Also, hand it to tom green for inventing the podcast, live streaming comedy, web talk shows, I mean if you look at what he did between the mid 90's and early 2000's, he basically laid the framework for almost everything we all enjoy today. He will be revered in time.

"It has the bones of a cliche story" I feel like that's the main thing that makes it great for me. It feels keenly aware of what a normal Hollywood comedy is SUPPOSED to be, but it takes all those story beats you'd normally expect and turns them into something completely un-endearing. It feels like the ultimate send-up of, like, Adam Sandler movies. And there's some Adam Sandler movies I like, don't get me wrong, but with most of them, if you really examine the main character at face value, you SHOULDN'T root for him. Like, generally an Adam Sandler character is a pretty dumb, self-centered, crude guy who's actually kinda a dick to everyone, but you root for him because the movie tells you to, by making him feel like an underdog, surrounding him with asshole characters who you want to see him take down a peg, showing you that "he really has a heart of gold", etc. I feel like Freddy Got Fingered takes that formula and rips it to shreds by showing what one of those movies would be like if the character just had absolutely none of those usual redeeming qualities.

Thanks for validating a concept that i’ve believed in for years: that an audience’s and the artist’s interpretation of a work are equally valid! Sometimes i want to dive into a piece of art and pull out the intent of the artist, cause i think theres some profound aspects in there, and sometimes i just wanna sit with my own interpretation of something because i find it subjectively more valuable to me. There is no wrong way to interpret art. You can be wrong about what the artists intent was ofc, but how you feel about a movie is always valid.

Really happy to see you like this one. Me and a few friends watched it at uni a few years ago after hearing it was awful, it split the room in that half of us thought it was hilarious and genuinely a bit ahead of it's time and argued it would be received differently had it been released closer to present day. The other half thought it was an idiot with a camera. I think both are valid arguments, which is what makes it such a great film.

I was introduced to Tom Green's work and this movie by RedLetterMedia and I've been obsessed since! One of the most embarassing things to admit is that I actually related to the father-son dynamic. If you take away some of the genuinely insane shit, it's a story about a father with high expectations for his son to succeed in a traditional way but the son instead grows up to be a self-destructive burnout because was never encouraged to become an artist. The toxicity surrounding perception of success and masculinity becomes a huge theme of the story - imagine a comedy this sill having themes! I love how this movie found a way to touch this somewhat darker personal subject while making me tear up laughing. I love that it ends up with Gordy making his father PROUD by doing what he always desired to do. I love how his father accidentally becomes instrumental for his success. There is something wholesome to be found under all the layers of insanity here in the end. To me Tom Green is an underrated genius and you are right he might be way too ahead of his time. Also, I recently found Tom Green's channel and the videos showing how he lives now are so wholesome. I actually get a similar vibe from those as I do from watching you and Trent doing your thing. Bless you

I never noticed it when I watched in highschool but my absolute favorite line in the whole movie is when Tom and his dad are causing a scene in a restaurant, and a waiter runs up and yells "This is a FANCY restaurant!!" It's something a real person would never say, but it just fits so well into everything that's happening because of course it's a fancy restaurant that he's destroying.

this movie came out when i was about 12, and by that time i was already hopelessly obsessed with Tom Green. i had a big poster of him in my room that was just a close-up of his face wearing little plastic devil horns on his head and some small text below that said "my bum is on fire" lol my mom actually let me take a day off of school so i could see this movie in theaters. more than that being automatic "extremely cool mom" status in my mind, she was just one of the only adults in my life that wasn't weirdly judgmental about my interests at the time. now as an adult myself, i still feel comfortable approaching unusual stuff with wonder and curiosity instead of hostility. that has added a lot of enrichment to my life. thank you for the reminder of a treasured memory with my mom, Joel! : ]

Shit, now that you brought up those two things together, I almost feel like the character of Gordie in Freddy Got Fingered could be a fictionalized version of someone like Wiseau or Breen. Hey Joel, I remember your letterbox review of this and was mildly surprised that you liked this movie. I appreciate that you thought this movie was intentionally horrible for the sake of proving terrible ideas from execs don't deserve simple passes. Tom Green when he isn't doing his antics in the 90's was a pretty thoughtful individual. Look at his "The Tom Green Show" online you see someone who wanted to breakdown conversations about comedy and his beliefs about being successful in Hollywood. I think people genuinely thought he was incredibly deranged and antagonistic. Looking back I would say it was 50/50. I think the genuine critique of Hollywood and his self awareness started with this film as he approached comedy now. Plus just hearing him talk about comedy, life, personal struggles is insightful.

A major point your a missing is that Tom is a creative genius, and the movie is about being a creative person. Non-creative people make it seem like artistic pursuits are worthless and that we should be doing something "useful", but artists are more capable than anyone, and there really isn't anything worth doing anyways. If you can draw a cartoon you can probably grow a carrot or build a wall, but there are people fighting wars and dying for their nations while we celebrate great works of art and the artists that create them, because we know that they are just better people.
