I saw his father in concert when he mentioned Freddie’s birth. ‘I have a son! You’re the first people I’m telling this to.’ We applauded and he started talking about the responsibility of now being a dad. It was cute and sweet but months later, when the news was reported of his death, I couldn’t help but think about his son, but it’s so good to see the man he’s become. Hats off to his mother. She did a great job.

That’s sad for Freddie to lose his father at only 10 months old. His mother was only 27 at the time of her husbands death. Props to Freddie Prinze Jr’s mother for choosing to raise him by herself. Good to hear that he still had a relationship with his father’s family in Puerto Rico.

Come to find out with the dna test my dads father is Irish. So I’m 1\4 Irish. Wish I knew cause that was a figure that was a mystery and I always wanted to n ow who my grandfather was. I respect Freddie’s view about his Dad. His Dad was a hero to our Mexican community he represented the Latino community just as Jennifer Lopez portrayed Selena. His Dad was my first TV crush in the 70’s. It was wonderful to see a Latino on prime time. Prior to his death he signed a $6 millón dollar deal over five years for Chico and the man. Also he was a great stand up comedian. I enjoyed seeing him also on lots of talk shows

I have mad respect for Freddie Prinze Jr. being a devoted hands on father and husband with a stable grounded lifestyle, his father would be so proud of him. I can't imagine though only knowing your father as a forever 22yr-old young man and being twice his age and not being able to imagine your father as old. His poor father never got to fully grow up, the brain isn't fully developed into a mature adult brain til age 25, he really was still a boy living as a man. I thought his father died at age 32 and was recently STUNNED to learn he was only 22, my God that is young. I'm 35 an even I think of 22yrolds as babies and won't date them no matter how street smart and mature they are, they are barely men who don't yet know who they are and what they want in life (I'm already starting to be motherly to them and try to set them up with nice girls their own age and give them unwanted life advice)

My family loved having a Puerto Rican in a starring role in a hit show! We LOVED HIM! We were so proud of him. "Chico" to us, was a nickname, not an insult.

@DrRoo913 жыл бұрын
My dad told me about the some of the hate from some of the Mexican audiences of Chico and the Man. He remembers it being a small minority of people complaining but I can see why Freddie Prinze Sr. felt bad from those comments. My father loved Freddie Prinze Sr. and didn't care that he was half Puerto Rican. The fact that there was a Latino who had a lead role in a great sitcom was big deal back in the day and even today. I sat down and watch some episodes with my dad I felt the same way. Freddie Sr. was a comedic genius and it's so tragic that his career ended so soon. He'll always be remembered as one of the funniest comedians that ever lived.

Yeah I was talking to some older Latinos in Chicago and they really liked the show in Chicago. 🤷🏾♀️
@DrRoo913 жыл бұрын
@@Lemondoor I heard of the same situation with the 1997 Selena Movie. There were some Mexican audiences that did complain that Jennifer Lopez was Puerto Rican and not Mexican. For me and my family, we thought she did great. I haven't ran into any Latino that saw the movie and complained about the casting. I think what it is, is that there's a small audience that has an opinion and they tend to have the loudest voice compared to the majority.
@Lemondoor3 жыл бұрын
@@DrRoo91 Same with some Latinos in Chicago. Especially Gen X Latinos. When Selena came out, we in Gen X were supportive of it because it was about SELENA who was Generation X as well. Jennifer was one of the “Fly Girls” on In Living Color so to us, it didn’t quite register that it was a PR playing Selena. But maybe for some, it could had been an issue. 🤷🏾♀️

Richard Pryor had his own issues. He should have congratulated Freddie for his accomplishments. I remember watching that show as a kid and thinking how handsome Freddie was. Such a gorgeous man. I hate his life ended that way. That was the 70s and it was a different world back then but the drugs no doubt clouded his mind and his judgment. He was self medicating with the drugs just like so many with depression do. It's such a shame noone had him committed to a hospital for help at least to let him clear his head. RIP beautiful man. Btw over 44,000 people commit suicide each year in the US.

I love how honest he is about his father. I read The Freddie Prinze Story written by his mom and you could tell that there was a struggle to talk about his shortcomings. She often wrote them off as cute little quirks when he would display some troubling behaviors (e.g., getting mad then going out to shoot his gun in the woods). He was extremely talented, well-liked, and is sorely missed but he was human. He had flaws like everyone else.

It was the 70’s. I think they’re both overlooking this important detail. It was a crazy time. Drugs were pervasive. They were almost normalized. It was the age of Studio 54. He was only 22 as well, had a smoking hot wife, a 3 month old baby girl, he had a great job in the oil field, and he had a nice house, his wife had a brand new car, and he had a brand new truck. One day he went to a spot his dad and brothers used to fish at, sent out texts to his mom and brothers saying "i love you and im sorry", and shot himself in the head. He never threatened to do it or none of that, he just did one day. Crazy.
