“Ella Fitzgerald is the only performer with whom I’ve ever worked who made me nervous. Because I try to work up to what she does. You know, try to pull myself up to that height, because I believe she is the greatest popular singer in the world, barring none-male or female.” -Frank Sinatra

I'm aware you're talking about vocal abilities here, but Sinatra was not only a singer, and you may need to know about history to know what he truly was. He was a privileged white male artist in a world where women and any other races were seen as inferior. That being said, he was outspoken about being anti-racist, and was an early activist during the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout his career, he insisted on having integrated backing orchestras and his band would always provide equal pay and treatment for all musicians, regardless of race. He refused to stay at hotels or play at clubs that did not admit people of colour. He performed with almost every black idol of jazz, blues and swing, including Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., and Count Basie. He was also vocal about his appreciation for the influence of musical icons such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald (as seen on this video). Sinatra was a big-time supporter of Martin Luther King Jr., providing support to the Civil Rights Movement by headlining fundraisers whenever possible. During the 1960s, Frank Sinatra was recruited by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to join the Civil rights marches in the South. Sinatra would go on to receive a lifetime achievement award from the NAACP.

So true!!! I just log into 'YT' and pick up onto talent from years ago...REAL TALENT!! Most of today's :talent" is well meaning CRAP...but it's not the fault of the performer...it's just the way things in the music industry has "PROGRESSED". I read many comments by young people who wished they'd been around when there was so much "popular" music [of all kinds] being produced...during the 1950s and 60s by EXCITING performers...

I was born in 2000, these guys were gone long before me. Yet I love this music as a black man from France. I dont know how I discovered this music, but Im glad I did. Its getting me through a tough time. I hate the music my peers listen to, music in today is vulgar, loud and savage with hypersexualised hyperviolent messaging. I cant help but think our society as youth is a reflection of the music we consume in my generation. I dont know why I wrote this but a part of me wishes music like this would come back and bring the good times again.

I am not of that generation (Gen Xer, here) and I have musical preferences across all genres. This era of music is unequivocally my absolute favorite. While there are current artists that are certainly talented, I do not think there is one vocalist still living that can hold a candle to the standard set by this generation. I mean, seriously. Who still records with a full orchestra? The man may have had some questionable lifestyle choices, but vocally, he was absolutely amazing. Timing...phrasing...tone...presence...he had it all.

I wanted to catch both Frank and Ella before they died, so I saw a show where they both sang together at The Greek Theater. Ella had to sing from a wheelchair. When they did "Mack the Knife," Ella managed to hit a high note that sent everyone to their feet. I'll never forget it. But here's the kicker. I wondered why she only sang from the chair, only to learn later that they had cut both of her legs off because of her diabetes. Talk about a consummate professional, she was "it."
