It's a joy to watch someone who appreciates the humor in Zappa's music 👍

Toad-O Line is a prime example of Zappa's use of xenochrony where he pastes a guitar solo from another song onto a different accompanying track... In this case, a live guitar solo track from Inca Roads was pasted over a samba jam in the studio...

Zappa was a huge inspiration to Howard Stern and appeared on his show many times, up until Zappa's death from cancer.

We knew when listening to this (and Franks other albums) in -79, that it was ahead of its time, but we enjoyed it immensely, still do! Zappa Lives!

My urologist is a big Zappa fan, first time I met him we talked about Zappa, it was 'no shave November' which is a prostate cancer awareness thing, talked about the fact that Frank had died from prostate cancer the same month as Don Amiche and Bill Bixby, and the many references Zappa made to STDs in his music. It was one of the more interesting Dr. appointments I've had. Keep up the good work, nice reaction.

Zappa is documenting a phenomenon of the late 70''s. To get people in the clubs in the middle of the week when they couldn't draw customers, clubs would have Wet T-Shirt nights. Zappa's take on it is perfection, as someone who ended up at a few. Also, Toad -O- Line is a knock at Toto's 'Love isn't always on time".. where they say, "Tow the Line.. love isn't always on time"

Been following most of your Zappa reactions. Not a patreon but always giving thumbs up. Glad you were prodded to do side long Zappa. Been hoping for that since you've been doing Zappa. Some albums have thematic content that are related. Story goes (that I read, anyway) is that Frank collected a number of songs and he decided to piece them together in a storyline connected by the Central Scrutinizer. Over the years I've grown tired of hearing all that whispering Central Scrutinizer nonsense but the songs are, as you would say, "fire". You are excited about the solos. Interestingly enough on this collection, some of the solos are actually taken from live shows that he recorded that are completely unrelated. What impresses me the most about a tune like Joe's Garage is the extreme care and precision of his layering. It's so dense but it all works. Good perspective. Thanks.

I love this album. And I love your dive into FZ and your reactions. It might be a good time to explore his earlier (and maybe better) works. I really recommend the Flo and Eddie years albums including: "Just Another Band From LA," "Chunga's Revenge," "Filmore East, 1971," and "200 Motels." This is one era that runs roughly from 1969 to 1972. It's very, very good. And hilarious. After that, I recommend that you check out his early Mother's of Invention albums. IMO there are three great albums from that time, 1967 -1969. They are "We're Only In It for the Money," "Absolutely Free," and "Uncle Meat." They're all very different. "We're Only In It for the Money" is a master piece. And "Uncle Meat" is brilliant. But I think the most fun and the easiest to get into in "Absolutely Free." I love that album!

The guitar solos was take from live tours, just the guitar ...

All the guitar solo's on the album (with the exception of Crew Slut and Watermelon) use the technique called Xenochrony (something Zappa came up with in the 60's) where the backing music is all studio based but the guitar solo (just the guitar only and not the backing) were all recorded live in the early 79 tour. So in other words everything here is studio based apart from the guitar in the solo sections. The production on this album is just amazing.

Lucille is the name that BB King gave to everyone of his guitars. BB King is one of the names on the Freak Out list from Frank's first album Freak Out. It's a list of people that influenced Frank up to the point in his life when he released his first album.

Zappa was/is the grand emperor of musical free association. Howard Stern basically stole Frank's personality and ran it through his own filter. Howard was funny 30 years ago, Now he's a pathetic woke whiner...
