Fred Rogers' induction into the TV Critics' Television Hall of Fame is especially touching when Jeff Erlanger, who had visited on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood as a boy in a wheelchair, surprises Fred by making the presentation on stage. Addressing the audience of television celebrities and producers, Fred speaks of his great respect for and understanding of the power of television-"How do we make goodness attractive?"

Years ago, I was on my way home from being in the Army. I had my uniform on and missed my connecting flight to fly home. Mr. Rodgers over heard me talking to the ticket agent and he offered to give me his ticket and he would take the next flight out. Long story short, he spoke to the airlines and someone cancelled and I got home. He was exactly like the person he was on televison, a kindhearted man.

❤❤❤ “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'" True story: "I read a story once about Mr. Rogers that just cemented his total coolness. One day his car was stolen in broad daylight while parked on the street in Pittsburgh. The evening news reported that Mr. Rogers car had been stolen. The next day, it was back in the same spot with a note that said, “Sorry, we didn’t know it was yours.” ❤️ Mister Rogers forever

That’s one of the more badass mr rogers stories. But my favorite is still how he spoke before Congress about needing a machine to record live television so that families could sit down and watch his program at the logical 6-7 o’clock after everyone’s home and parents are there to explain the important issues and answer the questions that their children would have. Because he was discussing important issues. Like the assassination of a president.

How the both of us served on committees at work, and how she poured herself into so many of those whom she worked with. Tears came streaming down this morning just thinking about her. Because of her I'm more of a servant today.

0:25 Look at this. Mr Rogers is kneeling next to the wheelchair, so that Jeffrey is looking down at _him,_ not the other way around. Its such a small act of body language, totally unforced. But it shows the respect that Mr Rogers has for him. He's humbling himself while also elevating Jeffrey to a higher position than him.

I just finished watching the Tom Hanks movie "Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood" where someone says to his wife that Mr Rogers is a saint. The response was that he was no saint; he had a temper, etc. The end message was that it was his choice to react however he did. He was as human as any of us but he put in the work and effort to care about other people enough not to treat them as less than human. His message is missing with the younger generations who think only of themselves.

@@mortimerbrewster3671 St. Nicholas also had a temper, but today is St. Nicholas day so his generosity and love stuck. They both repented of their temper and thus were rightly on their way to being Saints (as that is the whole point, to repent of your sins to Christ and be forgiven).

As a young parent, I was somewhat mystified that my kids were so crazy about MR. ROGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD. Yes, there were flashier shows on television. Cooler ones. But they adored his show. As the parent of adult children, I thank God for this man. My kids learned good lessons from him that supported what I was teaching them. And what their Dad was teaching them. They made good choices and excellent grades. They grew into hardworking, compassionate adults. They became good people. Their father and I are so proud. We need more folks like Fred Rogers to inspire and teach, today. Children need those role models. When the movie "A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood " came out, we invited our adult kids and their dates out to dinner and to see it. No surprise. They loved it. Trolley, singing and all. Every child should have something warm, caring and wholesome to cling to. This is how we'll change the world.

So many in the audience that night likely grew up watching Mister Rogers, and when he spoke to them it must have felt like he was communicating with the children they once were, trying to bridge the gap between that innocence and the cynicism of adulthood. He was never patronizing and he always spoke to our intuition as children, showing us how to understand what we saw and how we felt. I keep replaying the moment when Mister Rogers melted into joy and climbed up onto the stage and knelt down so that Jeff did not have to bend his neck. I just love this man, moreso as I get older as I realize how important he truly is.

In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. "A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. "But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:30‭-‬37 🤝

@@marcstov I'm an Aussie who grew up in the States, and so I grew up with Mr. Rogers... and I consider him one of my heroes. I was explaining his show and the sort of things he did to some fellow Aussies my age(church goers at that), and one of them said "He sounds like a paedophile. I bet it will be found out that he was a paedophile. He sounds creepy." I was livid...

Notice how Mr. Rogers didn't make his acceptance of this award, nor his speech about himself, but actually congratulated the presenter, and was ignoring the applause for himself to talk to the man in the wheelchair, and then celebrated others in his speech. There was a physical education teacher who appeared on Fred's show quite often (she later became a school principal), and she said that Fred was one of the most selfless people she has ever known. She stated that if you gave him a compliment, he would turn the compliment around toward you.

@@bogusmcbogus2637 I think your statement could use some correction. I'm sure that 13 year old boy was acting as himself when he abducted the girl. Goodness doesnt come from a total giving of yourself because people are naturally prone to bad things. We have to regulate ourselves to establish discipline and through that, not that good things are guaranteed, but that you have certainly increased the odds of it happening by doing so. You see what I'm trying to say? I hope you have a blessed day, neighbor.

Fred Rogers was the closest person to a living saint anyone who is alive at moment can say. I'm not a Christian. But I have more faith in the fact that Mr. Rogers was a true, honest, good spirited man who loved helping people. As an adult now, I couldn't care less if my parents or other family members are proud of person I am. I want to be someone that Mr. Rogers would be proud of. Mr Rogers loves me just the way I am. That's what he told us when we were little and that's what I tell my students now. They don't have the luxury living in a world where Fred Rogers is still living and makes appearances on Sesame Street or talk shows. They see cartoon Daniel Tiger. Not the same.
