I’m a lifelong Zappa fan, but I wouldn’t go that far… Gilmour and Zappa were both masters at the guitar and masters at bringing emotion out of their instruments

I believe Frank played this on his yellow Strat, not the hot-Rod SG that Dweezil sometimes uses.

I believe Frank said that this was his favorite piece out of everything he wrote, it took his son Dweezil a couple of years before he could play this live, there is a video of him on KZfaq playing it on stage for the first time, in tears throughout the song. Many choose this song to be played at their funeral/celebration of life, myself included. A truly beautiful piece of music.

Zappa's most feeling piece. You really must listen to all three Joe's Garage albums in order to get full context. By the time Joe plays his last imaginary guitar solo he's had his heart broken, gotten the clap, destroyed an XQJ-37 Pan-Sexual Roto-Plooker, been to prison, and by the time he gets out music has been made illegal. The pure emotion of this song is absolutely Frank at his finest. My favorite Frank piece for its simple purity. Blessings.

Even if you hadn't said a word, that grin was enough. lol One of my favorites by Frank. Finally managed to grow his watermelon. I concur with Ronald, Zoot Allures and Black Napkins, both off the album Zoot Allures is a must listen.

There has always been something about this song that utterly floors me everytime I hear it. Even for Frank there was something 'extra' in this one.

I'd say there's no shortage of reactions out there to Zappa, but, yes, the fans are very loyal and know the music very well. He's described as a musician's musician because he doesn't necessarily get the mainstream, but people who know music gravitate to him. Always doing what we can to keep the music alive.

Underappreciated, misunderstood, underestimated, but never underrated. Just about every professional guitarist, jazz, rock, you name it, recognizes that Frank was a virtuoso. His phrasing, tone, color....he really was a master. Whenever you hear Zappa on guitar, you immediately know it's him, and no one else. It's like B.B. King, or Hendrix, Clapton, etc. And to think he was entirely self taught as a composer and as a guitarist. Zappa ranks up there with Mozart, Stravinsky, Cage, Glass.

Love your reaction, again! I could be wrong, but I believe this is the only guitar solo on Joe’s Garage that is played ‘live’ in the studio with the band, and I read somewhere that it was the only take. He had it all figured out!

Truly one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Humor is an essential essence to understand in Frank and his music. Sometimes very adolescent/rude/crude but oftentimes quite dry and incisive. He has a concert/interview video called Does Humor Belong In Music.

What a lovely piece of music this is. One of the three signature pieces as Zappa said himself. The other two are Zoo Allures and Black Napkins. Check these out. Btw, the title comes from Zappa saying that playing a guitar solo with this band is as hard as growing a watermelon in easter hay.

@@Matty88K I was referencing to this: Frank's son Dweezil talked with his father shortly before Frank's death about the songs Frank had written that he would consider to be his "signature" tunes. These were "Zoot Allures", "Black Napkins" and "Watermelon in Easter Hay". (From Wikipedia)

@@MrOrontea Didn't know that. I had read that before he died, Frank told his wife, Gail, to get out of the music business amd sell his catalog in its entirety, except for Watermelon in Easter Hay. The rights to that piece were not to be sold. So it must have had special significance to the composer.

A truly beautiful piece by Frank.....the choice of notes is special and the use of space as well as tone is perfect, playing a controlled repertoire is just as hard as a more frenetic number..... this is a masterpiece. Another great heartfelt reaction Rory thanks!

@@Roryreacts Good music and comedy are formed from tragedy. Some people with wit are able to channel that tragic energy. You're right about the rhythm and timing, in comedy, it's all about the delivery and in music, it's all about phrasing.
