The Norton Commando arrives!
I take collection of this British made, 961cc and 77hp bike, and have a first ride and walk around.

Sorry, quality hand made should not have quirks. We were taught to make it right or don't make it. Even screw head slots had to align. A lock that is not centred is not a quirk it is bad workmanship. To be honest I find the bike less than impressive and certainly not up to the original's standard. A good way to start and argument would be to ask which bike ruled the road in the fifties and sixties, it wasn't the Norton Commando.

On a bike that expensive, those "quirks" are really unacceptable. I love the look, it has a great engine sound, but it's absurd to still be such poor quality. Indeed, it hearkens back to the glory days of British bikes, with their oil leaks, their lack of dependability, and their eventual bankruptcy because the Japanese bikes were so much more dependable. I want to love the Norton, but I'm afraid I cannot. I will stick with my Moto Guzzi V7, which has every bit as much character (if not more), nearly as much bhp, rides wonderfully, gets lots of looks and comments, and doesn't give me an ounce of trouble -- and cost £7,000 less.

They didn't have Norton Commando's in the 30's 40's and 50's and they certainly didn't win any GP's.

Old and compromised just for the sake of making it old and compromised doesn't really sit well with me. You can pay homage to the past without going there. Sure, it has that allure, but... I wouldn't want one. And that's the kicker.

I'm sat here in a Norton sweatshirt I bought years ago. My dad had one back in the 60's (the bike not the sweatshirt!) and I always lusted after one. However, having seen the changes of ownership, the fanfares and the ultimate crash of disappointment every single time Iam relieved that I only splashed out on a sweatshirt. During the Garner years I was in a position to buy one. But it was very definitely a bike to look at and listen to, but not to ride. Best decision I ever made was not to buy one. The quirks you describe are just evidence of poor workmanship. I wouldn't expect it on my Honda scooter runaround and certainly not on 17k worth of "hand crafted" bike. I can hand craft all sorts of things but they'll all be crap. I foresee a lot of rich wannabe biker dudes with underground parking at their investment bank jobs walking very painfully to the elevators until they realise they've been duped by the hype and it'll stay parked there purely for display purposes until Binty, Mungo or Henry need some wedge for uni and then it'll be sold, for a disappointingly low amount 😂

I had a 1973 Commando. It was the most wonderful horrible motorcycle I ever owned and I've had over 100 bikes. It was like having a lover who constantly cheated on you and you didn't care. I'm now 70 and cannot ride anymore due to being on blood thinner medication but if that were not the case I'd be all over this bike.

I’m sorry Freddie, a nice bike but you looked very uncomfortable riding it

British made, Indian owned. Am I the only one who sees the irony here?

It's safe to say that the love affair between Indians and bikes runs deep. Whenever we invest in a company with a rich heritage, we not only cherish it but also strive to preserve its legacy with utmost care and dedication. 🏍💙

There is a 1973, 750 Commando sitting in my Dads garage. He rode it at least once a week until about a month before he passed at the age of 92. My brother-in-law rides it now and smirks when he sends me pictures. He's 71.

You showed the Norton in its natural environment. Round the block for a coffee and a pose.

Another great video. One comment - (I grew up in London during the 50’s and 60’s and started riding bikes long before I was legally allowed to 🤫) - I never met anyone during that time who rode a Norton because of the comfort factor. They “suffered” riding a Norton because it was a Norton. 😁🇦🇺👍

I was blessed to own and enjoy 5 Nortons. An ES2 single made in 1955, an Atlas model from 1965, 3 Commandos -1970, ‘73 and a very short term stent with a ‘75 electric start. Overall, a wonderful experience that cemented my loyalty and fondness for this iconic marque. Memories are hinted on each ride on my substantially modified Royal Enfield Interceptor.

I knew you would be grinning ear to ear with this one, Freddie. The exhaust note is superb. Real character.

That is quite likely the best sounding bike engine i've ever heard. The pegs are rearset because it's a cafe' racer. That also explains the seating position. It's a retro performance bike, that's all it's 'sposed to do. This one isn't for 2 up riding, or touring. It's for riding to work on nice days and going for a ride to the cafe' on warm, sunny Sunday mornings.

Are they quirks - or are they faults? They are faults.
