The greatest brawl in Nationals history. It all started with a foreign substance in Brendan Donnelly's glove.

Robinson once had a fight with Eddie Mathews of the Milwaukee Braves, who took exception to the way that Robinson slid into 3rd base. Mathews was an ex amateur boxer, and he beat the crap out of Robinson. Robinson sustained a bruised eye, a bloody lip, and he jammed his index finger trying to punch Matthews. When Robinson got back to the dugout, he told his teammates that he won the fight. When they all looked at him incredulously, Robinson told them "I was safe, wasn't I ???"

Guillen and Donnelly had a multi-year feud going after Guillen got suspended in 2004 when he was on the Angels and Donnelly supported it publicly. So Guillen had a habit of trying to upstage Donnelly every year after. Robinson admitted later that is was Guillen who told him what to look for. Later they got into it again when Donnelly was on the BoSox and Guillen was on the Mariners. Donnelly was really kind of "we have a well documented disagreement...so what". No one doubts that Donnelly's many years in the minors is where he learned a lot about how to get advantages the umps couldn't detect. But even Phil Niekro got the benefit of the doubt with a full inning of pitching before the balls were inspected. When someone is tossed before he even throws a ball in warmups is a bit hasty (in baseball terms).

I live in Canada and I remember the CBC feed of this game. During the argument over the first search of gloves, Frank Robinson was in kind of a repose and Mike Scioscia kind of hovered over his shoulder and spoke in Frank's ear. Frank took it all in, paused for a few seconds unmoved, turned his head in almost disbelief and unloaded on Scioscia. I only imagined that Robinson said "You know what, You may be Mike Scoscia, but I am Frank Fucking Robinson"

This was June-14-2005 . This is what ESPN reported on its website regarding this game, after the game: After Brendan Donnelly was thrown out of the game, the Washington Nationals rallied to win it. Donnelly was ejected after Nationals manager Frank Robinson asked umpires to inspect his glove and found a foreign substance. Then a fired-up Jose Guillen hit a tying two-run homer and the Nationals scored four eighth-inning runs Tuesday night to rally for a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Donnelly was tossed in the seventh without so much as throwing a pitch, ejected because he had a foreign substance -- pine tar, he said later -- on the heel of his glove. Angels manager Mike Scioscia then began jawing at Robinson, and both benches emptied, although there apparently were no punches thrown. Guillen, suspended late last season by the Angels for throwing a temper tantrum and traded last November, was particularly angered during the incident and had to be restrained by his Washington teammates. Scot Shields replaced Donnelly and retired the two batters he faced in the seventh, but Guillen homered the next inning to tie it at 3. The Nationals scored two more runs off Shields in the inning, and added another run in the ninth. "I feel like that situation really got the guys going, got the adrenaline flowing, and they just became closer and more determined," Robinson said. "They were determined that the Angels were not going to beat us tonight." Dale Scott, the umpires' crew chief, said Donnelly's confiscated glove will be sent to the commissioner's office. The use of pine tar is against rules barring "foreign substances" on a pitcher's glove or person. Scott was uncertain what suspension, if any, would be levied against Donnelly. Scioscia acknowledged that the use of pine tar is against the rules, but said it is "used around baseball," doesn't alter the flight of the ball and usually isn't an issue. Both he and Robinson were still fuming after the game. "I lost a lot of respect for Mike tonight -- as a person and as a manager. And there's nothing he can say to me now, nothing," Robinson said. "I don't even want him to approach me, I don't even want him to apologize to me. I would not accept it or have anything to do with it." Robinson, a former vice president of discipline for the major leagues, said Donnelly simply got caught cheating and Scioscia was "way off base." "He took me by surprise when he came over to me and I took it as a threat," Robinson said. "He told me that he was going to have every one of my pitchers undressed when they came out there to the mound -- no matter who it was." Said Scioscia: "I told Frank we were going to undress his pitchers when they were on the mound to see if they had any pine tar in their glove. He obviously wasn't happy. He was screaming. We weren't making a lunch date." When the Nationals took the field for the bottom of the seventh, Scioscia asked the umpires to check pitcher Gary Majewski's glove, which they did -- and made him fix the loose laces on it. Told that Robinson also claimed Donnelly had sandpaper with him before he got rid of it, Scioscia's voice rose as he said, "He had no sandpaper out there. That's absolutely ridiculous." Donnelly, asked about the sandpaper, shot back, "That's just a lie."

Look how furious Jose Guillen is..do you want to know why? Guillen and Scoscia apparently hated each other, many Angels and many other teams thought Guillen was a cancer. The Angels suspended him without pay during a payoff chase for throwing his helmet toward Scoscia when he was pulled from a game after being beaned...google "Forget the playoffs Guillen banned without pay." Scoscia would break Guillen's 150 pound body if they were allowed to roll.

In this amount of time in todays game, they wouldn't have had enough players left to finish the game with the way they throw players out of the game today. The umpires were much more lenient.

As good as it was no, both when Papelbon chocked our Bryce Harper and when Strickland hot Bryce Harper at the plate and Bryce went after Strickland and benches cleared. That fight ended Michael Morse career when he got sucker punched.

Wow surprised to see no one hear mentions the beef between José Guillén and the Angels/Mike Scoscia at the time. Jose just came from the Angels (suspended/let go) and very bitter. His ex teammates say he ratted out his former pitcher "I don't got truly no respect for [Scioscia] anymore because I'm still hurt from what happened last year . . . Mike Scioscia, to me, is like a piece of garbage . . . He can go to hell . . I can never get over about what happened last year. It's something I'm never going to forget. Any time I play that team, Mike Scioscia's managing, it's always going to be personal to me.["
