America invented disco, house and techno in the 70's and 80's, then in the 90's the club scene in the UK and Europe was huge. Drum and bass, Trance, UK Garage, Funky House, Breaks, Hard House.... the list goes on. All was invented in the clubs in UK/Europe in the 90's. Pre-EDM. Love the channel!
@drwhatson2 жыл бұрын
Discotheque means record library in French. They developed in the early '60s. and clubs thrived in the UK - particularly for Soul music, mostly because it was the best music to dance to and the US had access to live Soul acts that we didn't. By the time 1970s "second-wave" US Disco music emerged via Philly and Miami c.1974, Discos were already well established in Europe. The 1980s and 1990s added little to the format except 'Disco' went mainstream after 1977/78.
@Rossboe12 жыл бұрын
@@drwhatson The 90's added little to the format? Ask people in the UK Garage scene, or the Drum and Bass scene or the trance scene in clubs if there whole new form of dance music added little to the dance scene . The low cost of amazing new samplers and synths allowed people to experiment and literally invent new forms of music. These new scenes thrived and made disco and house look very antiquated.
@drwhatson2 жыл бұрын
@@Rossboe1 Well, you would say that wouldn't you? LOL You're probably too young to have attended the massive Jazz-Funk Alldayers of the '70s. I mean that the format of a club playing records, was essentially the same, rather than a live gig, as was more popular in the rock world. Most people in the 60s and 70s were Top of The Pops "divs" who rarely ventured to underground clubs that played specialised music, from "Northern/Rare Soul" to Funk/Rare Groove etc. Incidentally, many of my friends were and are DJs and venue promoters. Neil Rushton was quite influential on the House scene and still runs venues. Colin Curtis and Ian Levine did their thing at Blackpool Mecca (Levine still later with Hi-Energy). I can go right back to Carl Dene in 1970... I'm still in touch with them all. :-P
@Rossboe12 жыл бұрын
@@drwhatson Well thanks for the name drops. I think going to clubs and dancing to new exciting music is what its all about, and being young. So people going to clubs and getting excited about clubbing and listening to some new style in 2022 is no less exciting than back in the 70's when you were young or when I went to my first rave in 96. The experience of going to listen to djs play a style of music that has never been heard before is whats exciting. Live music is great too, but being on a hot and sweaty dance floor at 4am when the djs 'avin it, and everyone is getting into it is more exciting than an outdoor festival, and Ive been to plenty. P.s Being your age you must be aware of the egos attachment to music and how you can get caught up in trying to be cool, with tastes, record collections, what gigs you've been to, who you have seen, I know this band or that dj. Its all ego bullshit, the ego trying to be better than someone else, its just using music to enhance itself, instead of money or status, ect. Good day.
@drwhatson2 жыл бұрын
@@Rossboe1 Isn't that what I said? Nothing much changes except variations in the music. It's the almost illicit underground nature of the scene that makes it exciting, as opposed to what's presented by the mainstream.

Nile Rogers and his mate were invited to a nightclub by Grace Jones to view her style etc with a view to producing her stuff. At the door, they weren't allowed in by the officious bouncer so went home and started jamming about their predicament. They got a groove going and just had the two words 'F O!'. Deciding it was a good song they had to change the words for radio play purposes and it became 'Freak Out'!

Granted, it may not be what you're used to there in the US, since HipHop and R&B are mostly the clubs, people in their late teens and twenties usually refer to.. But in the UK and Greece (where I'm from) clubs are the main source of nightlife for 18+.. You would love this scene.. Would definitely recommend you guys try it out ;)
