The problem with marner is the cap implications , let's say montreal traded for him , how can you sell signing him to 3-4 million more then the top paid players currently on the team? It completely ruins the cap structure of the team , like how the Tavares contract ruined the cap structure of Toronto.

Even if marner had 10 points in every playoff series, the leafs would still have to trade him off since they can't afford to pay him what he will want in 2025.

It’s a win-win for the Leafs. Anyone they get back is worth it, if he walks then they get the cap space to sign free agents. 😊

the only real question is 'is Marner worth 11 plus million or could you get better production/value with that 11 plus million spent elsewhere'...

Marner needs to go to a young tram and help it make the playoffs, not to another playoff team and disappear when they need him the most.

You can't trade him for fair value. And no one's going to trade him and extend him for 8 years at $12M/each. So...your options are: trade for him cheap (and miss out on him for some or all of the next regular season), or don't trade him at all (keep him for the entire regular season). I say keep him for the season, and then let him walk...see if he can get $12M+ on the open market. If he does, good for him. The Leafs will get $12M of cap space AND keep him for all of the regular season.

Cheap means what Ottawa got last year for DeBrincat. A late first round pick + a roster player + a prospect. Toronto will have to retain or have to add in a bad contract with term. They may go with the bad contract just so the value looks more appealing.

The problem with the Marner trade is the teams that can afford to resign him for what he wants are the team that he doesn't want to go to or are not willing to invest the assets. He's has not been a team friendly player so far and that's part of Toronto problem. At most I can only see them getting rental prices a first and a A-B+ prospect. I think they are going to have to trade other assets to fill the hole. Getting back to the Cap issue teams can sign 2 player for what he wants and I believe he only wants a 3 year contract as well.

Unless it's a sign and trade they are gonna have to get what they can because I honestly don't see Marner being able to handle playing for Berube. Thing is, I don't see anybody giving out a big trade package plus $11M for Marner(I don't see Marner even getting $10M) and we all know Marner wants every dollar plus some so he might just wait to hit the market and try to get his $11M+. The Leafs might just have to get what they can because they 99% will not be resigning him so🤷‍♂

Negative.... The best chance for the leafs is if they can trade Marner near the trade deadline and it won't be for much. Too big of a risk for a team to take on that contract, not be able to resign him and then loose him for nothing. Maybe a 2nd and a 4th at the trade deadline, and the leafs retaining the max salary

@kenna7686 Out of curiosity, Do you think it's a bad deal for Vancouver? Or for toronto? They both underwhelmed in the playoffs and both make about the same. The length of the contract is the difference. A fresh start may do each other good

@GR-bn3xj ATM the length of the contract is an issue. It's not a knock on EP. He's a great talent. Plus he's a C. But Mitch is a local boy. So if all is equal let's say, the tie breaker is won by Marner with that, for me.

Leafs can’t score in the playoffs and the “solution” is to trade your leading playoff scorer and two way (former selke finalist) offense-man. No, it makes zero sense and it makes even less sense to trade him on the “cheap”. If there is a high upside talented young forward or defender then it may make some sense but at the least he will at least cost significant draft capital to acquire. “Cheap” trade is nonsense. Sorry, what did Pierre Luc Dubois get traded for again? He had one year left on his deal too. You think Marner is worth less? Marner is a playmaker. When shooters don’t score is that Marner’s fault? He cannot score if players don’t put it in the net. Not scoring was a team issue not a Marner issue. It was also a coaching issue. The coach simply did not have an answer when teams shut down the Leafs. The salary cap management questions are on management not the player. It takes two parties to sign a player contract. If you don’t like the cap situation who decided to put the team together. Not the players.

You lose on a Marner trade if you only look at the trade return in and of itself. Only the most inept GM would give valuable assets for a player they can sign next year as a free agent. (Also his agent should be fired if he doesn't already know what Marner can get signing as a free agent. Not that any team would "tamper" that would be like abusing the LTI rules.) The win is the salary savings and the player(s) signed with the savings. Where this is problematic is that if Marner shines elsewhere and his replacements don't, all senior management will be out.
