On 22 January 1990, ITN reported on the Labour Party's decision to set up
an inquiry into its Birkenhead constituency party, where the sitting MP Frank Field had been deselected in Decemeber 1989. Field claimed his local party had been infiltrated by supporters of Militant, a Trotskyist faction within the Labour Party, who had hijacked the electoral college to replace Field with union leader Paul Davies.
Frank Field has died aged 81. The former Labour MP and minister and later crossbench peer represented the constituency of Birkenhead for 40 years, during which time he focused his efforts on issues of child poverty and wider welfare reform. A prominent Eurosceptic, Field resigned the Labour whip in 2018 due to concerns about antisemitism in the party under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn. He spent much of his career outside of the Labour mainstream, and from 2020 acted as a crossbench peer in the House of Lords. The family of Lord Field of Birkenhead released a statement via his parliamentary office in which they paid tribute to Field as "an extraordinary individual who spent his life fighting poverty, injustice and environmental destruction," praising his "unique contribution to British politics."
