GAMBALE TUNING EXPLAINED
“Firstly, it’s called “GAMBALE TUNING” :o).
The open strings are the same pitch as a 5th fret capo with strings 1 & 2 an octave lower.
6 - A ( same as regular 5th string but it now the lowest string (6th).
5 - D ( same as regular 4th string but it now the 5th string.
4 - G ( same as regular 3rd string but it now the 4th string.
3 - C ( same as regular 2nd string but it now the 3rd string tuned up a half step.
2 - E ( same pitch as 2nd fret on a D string in standard tuning. It’s a wound D string from a lighter gauge set tuned up a whole step D to E )
1 - A ( same pitch as 2nd fret on a G string in standard tuning. It’s a wound G string from a lighter gauge set tuned up a whole step G to A )
There’s transcriptions on my website available for songs from the album Raison D’Etre recorded in 2004 where I first introduced this GAMBALE TUNING invention.
The song I played on Rick Beato’s interview was called “Table For One” from Raison D’Etre.
The Gambale Tuning allows you to be able to be comfortable and play with it right away without thinking because it’s essentially a modified standard tuning, but because two pitches are an octave lower, it open up endless new voicings that were previously only possible on keyboard. It’s VERY liberating!.
Suggested strings;
Use strings from two different gauge sets, for example, Light and Extra Light gauge sets as follows;
6th - A string from Light gauge set
5th - D string from Light gauge set
4th - G string from Light gauge set
3rd - B string from Light gauge set tuned up a half step
2nd - D string from Extra Light gauge set tuned up a whole step
1st - G string from Extra Light gauge set tuned up a whole step
Enjoy,
FG

Guys, so the tuning is: 6th string = A ( usually the 5th string ) 5th string = D ( usually the 4th string ) 4th string = G ( usually the 3rd string ) 3rd string = C ( usually the 2nd string but up a half step ) 2nd string = E ( same pitch as 2nd fret on a D string on a regularly tuned guitar ) 1st string = A ( same pitch as 2nd fret on a G string on a regularly tuned guitar ) Thanks Frank!! Amazing tuning!

@@MisterA1002 Yes. You need two string sets to do it though. Essentially, you don't use the low E and high E of the first set. You switch the remaining strings up and tune them as if you had a capo on the 5th fret in a regular strung guitar. Then, you take the D and G strings from another set and put them where the B and high E would be and tune then one step up.

I first saw Frank Gambale over 25 years ago with Chick Corea. I thought he was a restless innovator at the time. Glad to see that he hasn't changed, at least as far as being an innovator....... Innovation being the essence of change, or maybe it's the other way around.

I wrote this poem during listening to your tune frank. Beautiful tune :) Table for one. He sat alone at his table, Mesmerised and unable, The candle lite room, Filled the vacuum, His heart skipped a beat as his eyes met her, He held her hand, Words not uttered or exchanged, They danced to the flutter of light, Illuminated by the orchestra, Lost in each other's gaze, Her heart lost in an emotional maze, Slipped from his pocket a ring, Knelt on one leg and showed her the bling, Rosy cheeks, their audience held their breath, Anticipation held she wept, She shook her head not in discord, With excitement, yes! Yes! she roared, As they resumed the floor, Seized a perfect moment as their waiter entered the room door, Though thirty years went by so fast, When their eyes met across a room love held it's grasp, Who can say when or why, Together forever until either die, Though he is not long gone, Fond memories feel forlorn, Scented flowers fill the air, An aroma so fair, Table for one, The emptiness is never fun, Tears fall like a roaring ocean, Our hearts are lost in emotion. - 2014©Eamonn Ryan

+rubendiazguitar I agree, Maestro! :) It reminds me of the amazing stuff you played on a left-handed guitar. I'm tempted to try this with nylon strings, but I'd be too worried about freaking out the guitar neck. I could almost see buying a guitar just for this tuning, and then I'd be back to steel strings for the first time in years. :)

Hi Frank, you may not need to learn new fingerings with this ingenious tuning, but it does turn the guitar into a transposing instrument, so there is that. If you are looking at, say, A on a lead sheet you've got to play an E, so there are some mental gymnastics involved. (Dont get me wrong. Big fan here. You're a MONSTER!)

So this is basically Nashville tuning down a perfect 5th... Very nice. I was using a tuning ripped off from Pat Metheney's recent acoustic albums dropping the 6, 5, 2 and 1 strings down a whole step, then replacing the 4 and 3 with gauges to tune them up an octave, so you still get a "bass section, with the middle strings up and octave...not sure that all made sense. So the tuning would be standard down a whole step, middle strings up an octave.

+Doug Dunbar - I'm not clear about the 4th & 3rd strings... I understand you put lighter strings, but is it tuned an octave above concert pitch or are they also transposed down a full tone then up an octave. IOW are they D & G or C & F? Thanks (if you get to read this).

FrankGambaleTV If the lowest 4 strings are A, D, G, C..... that's a 4th above regular tuning, not a 5th. A 5th above would leave the lowest string tuned to B. Just wanted to make that clear... I'm sure it was just an oversight or slip of the tongue by Frank Gambale. Great tuning idea which I will definitely give a try. Nashville tuning is nice as a 2nd guitar to sparkle things up (a little like a manual chorus...). Whereas the Gambale tuning can be used as the 1st guitar, or even the only guitar. I'm anxious to try this out with a female vocalist I've been playing with. Close voicings here we come! :0)

I think I understand this - except for the last 2 strings - 6th would be the A string 5th would be the D string 4th would be the G string 3rd would be the B string tuned to C? 2nd - Is this what would be the big E string tuned to E? 1st - What happens here? A? So does this tuning take 2 "A" strings? Since the low E is the last one left - it can't be tuned a 5th up.

How does one go about choosing gauges for the strings? I did this with a Strat copy, carefully picking gauges that I thought were appropriate for the note I intended to tune it to, and the intonation is awful at the first few frets (yes I have adjusted intonation at the bridge).

I have a question Frank. Why tune to A? Doesn't that pull the tension on the neck? Even with the high E & B strings an octave lower it seems like its about to pull everything up. Would tuning to G be slightly less tense?
