@@lindaalli2682 But she had a severe case of anorexia nervosa, before it was even a "Named" condition. If you look at her in her costumes in most every movie (ie White Christmas ) She has an Impossible Tiny Waist. She was an amazing acrobat tap dancer who could nerve tap better than any actress in those days, but she couldn't handle the demand on her body bc of the damage she did to her self. She was incredibly talented and we are all so fortunate to have pieces of her dancing preserved for all the discover and see for years to come, but I hope the also learn the lesson of the hell she went thru. It's a shame, really.

Vera was the best all around dancer working in Hollywood. She could and did it all expertly.
@MinstrelSurfer2 жыл бұрын
When I think of Vera I see 'effortlessness' ... she is so natural and all the technique and hours of rehearsal are hidden so we get a seamless performance every time she is on screen. I think she is sometimes underrated and sits in the shadow of other dancers. I agree with you, Gaeill. Thanks for sharing.

For me, Fred Astaire formed the most beautiful pair with Cyd Charisse. According to his biography "Steps in time", Rita Hayworth was his favorite partner he danced with.
@johnnymfan50654 жыл бұрын
That's surprising . Rita and Cyd were great, but Vera-Ellen was really special. Eleanor Powell was close to Vera-Ellen in talent, but I think Vera-Ellen was more versatile than Eleanor.
@carlcushmanhybels81594 жыл бұрын
Yes. I love watching and re-watching the several Rita & Fred Dances on YT. They are utterly phenomenal. Rita spurred on Fred to stretch beyond what he usually would do. Fred & Rita's dances also lend themselves well to being re-edited to go with with fun classic rock-pop songs; combos featured also on YT. I'd never heard of Vera Allen till tonight. I'm enjoying watching her esp with Gene Kelly.

Too bad Hollywood underused such a huge talent as Vera-Ellen. I believe MGM blamed the failure on this film on her, and only gave her one more film, the B non musical movie The Big Leaguer(1953). Also, her agent Henry Willson used Vera-Ellen (and Rhonda Fleming) as a beard for his many gay male stars. Vera-Ellen and Willson's client, Rock Hudson, appeared most famously painted as Oscars at the 1953 Academy Awards. MGM did the same with Lucille Bremer after her movie Yolanda and the Thief(1945)(also with Astaire)flopped. They blamed the failure on her and lost interest in her. Both Vera-Ellen and Lucille's movies have original scores, which may be why they were flops. Vera-Ellen and Lucille Bremer had danced in the chorus of Panama Hattie on Broadway in 1940 , with June Allyson and Betsy Blair.

In musicals there is no such thing as sexual harassment.
@acornhomestead35753 жыл бұрын
Because it wasn't sexual. That's a more modern social construct. It wasn't taken as leachery (not that leachery didn't exist it did, it was hidden)but if you look at relationships and courting/dating before the 50s it's how you got to know someone. Ahhh the good old days lol

Vera-Ellen was forced to wear ballet slippers during this routine because of her height next to Fred Astaire. In fact only Ginger Rogers and Judy Garland could get away with wearing heels next to Astaire. Ann Miller talked about this once in an interview, and how Rogers was the perfect height for Fred Astaire because she was so short, standing at 5 foot 2 inches. Fred Astaire was 5 foot 7 inches, lifts in his shoes brought him up to 5' 8 or 9". Miller often said, that along with herself, Rita Hayworth, Cyd Charisse and even Eleanor Powell were all really too tall to dance with him, and if he did dance with them he would have to wear extra high lifts and a high hat, and they had to wear slippers.

Fred had much enjoyed working with Vera-Ellen in 'Three Little Words'. After the mismatch of 'Let's Dance' with Betty Hutton he wanted to get back with Vera-Ellen, and the film's failure was perhaps his biggest disappointment. His loss of confidence was reflected in the plot of his next effort, 'The Band Wagon', but that would be IMO the finest musical of all. And Vera-Ellen had one more triumph in store: 'White Christmas'.

I agree, up to a point, Tom, but nearly 100,000 people have viewed it and many have commented positively. I posted this video years ago and the copies you refer to were not available to me. Apart from that, I was rather inexperienced then.I appreciate your comment but having uploaded nearly 400 musical clips which have gained millions of views, quite a few of which have since been on other's channels. Not bad for an old guy! Just do it to being the pleasure I have in these wonderful musicals ... a pleasure I love to share. And , by the way, i receive no payment of any sort as all my clips are the work and talent of others.
