 seasons werent nearly as strong as wagners 2012-2014 seasons yet the anger towards adam was smaller than the anger towards ashley.

I think that Mirai has more or less implied in other interviews that she understood the criteria for Ashley going, but that she questioned the criteria in relation to Polina going, who had zero senior experience. I’m guessing the judges inflated Polina’s PCs at nationals bc she had made the jgp final that year. However, even though Mirai wasn’t consistent, she had also managed to pull out one Grand Prix medal per season since the olympics, so she did have somewhat of an argument. At least Mirai skated in the nationals gala despite her disappointment, unlike some people....

She did great if she didn't got a medal in 2010 well. She did what she support to do. Love her a lot.
