That's all good but, that finger should be a million miles away when comes to acting chops, Russell Crowe rarely uses them little gestures that bring attention to oneself. Rawest of skills is what he brings time after time. He should be a two-time winner. Denzel's role in Training Day was so over the top, it should be a lesson on how not to act. No comparison.

The great thing about his work in this movie is that he decided to play in a low key. Never nervous, never the thug you would expect. Never threatening the cop. His real nature is when throws the cup of coffee on the wall. That’s where Denzel is great. He shows with little details who Franck Lucas was. The opposite being De Niro in the untouchables always displaying physical violence. It’s so clever from Denzel to act that way. I admire that.

The interesting thing about the two characters in the movie is that Frank is morally sound in his family life and a dirt bag in his professional life. Richie is the exact opposite in that he is morally sound in his profession while being a dirt bag in his family life. It's an interesting theme of the movie that i'm pretty sure wasn't coincidental

Its an excellent bit of acting from Denzel. You can see the wind go out of his sails as soon as he realises he is facing a truely rightous man. He knew eventually the party would come to an end and if he was brought down because of greed or curruption or racism, all those justifications he's told himself over the years for why he was still a good person, despite everything he'd done become true. But when he's face with a man who can't be bribed or threatened, who understands how broken the system is and still refuses to compromise... it's not the system he's fighting anymore, its justice.

@@contraband1543 I think he looks relieved at the end not desperate. Frank knows his occupation (ganglord) ends with either a bullet or a 30+ year prison term. As soon as he figures out Crowe's priority is to sweep up dirty cops and not put Frank away forever he knows he will be free in a (relatively) short time. In the movie it was 5 years, which is hell of a lot shorter than the 70 year sentence he was staring down.

You know why Denzel is such a good actor? Because he knows how to think like the character he's playing. And that's a rare gift, because anyone can imitate someone, but it takes a real genius to become them.

It's so easy to forget just how good an actor Denzel Washington is... his delivery butter smooth and his manner free and easy. I'm only a couple of years older then Denzel but he's been a presence during my whole life. A master of his craft, an erudite, witty, charming and charismatic figure that's earned every accolade ever given. God Bless you, Sir and thank you for all the memorable moments!

2:29 "I got the Mazzano crime family (willing to testify against you)". WHAT ? No Mafia member in good standing would ever - EVER - help cops take down a rival criminal. Let alone testify in court. They wouldn't even GO to court, unless they're supporting another Mafia guy, who is on trial. Ten mob guys attending a court room trial ? And being willing to testify ? Imagine how self incriminating that would be. "Yeah, I hate that Lucas guy, he was dealing heroin ! My crime family only deals in gambling, loan sharking, hijacking and murder!"
@jimreily7538
@jimreily7538 Жыл бұрын
If you're a made guy, if you're connected, if you're an associate. Even if you're the lowest level street thug, and you say, "Hey, let's testify against one of our enemies - let's help the cops bring a heroin dealer down", you'll be killed. You'll be marked as a rat. You're dead. The concept of a Mafia crime family helping the cops take down a rival, is incredibly ridiculous. Come on. I know people love this movie, but that's as unrealistic as it gets. Whoever wrote the script for this film, knows nothing about how mob guys operate. A Mafia member will only testify if he's indicted, or facing charges, and wants to save his own skin.

The Italian mafia did not like black criminals. They were deeply racist and snitching wouldn't be looked down upon if it was against a black guy. This movie is about Frank Lucas and the events are true regardless of if it lines up on your beliefs on Italian mafia

I've never seen Denzel in a bad guy role. He's so likeable, even as a bad guy. Soon as he breaks out that smile ... like the sun comes through. Two great actors in a face off. Denzel pulls it off effortlessly. Very unpredictable. The hallmark of a great actor. Russell plays an incorruptible man, a rare breed. In the end, his character soars miles above the gangster's. Great film.
