Le Mecano Du Dimanche You miss low budget 4x4 builds ? For comedy? 4x4's that will any off roading far from roads and people should not be cheap. Lifting your truck with steel springs for big tires on a truck built for powering and stopping the weight under 4x4 needed ? Buy some good boots too.

@@brianbirc Youre a joke if you believe that
@brianbirc
@brianbirc 5 жыл бұрын
@@evansautomotive307 True reading that again now I said it different than what I was thinking and meant. Lifting with steel blocks under your stock factory springs is what I was thinking and meant. That is just adding more weight to move, stop and handle the bumps of bigger wheel/tires by the factory engine/gears, breaks and suspension designed for the smaller lighter tires. Breakage likely if driven hard and or on rough terrain. I have learned off road that is not mild is not cheap.
@evansautomotive307
@evansautomotive307 5 жыл бұрын
@@brianbirc Yeah i am not a fan of lift blocks haha. I have been to some pretty gnarly places in my montero with 35s. But it has a factory rear locker and that helps a lot.
@brianbirc
@brianbirc 5 жыл бұрын
@@evansautomotive307 Yes lockers are great I have had posi before but the long travel Bronco I built and have now I regeared and locked front and rear. I can go many places in 2wd that definitely would require engaging 4x4 in other trucks I had. I have done a lot to this one and amazed at what it can do. It has been some work to do with a lot of time. Some more expensive parts. Those parts not sold at chain off road stores can make huge differences. The KIng shocks I run amaze me often. I did gusseting and plating adding attachment radius arm to beam. F 250 slip shaft and U joints on the pass side. Rebuilt and improved my transfer case and bought a Monster Trans much stronger and good for 650+ for the cost of a shop rebuilding stock with R&R. Now I changed the engine that was not cheap and more than needed. Balanced and blueprinted 408 with AFR's and more from a stock old 302. Have not many miles on it yet just finished but wow. I have gone further than most need on this one but amazed at what control and smooth ride it has fast over large whoops without breaking.

I appreciated the practical wisdom Fred shared about staying in school and not spending money on 4-wheeling while you're a student. That was refreshing. Also, a reminder for all of us who have expensive hobbies: if your family's needs are being sacrificed for your hobby, perhaps you should re-prioritize. Family first, guys! Good advice, Fred!

Drilling the 2 the ends of a crack is used in aviation. It's called "stop drilling" and prevents further propagation of the crack.

Amazing advice. I especially like the suggestion to stay in school. Other commenters may feel differently about school, but I went to school and graduated from college which allowed me to learn on my own. That means freedom. Until you can learn, research, and figure things out by yourself, you are pretty much stuck. I do admit that the internet, KZfaq, etc. are wonderful resources of information, some of it good, some of it bad. Having gone to school I have the critical thinking to sort which things are fake and which are real. I myself do not have a jeep and I am wondering if the new JL is worth waiting for, or if the JK is good enough. I will not do the Rubicon trail or even Moab, but I will probably want 35 inch tires and will tackle some roads in Utah which require higher clearance. I will probably get a manual two door. I like bare bones. Not even carpet is OK with me. I do kinda like the Cummins engine but if the Jeep I buy is new, I would wait till that engine gives up the ghost. I have been in Moab, Zion, Escalante, etc. (my dad was born in a Colorado) and I love nature. I am OK mechanically speaking, but I may be getting to old to do my own engine swaps, especially if welding new mounts on is involved. So what do you think? JK or JL?

I'm a weld and metal inspector-- if there is a crack in the frame drilling a hole at both ends, grind a V in the crack to open it up, then weld from hole to hole. grind smooth on both sides of the frame then weld a gusset over the crack on both the exterior and interior. just a little advice from a guy who deals with this day in and day out.

THANKFULLY, America still has more beautiful places to see and visit, (for now) than, bad places. A cross country road trip can be amazing. Trying to find routes around all the big cities and congested areas, can be tricky but, is doable. Always take it easy and enjoy the trip. Plan ahead and for delays.

Hey Fred! Love your show, I'm from Quebec Canada, I know your a "Jeep" guy but what do think about the FJ Cruiser? I know it share the same powertrain of the Tacoma, I bought a 2007 6 speed manual with very low millage (46K) and I intend to do 4 wheeling with it. I install a Superwinch Tiger Shark 9.5K with a "U.S. OFF ROAD" bumper for now, what will you suggest next? Thanks

Fred, I've got a 2016 Nissan Frontier that I'm planning to transition into a full time off road rig over the next ~10 years or so. It's my daily driver now, but I'm in a position where I can start making upgrades. What are the best upgrades to make in terms of off-road performance that won't hurt me to bad keeping it as a daily driver (don't want to go to crazy with tire size / suspension and make it undrivable during my morning commute). It's got a 3.6 L V6 on an automatic tranny with 4WD and a limited slip rear diff.

Very true, however if the steering box is applying force to a small(er) area adding the stronger material to spread it out over say two or more times the area can be a strong reliable solution.
