The fact that Sinatra, a man who had criticized rock bands his whole life put his crooning voice on this song is monumental
@MsThebeMoon

He put his crooning voice on "Something" by Harrison, too. That generation criticized RnR. My parents generation born in the 1920's. Though my mom was a closet Beatle fan until she came out in the 1970's. She bought Meet The Beatles album 2x.

In every version of 'Yesterday' I've ever heard (including Sinatra's) the singer sings the opening word incorrectly, dropping a tone from the first syllable ('Yes-') to the second syllable ('-ter') of 'yesterday'. McCartney sings all three sylables of the opening word on the same note ('F' in the original Beatles song), and for a very good reason. It isn't until the second verse that he drops from G to F for the word 'suddenly', and then in the third verse (following the middle eight) dropping from A to F for 'yesterday'. Finally, after the repeated middle 8, he drops from G to F again for the word 'yesterday' in the final verse. These are very precise, distinctive musical enunciations which help to carry the emotional tone of the song; it's astonishing that, to my knowledge, not a single vocalist who has covered the song (Sinatra, Eva Cassidy, Ray Charles, Michael Bolton, Matt Monro, etc, etc) appears to have spotted these subtleties of delivery in the original version. I think it also demonstrates the degree to which Paul McCartney is probably still a very underrated singer.
@normanklein3155
@normanklein3155 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. I was immediately conscious of something not being right (and Sinatra is generally so good about enunciating things correctly), but couldn't put my finger on what the problem was. And just listened to Eva Cassidy's version and it has the same issue (as you correctly stated).

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away Now they look as though they're here to stay, Oh I believe in yesterday, oh I believe in yesterday. Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be. There's a shadow hanging over me, oh yesterday came suddenly. Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say. I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday. Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play, Now I need a place to hide away, oh I believe in yesterday. Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say. I said something wrong , now I long for yesterday. Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play, Now I need a place to hide away, oh I believe in yesterday.

When your childhood is filled with sadness and deprivation, your teenage years one of longing and poverty, and early adulthood filled with doubt, failure and more poverty, losing out on the few experiences of love I have had, you really do start to understand this song...Wanting to live in a past that was better than the horrors of the present, wanting to go back to when things were filled with a sliver of happiness and joy rather then sadness and emptiness. Kimberly....I do not know why you left but I adored you, and without even a phone call or a text you just casted me aside like I was nothing. I do not know what I did to lose your affection, if I ever had to begin with, but I deserve better then that.

A nice version. At least Frank acknowleged the Beatles as the great song writers they were. Elvis saw them and their music as a huge threat to him and did everything he could to destroy them in the public eye.Even through his buddy tricky dick President Nixon. Elvis & Sinatra were GREAT performers but the Beatles not only performed and actually played but also wrote the classics. Beatles hands down !!

Sinatra saw Elvis as a threat and hated Elvis in the 50s. Frank even cover one of Elvis songs which was Love me tender. Elvis liked The Beatles but he definitely was worried that The Beatles were massively taking over his fame. However the beatles were huge elvis fans and elvis was their idol.
