Mary Austin and Freddie Mercury met in 1969 when she was 19, and he was 24. Their life-long relationship proved to be one of a kind. Mary grew up in a struggling working-class household in West London, raised by two deaf parents. She dropped out of school when she was 15 and started working various jobs to support herself.
Mary Austin pictured in London in January 1970. Mary Austin would go on to become the girlfriend of Freddie Mercury, lead singer with rock group Queen. At the time the two met, Mary was working in a fashion boutique and Freddie had recently graduated from art college. They quickly fell in love and started living together in a cramped flat. What would become one of the greatest bands, Queen was barely in its beginnings.
However, Queen’s popularity flourished in 1970, and so did Freddie’s income. During the first few years of the band, while Freddie was experimenting with outrageous clothes and was theatrically strutting, with Mary by his side, nobody questioned his sexuality. In 1973, he dedicated the song Love of My Life to her. Freddie’s mom, Mrs. Bulsara, recalled: “She was lovely and used to come to us for meals. I used to wish they had got married and had a normal life with children.”
In a 2013 interview for the Daily Mail, Mary evoked her memories of one Christmas Day when she was 23 and Freddie gave her a big box as a gift: “Inside was another box, then another and so it went on. It was like one of his playful games. Eventually, I found a lovely jade ring inside the last small box.” She asked Freddie on which hand should she place it and he replied the left. But they never married. Although they were together for seven years, in 1976, Freddie finally confessed his infidelities to Mary, revealing himself as a bisexual, to which she replied: “No Freddie, I don’t think you are bisexual. I think you are gay.”
The two separated and Mary moved into a nearby flat, purchased for her by Mercury’s music-publishing company. They ended their physical relationship but remained incredibly close, frequently visiting each other. Freddie once said: “All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible. The only friend I’ve got is Mary, and I don’t want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage…We believe in each other. That’s enough for me. I couldn’t fall in love with a man the same way as I have with Mary.”
Mary had two sons with painter Piers Cameron. Freddie was the godfather of the firstborn while the second was born shortly after his death. In 1998 she married businessman Nick Holford but the marriage ended in divorce after five years. Although she made her own path, Mary Austin remained part of the band’s extended circle. During the 1980s, she often toured with Queen, working as a secretary for their publishing business.
When Freddie told Mary the terrible news of being HIV-positive, heartbroken, she devoted herself to his care. Aware of his impending death, Freddie wanted to make sure that Mary would be financially secure. He claimed that he owed her a lot as she stuck by him through thick and thin, and after his death in 1991, in accordance with Freddie’s will, Mary inherited the better part of his wealth - more than $10 million plus his 28-room Georgian palace in Kensington, London. His mother reportedly approved of his decision, stating that Mary was like family to her.
Mark Blake, Mercury’s biographer and author of the book Is This the Real Life?: The Untold Story of Freddie Mercury and Queen, says: “She got the house and a share of the publishing. He effectively left a lot to her as if he was leaving it to his widow. Mary was probably good at keeping him grounded. She had been there before the money, before the fame and she was there at the end.”
The interior of Freddie’s mansion was made by Mary herself. She designed it for him, choosing the Louis XV furniture. To this day, most of the interior design remains just as Freddie liked it. In the following years, Mary launched a foundation to Mercury’s memory, the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charity organization that fights HIV and AIDS worldwide. Aged 67, Austin lives a reclusive life behind the high spiked walls of Mercury’s palace, where fans still make regular pilgrimages.

@Izabella Ursuliak I always feel sad when Freddie looks at Mary holding her baby backstage at webley. Like he thought the baby could have been his. He really loved her. But in the end, I think he was a free spirit. Labels such as gay and bisexual would have annoyed him. He just wanted to "be". But I think he had moments where he regretted how things ended with Mary, for sure.

I have this kind of love with my ex-husband. It is beautiful and I feel very blessed. It is possible if you truly open your hearts to one another, and can understand and forgive the hurt that changing the status of the relationship entails. You have to focus in on the love you share, then it can endure. It's not easy. It's very easy to let the hurt take over. But it's so worth it.

@@MM-ov8on I know. But if you put it in context, in the 1970s you couldn't be gay, if you were it would be the end of your career. However for Freddie it wouldn't just be the end of his career but also the end for Brian, Roger and John. When Queen were invited to attend something it would be 'Oh bring your girlfriend', not your partner. Publicly Mary and Freddie would attend various events together as though they were boyfriend and girlfriend and they could play the part. (On KZfaq there is a video about the after show party for We are The Champions. To Freddie's right is Mary but to his left is David.) The press thought Freddie and Mary we're a genuine couple. There are also some girly magazines of the time period that asked Freddie 'What is your ideal girl like?' I remember reading an article online that was similar to these magazines and it asked Freddie about ' Love of my Life ' . The interviewer asks Freddie 'so is the song about anyone in particular' expecting Freddie to say he wrote for Mary. And then everyone goes 'isn't he sweet'. But what does he reply? 'I wrote it for no one in particular'.

Khem Marie I personally believe they WERE legally married which explains why she got his ashes and fortune! Even if it was "common-law" I believe she would be his legal widow if when they lived together and she used his sir name.. then she's his wife. Freddie was so private and didn't want to expose Mary to any embarrassing public scrutiny that I believe he decided to keep this fact to himself while everybody close to him know otherwise. That's why none had a problem with her getting his ashes in the end and bein' to ONLY person alive that know where they're buried at. Knowing Freddie...I bet he's resting in peace with that darn Delilah (his beloved and favorite cat). She stayed with him right through the end. According to Jim Hutton, Delilah stayed curled up by Freddie's side and he petted her as much as he could. He said he and Peter were taking turns in staying with Freddie and when Jim checked on him last, Freddie had past with his hand still petting her 😭!

Mary had a difficult life after Freddie's death. Contrary to what many believed, that she lived a glamorous life after all the money that was left with her. Jim hated her because the Garden Lodge was inherited by her, Freddie's family were furious that she got Freddie's ash and put it in a disclosed place (Freddie's wish), Freddie's friends were not happy that she got so much from him and fans that did not understand her situation. To top it all, she was pregnant when Freddie died and the son of her two sons left her months before Freddie's death. She did not want all of it BUT FREDDIE DID, she left she is his widow. Mary was scared at first to inherit all of it but Freddie told him "If things were different, you would have been my wife anyway." We should remember that Mary is the only person Freddie considered his one true friend and the love of his life. She deserved everything.

@@avangelinecollett3962 He did. We red his book. It was apparent that they did not reconcile. He claims that "Freddie wanted him to live in Garden lodge" and that "Mary changed after Freddie's death". Also, he said "he felt he lost his lover, his house and the cats." Well Freddie left him 500k and a lot to build his house so he wasn't that "homeless". Peter Freestone also said that "Mary did not change" after Freddie's death and she did not "force them out" like what Jim pertained.
@avangelinecollett3962

@@khemmarie1818 He did not hate her, he was frustrated. Hate is a very strong word and shouldn't be thrown around. How would you feel when days after your loved one dies, you get kicked out from a home you shared with them for years. Freddie made Mary promise him that the boys would be allowed to live in Garden Lodge after he passes away and she agreed. Of course no one thought they would be living there forever, Jim, Peter and Joe said themselves they couldn't have lived in that house even if Mary let them, they just wanted live there for a while until they're emotionally ready to move on and that is what Freddie hoped for as well. Just try to put yourself in their shoes, I'm truly not trying to argue with you, just trying to make you understand that what Mary did, truly lacked any compassion. Peter said Mary had security put in so they wouldn't be allowed in the house, Mary actually offered Peter the job to be her personal assistant few days after Freddie's death, but then couple of months later she retracted her offer and told him she's not giving any jobs. What I think really shook me was during the funeral, when John Reid approached Mary to offer his condolences and hug Mary and she just smiled at him and said "Well I won in the end, didn't I".
@khemmarie1818
@khemmarie1818 5 жыл бұрын
@@avangelinecollett3962 How can you say she lacks compassion? They were "allowed" in the house but there was a time schedule. Regarding about that, Peter clarify that after Freddie's death the house was no longer "live-able" because of certain laws and at the time Kashmira challenged the will. He also said that Jim's book was not that accurate. Regarding about the "In the end, I won" statement, we don't know what that implies because unlike Jim, Mary DID NOT create a 'all-tell' book about Freddie and his death in detail. Freestone's book is better and I'm sure Freddie would not want a book about his private life and death being published. She kept quiet all this years, kept his private life private and did not gave any interview about Jim nor bad mouthed Jim. What we do know for a fact is that Freddie left her so much FOR A REASON. Real fans should respects his decision and should not bash her. Jim's fans obviously has his side and believed all the bad things told about her but it's truly one sided. Did you hear her side? Did Jim fans knew what she's been through before and after his death? Freddie lived with fame and fortune, he befriended many people but how come he only trusted one woman? How come he only considered this woman his one true friend? How come he left her with so much? There is a reason. Some people will never understand it but at the end of the day one thing is clear, she was the most important person in his life.

@Izabella Ursuliak"According to the movie" is honestly one of the worst arguments since the movie is not facts. It lacks accuracy. Freddie loved Mary as a friend and she was his favorite person in the world, but even if Freddie was bisexual (which we actually don't know certainly) his homosexual relationships were very important to him, especially Jim. It was just who he was and Mary couldn't fulfill that part of him even if she accepted Freddie.

Love stories come in many forms. It says a lot that he left her a huge portion of his fortune and gave her responsibility over his ashes. You are a wonderful woman, Mary. Most women would have been furious and, although I’m sure it wasn’t easy for you, you continued to love him for who he was. I truly believe you were the Love of His Life. ❤️❤️❤️

❤I have built up this immense bond with Mary and it seems to grow and grow. If I go first I’m going to leave everything to her. Nobody else gets a penny - except my cats.❤ ❤There have been only two individuals who have given back as much love to me as I gave to them: Mary, with whom I had a long affair, and our cat, Jerry. ❤ ❤I might have all the problems in the world, but I have Mary and that gets me through. She only lives about two minutes from me. I still see her every day and I am as fond of her now as I have ever been. I’ll love her until I draw my last breath. We’ll probably grow old together.❤ ❤All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible. Mary is my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage. What is marriage anyway, something that you sign? As far as we were concerned, we were married and we carry on now like we are.❤ ❤I treat Mary as my common-law wife and we’re getting on fine. It’s where the heart is that matters. We’re happy with each other and it doesn’t matter what other people think. We believe in each other and that’s enough for me. We believe in each other, so fuck everybody else. Nobody should tell us what to do. As far as I’m concerned we are married. It’s a God given situation. ❤ ❤We were closer than anybody else, though we stopped living together after about seven years. Our love affair ended in tears, but a deep bond grew out of it, and that’s something nobody can take away from us. It’s unreachable. ❤People always ask me about sexuality and all those things, right from the early days, but I couldn’t fall in love with a man the same way as I have with Mary.❤ - *Freddie Mercury [His life in his own words]*

One of my biggest regrets is not staying friends with my first bf. I fell out of love with him but still loved him as my best friend if that makes sense. I missed him like crazy for years and I'm sure he felt the same way. It was just too hard at the time to stay in touch. It takes incredible strength to do what Mary did

@@lilathecat6931 or Freddy himself. The movie is not factual it is a dramatization of Queen and Freddy himself. People refuse to hear what he himself says over and over. It is a lot more fun for the haters on both side to pick a villain. And it is just as revolting to hear the putrid homophobes and the Gays that dont like the fact that he says she was his love and he considered her his wife.

If you love someone enough you know when to let them go. She loved Freddie enough to let him go and be himself. It irritates me hearing some people go on about how the film was to much about his relationship with Mary. He said it himself. It was straight from his own mouth she was everything to him. Yes he was gay but she was the love of his life. Just because he was gay he was to exclusive to gay people. Respect Freddie and enjoy that incredible talent. That was what he wanted.
@dx.feelgood5825
@dx.feelgood5825 5 жыл бұрын
Not to mention, the movie focuses on his struggle to accept himself. He denies being gay, claiming to be bisexual, and soon falls into a dangerous, cocaine-addicted lifestyle. It's only until he finally has sense knocked into him, does he stop that and finally accept himself. It's rather frustrating when it's so obvious

The bond that Mary and Freddie had is something beyond what is called love. Nowadays, people have the wrong idea of what loving a person is truly about. Love doesn't necessarily mean a physical attraction between two persons, but the ability to help each other grow no matter what. They were two lucky people to have found each other and be able to enjoy the beauty of love. The way Mary and Freddie express themselves about each other is unique and beautiful.
