Reformed mobster and son of notorious Chicago Outfit enforcer and hitman Frank Calabrese Jr. sits down with former undercover agents Giovanni Rocco and Dutch McAlpin to share his story of family, violence, addiction and life inside the Chicago Outfit. In this candid conversation Calabrese Jr. shares the intimate details surrounding his decision to leave the world his father pressured him into and how he risked his life to escape.
Frank Calabrese Jr. is a former member of the Chicago Outfit and co-author of the best-selling book Operation Family Secrets: How a Mobster’s Son and the FBI Brought Down Chicago’s Murderous Crime Family. He was a key government witness whose testimony in the Operation Family Secrets trial devastated the Chicago Outfit and sent his father Frank Calabrese Sr. to prison for life. No longer living in fear of his father, see Calabrese Jr. at one of his weekly speaking engagements at The Mob Museum in Downtown, Las Vegas, Nevada in 2024. For more information on his regular Wednesday-Sunday appearances, visit themobmuseum.org/events-posts...

Take it from somebody that was around the situation. Senior was not writing down in his journal that He was going to kill his son. This is his way of justifying turning on his father, like he’s always tried to do. Another lie is that when Senior confronted Junior, it wasn’t about drugs. it was that and about that he stole his dads money. The real situation was you had a real gangster trying to keep his junkie son from embarrassing the family. And that money he stole was for noble causes like he said, opening business’s or whatever/ . He blew it up his nose

I’ve definitely heard this on many occasions from different sources. From what I understand, Frank Jr. is a terribly unreliable narrator and you have to take a lot of details with a grain of salt. Certainly not saying his father was any kind of Saint, but the details he fills in are often very iffy. He was a cokehead for MANY years, and in that time he did a LOT of messed up stuff.

Think about it. There’s no true honor in that life. His dad was waiting for the perfect opportunity to rub him out so he played him to try and get him close and being in that life you know it’s the beginning of the end, kind of like how people think Gravano ratted to save his own ass. Gotti was the one on those tapes throwing Gravano under the bus. What would you do if it were you? It’s like a bunch of grown men in a clubhouse and 1 is willing to throw you under the bus to save his own neck but in actuality Frank Sr was the true scumbag. The Outfit was true LCN. They had a certain cadence and if you looked around you never knew they existed. It was quietly kept that the only thing anyone knew was the history of Al Capone. I fell into the mob genre after the 5th season of Sopranos. All I’ve ever watched was guys like Franzese and Gravano up to this point and it sounds like those guys were too loud with their illegal activities which brought down every family. Back in Chicago things were so quietly kept that it wasn’t until the Family Secrets trial that blew the lid off! In Chicago you’d walk around the neighborhoods Frank and all of the mob guys frequented but still never actually saw anything or knew anything and that’s what separated the Outfit from the 5 families in New York. These Outfit was also a lot more structured and there didn’t seem to be a lot of them going at it like out in New York. There was definitely a whole different dynamic when it came to Chicago.
@marcbasil
@marcbasil Ай бұрын
That isn’t necessarily true. Giancana is arguably the most world famous LCN gangster ever, he was a global celebrity, everyone knows who he is. Also, Family Secrets was huge international news. And Accardo constantly gets mentioned as the GOAT (even though he wasn’t; that honour goes to Ricca)
@marcbasil
@marcbasil Ай бұрын
But you’re right in the fact that the Chicago family was much more akin to true LCN. Why is that? Because they’re essentially an outpost of the Westside/Genovese family. Capone was a made guy into that family. Genovese are the same way, like ghosts. They move in darkness & it’s taboo to be seen in photographs. The two families are essentially one in many ways.

Yes, Ricca was the Boss Of All Bosses, and he & Mooney ran the most powerful (and oldest/most storied) territory in the borgata (Taylor Street)….but Mooney was way, way more respected on the street & internationally than Aiuppa-Cerone-Accardo, and they knew that he could rally the troops if he really wanted to, and prevent Aiuppa from wielding power. They actually tried to make peace with Mooney, several times throughout the early 70s, but he didn’t have any respect for them. I’ve been told that the primary catalyst was when Willie Messino got caught up in 1973. Cerone wanted to use a judge that belonged to Mooney to fix his case, and Mooney denied them.
