Frazetta Paint Study Stream with Dave and Erick

Frank Frazetta is revered as one of the greatest artists of all time. He combines incredible draftmanship, figure construction, emotion, dynamics, composition, and color into some of the most visually arresting imagery ever created. And he's probably the most influential fantasy artist who ever lived. Lately I've been painting studies of his work just for myself, but I wanted to bring that to you all so we can work through it together. We'll be painting with acrylic on arches hot pressed paper.

Came in late for the live gladly watching the replay. It’s so refreshing and reassuring to see greats still learning. I’m 44 and I’m 5yrs. in, learning how to draw/paint, and though I’ve definitely seen improvement in my abilities. It weighs down on me some times. But watching you guys STILL learning? Gives me the strength to persevere. It doesn’t hurt that I absolutely love doing it🥰 Thank you Eric and David🤗💕

No Spring chicken here either.... I'm 63. I work about 28 hours a week. Shotokan a couple times a week and still try to eak out enough energy for studying Blender, C#(Unity) and at least do some sketching warmups.

Frazettas color choices, especially on skin tones, are what blow my mind. He’ll use green, blue, yellow, etc and it looks incredible. He’s really pretty avant-guard in that sense.

Some artists/painters you can never HOPE to copy, you can only emulate. Frazetta is such an artist. His technique, composition, use of color, light and shadow are simply astonishing.

That Action Comics cover was Neal Adams, but the interesting part is that it was inked by Murphy Anderson, a very unusual combo.

Fallout is really great, love it as well, try new vegas, its superb. David, i dont know if the bump on the bended leg of your character is the vastus lateralis bumb, or the fascia lattae bump. Which one is it?

... DAVE .. Please .. do NOT Forget .. the .. IDEA .. is to give Klaus Janson .. YOUR ..Pencils of Daredevil .. then he takes it home & Inks it Later .. on MND ..( Man , I'd LOVE to see his Inks Over Your Pencils ) The Worst thing that could happen is he says no .. BUT .. No .. " Biggy " .. then you have a Daredevil that is .. " Ready to go" .. for MND later .. ( I doubt it .. BUT .. If he gets upset .. . Please Blame .. Dave, curious, but what is it youre working with that youre able to both make hard strong black lines with, and then also at the same time soft shadows? Is it just a normal pencil, its hard to make out🙂

It is a Dark Umber Prismacolor Colored pencil

The Alex Ross study should be helpful, using less lines and more shapes and planes and tonal value should be really interesting. Im interested to know if Alex uses an acrylic under painting before artist gouche. I have a hunch he does

You Know, Frank Frazetta did that illustration in Oil Paint. You guys are using watercolor. Why don't you try the same thing that he used? Also, he used to screw around and play ball with his kids, watch television, etc. and then when the due date for the finished painting was just a couple of days off, he would go to the studio, make a couple of gallons of coffee and then knock out the painting with only a couple of hours to spare in many cases. A few times, he did an assignment in one night! If you could show us that, it would be a very challenging and interesting video, indeed! Not that you aren't good, but he used quick and deliberate brushwork to meet his deadlines! That's what I'd like to see. Is that a challenge?

I have copied your process and having some success I feel. Except I use Bristol Board instead of Arches paper. Watercolor paper is too rough for the detailed work with Prismacolor pencils IMO.

Use Arches Hot Press for a smoother texture
