Triumph Bonneville Service Day | A £45 Motorcycle Lift | New Tools

2 жыл бұрын

I headed off to my local motorcycle mechanic to pick up some parts to service the Triumph Bonneville in preparation for Tenerife.
And I received a couple of new tools from XL Moto which I was very excited to try out; a 104 pc socket set, and a £45 motorcycle lift! I was unsure and curious as to how well such a well priced motorbike lift would actually work.
It's been a long time since I serviced the bike, so it was well overdue! The difference an oil change, chain adjustment and spark plug change has made is huge.
Monika agreed to come along with the promise of coffee.
And my starting issue returned!
I hope you enjoy it!:)

Tip for bump starting: 2nd gear, stand on the pegs when you start rolling, and slam yourself down on the seat as you let the clutch out to make the back wheel grip.

Absolutely correct. 2nd gear, drop your ass on the seat as you drop the clutch. How do I know? I’m almost seventy and back in the day we didn’t have starter motors we had kick start levers and most of the bikes, whether British or American, didn’t always cooperate, especially after sitting overnight.

Chap, what a ride......for us that is; the camera absolutely loves you, friend. And who couldn't love Monica? Lucky man, you you have yourself a fine young lady there and my envy. How you have not ended up on mainstream TV is a complete mystery but social media's gain. Between you both, Noraly and The Missenden Flyer, I may as well throw out my TV sets! Thoroughly entertaining but real life events, I don't remember ever paying the slightest interest in how small anyones' front door is or,got excited about a motorbike ramp or watching someone eat ice cream and telling me about his boots. But I have now.....! And I'm sure I'm not alone is being excited to hear of your adventures and antics in the sun; for which I am again totally envious. Take good care of yourselves, Senior Dobbs, look after your beautiful lady and don't be a stranger, eh mate?. Keep smilin' bloke.....

Your starting technique reminded me of many years ago, my ‘69 El Camino. I bought it off of a friend and the starter needed to be grounded out electrically to get it to engage. I kept a brass rod just for that purpose. A new starter eventually was the fix and I passed that car on to my brother.

Nice tries on bump-start Freddie. Reminds me of a failed start on my Francis-Barnett 225 cc Cruiser (in 1968). Ran with it down the road (correct gear 2nd, clutch in) then jumped side-saddle on but forgot to get off when it wouldn't start - result broken foot pegs and riding home when it did start with feet in the air! Embarrassing or what. Good luck to you and Monika on your Tenerife switch. Look forward to the new vlogs.

Yeah Freddie it’s called a ‘bump’ start because you need to jump on the rear seat as you let the clutch out. Hence the ‘bump’. Practice makes perfect like the old endurance racers used to do. Well done for giving the service a go for yourself. Sooooo expensive when you go to a dealer.

@PhilipBallGarry
@PhilipBallGarry 2 жыл бұрын
Another brilliant video Freddie 👍. Regarding the starting issue, I believe the bikes ECU monitors the battery voltage to prevent starting the bike with low volts (which can damage the sprag clutch and associated components). But it's a little bit too sensitive and will sometimes intervene when unnecessary. As the ECU connection goes via the ignition switch, your mechanic could be right if the contacts have gone a little resistive over time?

Haha yes, we live (lived) on the horse roundabout- in the development of flats right next to it. Apparently the area has a very old gypsy history- there are still lots of gypsys in the area, although they're getting more and more squeezed out now as the area gets developed, so you'll see horses tied up on the edges of warehouses, and any available grassy area

Another great video Freddy, though l have to say £53 for 4lt of oil is a total rip off!!! Even if it was fully synthetic, l personably would of gone for iridium plugs you can fit and forget them. The company selling that bike stand should give you your money back for comprehensively demonstrating their product, which if you don’t have a centre stand would be a godsend, l have an Aprilia Mille you can only use paddock stands which are very precarious to use l have in fact dropped it once trying to use them. The starting problem on your Bonnie looks to be just the starter solenoid, an easy and cheap fix to replace it with a new one. Love your videos which are getting more and more professional, especially like that you keep the little mishaps in too, we’re all human Freddy.

I think you were mugged for the oil. Checkout car parts places. Hint from a plumber to a bonneville owner. Keep an old hand soap dispenser once you've used the soap (i mean those ones that you press down the top to dispense the soap). Give it a thorough clean and remove all the old soap. When you've got a small puddle in the plug recess and the engine is cold, remove the plunger part from the soap dispenser and stick the tube that normally draws up the soap into the water and plunge the top so it draws up the water and spray it away from the engine block. A water sprayer does the same and you can buy them all over the show. Nice stand. Looks like a more compact and much cheaper take on an Abba stand. What was that you did to start the bike when the switch didn't work? About time they put kick starts back on them.

@@FreddieDobbs in that case your starter solenoid is faulty. I had that on a Benelli because the hopeless original part isn't waterproof. I changed mine for a Yamaha one and all was fine . Did you use first gear when attempting to push start? Looks like you pressed down on the shifter. You should try second gear.

Freddie, still not going to repair the starter solenoid?
@FreddieDobbs

Interestingly, it’s been diagnosed as a faulty ignition barrel (the solenoid is new on it). I hoped it was the solenoid!

That's what I thought, so I changed it... but after a LOT of research, the mechanic diagnosed a temperamental ignition barrel! (I'd never have guessed that!)

Edit: okay as you can see I commented before the end of the video rookie mistake on my part my bad...BUT☝️ that chain looked way way too loose and extremely dry 😁🥃
