AND... he didn't cook turkey. Their Thanksgiving was popcorn, jellybeans, pretzel sticks and buttered toast. It's the whole point of the cartoon! Peppermint Patty complains about the meal and learns that the food itself doesn't matter. It's everyone coming together... and everyone includes Franklin.

The thing that made Newspaper!Franklin so important was the fact that he was normal. He was just there. Maybe not as a main character, but no one in the comic ever treated him differently, and at that time, that was the type of cultural image people needed.

and there were outcries of ''tokenism'' when he was introduced. because 'Peanuts' was such an institutionalized icon, sexism, racism and sexual identity all had to be addressed at one point or another. Marcy and Peppermint Patty are the token lesbians. they were introduced in the 1970's when Women's Lib was big.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Rogers did something similar about swimming pool racial integration once. I always thought Franklin was adorable and everything he did different made him quirky and unique, I never considered skin color had anything to do with him being set apart from the other characters, though the Thanksgiving picture is now questionable.

you see it's more showing that other also don't agree with racism and doing something they can. Franklin made peanuts cool. Snoopy knew it and the only reason he sat on 1 side of the Thanksgiving table was because that's the cool side.( everyone else was all hunched together on the right!)

Lowell Lucas Jr. Hi, that's a good way to think about it.. didn't think of it that way. I personally think that the illustrator might have drawn him one day, then drew everything else around that picture on another day.. to give him extra attention.. haha.. whether or not it was intentional.

@Katie Coonley So, if the Franklin character was FIRST introduced in the most recent PEANUTS movie/show/comic strip rather than back in 1968, folks with progressive views would see this addition as irrelevant? I still don't see how the comment(s) make sense. There is still much racial, social, and economic issues that bleed into the entertainment industry. These eissues resonate throughout time until they are resollved. As of yet, they are not resolved, which is why these issues are still major touchy talking points.

Apparently that was because the actor did Hapkido, so it's a punn, Hip - Hapkido, but yeah its a bad look. Making the black power ranger black and the yellow ranger asian is a bit worse though, this just ads insult to injury.

i guess its more "unfortunately unintentional." But the actor that played Zack did say the writers were specifically looking for a black actor that can integrate hip hop skils into martial arts. they were specifically looking for someone that could dance.

It took me a while of growing up before I understood where that bemused air he had came from. All the other kids were being their strange selves and he'd be just "uh huh". That detachment was delicately portrayed. Schulz did a good job with him.

I did always confuse me as a kid when I saw Franklin sit alone in the Thanksgiving special. Then later I forgot about the thanksgiving special all together, because my teacher wouldn't let me watch the whole thing. The rest of the class got to watch it, but not me!
