Franklin, NC - The Gem capital of the World - is a town in Macon County, North Carolina ( Nantahala National Forest). The county seat of Macon County has a population a little over 4,000 based on the 2018 projections.
Before settlers arrived in the Franklin area - the area was part of the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee people called the area now known as Franklin "Nikwasi" which means " Center of Activity". The popular Nikwasi mound is still visible in downtown Franklin which marks the location of Nikwasi's townhouse.
Franklin is named for Jesse Franklin, who was one of the two state commissioners who surveyed and organized the town in 1820 as the County Seat. The city was not formally incorporated until 1855. Later Jesse Franklin served as a North Carolina Senator and was North Carolina's 20th governor.
As mentioned previously , Franklin is called "The Gem Capital of the World". Franklin is famous for it's gem mining and the city host the famous gem jewelry and gem show " Macon County Gemboree" twice a year.
