When Portrait of a Lady first came out, the sales assistant at Barneys sprayed some on my arm. It was not yet officially released and wouldn't be for a couple more weeks. I became obsessed with smelling it again and bought a bottle immediately when it became available. This reaction is the only instance where I became so obsessed with a fragrance. Interestingly, I don't wear it very often.

Hi from Spain, nice to see Dalia again, I like always her collaboration, she’s very funny!!! I like POAL but I’m not confortable wearing this. I think all the fragances are unisex but to me this go a little bit femenine . I prefer wear The Night, is similar but to me is more masculine than POAL. Thanks both. Stay safe!! Smelled it today. A wonderful saleslady handed me a 7 ml tester. Got home, applied it and was in aw. What a patchouli woody spicy rose masterpiece. Absolutely adorable. The patchouli is soo immensely good. Just unbelievable. Performance is more than outstanding. A jewel in perfumery.

Still need to buy this. I wore it on a rainy February day to the zoo and it was beautiful. All brooding dark red veils of rose, incense, patchouli and raspberry. Exactly what I thought Lyric Man to have been.

I just received POAL. It’s patch and rose on me. Similar to Porpora, Gold Rose Oud, and Eau Capitale. My skin is just loves patchouli. #patchho4life😊

I absolutely love love love floral fragrances. I bought a sample online and instantly fell in love. It absolutely smells like a rose which is how I want to smell. It's sweet sexy, spicy, feminine and wow, I just don't want to stop smelling it. Now I want to purchase the full size, despite its price, I gotta have it. Its very powerful and just so good.

It's worth noting that the name, "Portrait of a Lady" doesn't imply that the fragrance is for a woman. Someone who wears a fragrance called "Portrait of a Lady" wants to explore and understand this woman, which is as much a masculine as it is a feminine trait.

There is no other like this scent of portrait of a lady this is why Sebastian always rates this fragrance.. you guys both have points I agree that my 2017 bottle is smokier than the 2019 bottle.. and the newer juice is as good as the older bottles.. the J.P Morgan of the fragrance business knows about Portrait.. and if u had class you’d know too.. ✌️

A gorgeous scent! Had the opportunity to smell it finally and the first thought that I was Cacharel Lou Lou!! To me, almost identical, in fact Lou Lou might just be stronger.

Hi, thanks for this video. I really enjoyed it. I just got a sample today, and I’m looking forward to wearing it tomorrow. Upon first sniff, it reminds me of Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose. I’m curious if you’ve smelled that one and how you would say it compares. Nirvana Rose, of course, is a much lower price point. Thanks so much!

Hi, Sebastian, i really like sisley soir de lune, somehow, when i first smelled POAL, i felt there are similarities, maybe because they both have patchouli and roses. I felt POAL is soir de lune without lemon and honey... i love both of them

Love when you guys review together....but just a quick mention....un and une sound the same....no emphasis on the “e” difference is un means the word is masculine and the une in feminine....if you were to emphasis you would emphasis the “n” in une and not so much in the un......✌🏽❤️🇨🇦.....again....love when you guys get together!!!

Speaking of stars, The Portrait of a Lady has been also adapted into a movie packed with stars, starring Nicole Kidman with John Malcovich, Viggo Mortensen, Christain Bale, Martin Donovan, and other iconic stars. Fun fact: Much like the perfume in respect of femininity/masculinity balance, the movie screenplay was written by Laura Jones, of course, based on Henry James Novel.

Great blog. I bought this gem a couple of months ago and, indeed, it’s definitely what “perfume as an art” is all about. The both of you talk about this scent being a masterpiece....curious, do the both of you think Baccarat Rouge 540 is on the same level or comes close to POAL or at the same perfumery level in terms of creative technical execution? Of course, they’re totally different scent profiles and vibes, but BR has a cult following as well. Cheers!

Funnily enough, this beautiful fragrance did not last on my skin at all, unlike Musc Ravageur that works great on me. I was sooo happy to find Porpora by Tiziana Terenzi that smells extremely similar, last forever and is half the price. Intoxicating rose.

I owned a bottle, but I think this is undeniably fem. It’s also too typical a “fruitchouli” in the Ropion style for my taste. Finally, my aunt has every POAL product made, and I can’t help but think of her when I smell it.

Hi Sebastian, people say the reformulated version of POAL is so not as good as the original, the sillage, scent and so on. I was considering purchasing one but now I am not so sure.

People always say that old formulations are better! It's a psychological phenomenon that happens caused by how the mind deals with scarcity. If it is rare or in short supply the mind will tend to desire it much more. Most of these reformulations are incredibly subtle. People also always complain that fragrances are less strong when actually you just go nose blind, especially to strong fragrances. POAL current bottles smell very strong!

Portrait of a Lady has a vintage quality that wasn’t my taste. It’s nice, but I already had Lumiere Noir Pour Femme. I live in Oakland, and I think I’m the only person in the office who wears perfumes on a daily basis. People in the Bay can be annoyingly anti-fragrance.

Unfourtunately reformulated a couple years ago. It is watered down and diluted. It lost it's huge performance and deepness. Still good but not as much as it used to be.

hi Joshua, i have too many fragrances to have one favorite--it depends on the day. one that consistently delights me these days is Sonia Rykiel Woman which is discontinued, another is patchouli intense by parfums nicolai. i've been posting on instagram about what i'm wearing/testing @theperfumeddahlia

The name Portrait of a Lady DOES effect my attitude towards it. Association is a big part of fragrance appreciation and the question is would I want to project a feminine association. I think the Fragrantica rating for this is unisex leaning feminine. But I'll probably pick it up at some point. After Musc Ravaguer. I show my collection off. Give private tours to friends. I explain each fragrance and so they'll ask about the name.
