It's not like these artists nowadays aren't trained and don't have any skills (that's what it actually is, 'talent' is a pretty meaningless word), quite the opposite. It's just that they mostly use it to produce garbage because that's what seems to sell the most at the moment.

Fred Astairw was actually a fan of special effects and invented a few. Him dancing with himself as the backline in this video is a good example. He also does a cool floor to ceiling dance with ginger rogers that was a masterful use of mirrors. I get what your saying, and I agree, but remember special effects have their place in proper showmanship.

Actually, each of the back-up dancers are also Fred Astaire. I read this scene was filmed by carefully exposing only one tall narrow strip of the film stock at a time, shielding the others. Moving, exposing strip by strip across the frame. Then rear projection of the composite while Fred performed the foreground dance.

And in Easter Parade, there's this really cool composting thing, where everybody in the background is dancing normal speed, but Fred Astaire is dancing in slow motion up in front.

@Captainzilla418 some of them yes. Special effects does not mean cgi though. Anything done in post through editing is special effects, and this video itself is a good example of old school special effects achieved by splicing together multiple takes into one shot. Its also practical effect since he did every take himself. Also im not entirely sure where using mirrors would land. Practical effects for sure no days, but pretty sure that would have been considered a special effect back then.

Astaire's was the third film version of it. He also recorded the original, racist version, about enjoying mockingly watching the fashionable people of Harlem trying to be high-class, in 1930, but that wasn't the original recording. (It also uses two different offensive terms for African-American women.) Look for the Harry Richman record version (not his slightly later film version) for the first recording (also of the old racist version).
