Hauntingly beautiful.....I listen to Delius music at night when exercising and stretching. It brings tears to my eyes, so much sweet emotion it almost hurts. So hard to put into words.

This is supernatural music, and his Florida Suite much more so. It touches deep down inside me. Delius and Debussy are my favorite composers. There have been interesting debates and discussions as to which side of the spirit realm their music originated from.

I live in Perth,WA. In the city mall there used to be an elderly violinist who I took to be Czech and frequently played Dvorak as I cycled thru. I'd stopped to listen one day and asked him if he knew anything of Delius. With much emotion he replied - 'Ahh, you have a heart !' which to me sums up the music of Delius....Ian

Delius is one of the few composers that I find it right to listen to on a sunny summer afternoon, looking out of the window; much great music seems more appropriate in the evening, either in a concert hall or a private room. His music has light and air in it.

There's quite a difference between the first. version A Poem of life and Love and A Song of Summer. just.listen to the two versions on You tube Song of Summer is calmer but still retains Delius's iron resolution and passion for life
@JTPrime083 жыл бұрын
Beautiful composition, Frederick Delius was an awesome and amazing composer. Other than that, cool:).
The Poem of Life and Love shows the two sides of Delius. There is the tough side such as you find in “Paris” and the soft side. Delius knew well the tough side of Life.

This is a lovely and relaxing piece. Delius may not be considered to be a heavyweight in the same class as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven but he composed some gorgeous music. ¡Lo saludo, don Frederick!
@Lancaster3008 жыл бұрын
+Alan Bobe-Velez But Delius is a heavyweight. Other opinions need not influence yours. Enjoy this gorgeous music for what it is - heavyweight brilliance. Thank you Fred!
@alanbobevelez23648 жыл бұрын
+Lancaster300 I have always considered Delius to be a heavyweight. If this was not apparent in my initial commentary, I must apologize for any lack of clarity on my part. I have not been swayed by the opinions of others. I merely stated the conventional yet, as I see it, erroneous view of the body of work created by this magnificent composer. I have enjoyed this beautiful piece since I first heard it many years ago. Yes, thank you, Fred. ¡Qué viva Delius y su bella música!
It is appropriate that we have Fenby conducting. But for him, this beautiful piece would never have been written down or heard.
@ianjohnston10935 жыл бұрын
Delius and Fenby distilled this from a larger work 'A Poem Of Love and Life' which is a bit more complex than a' Song of Summer' showing more facets of Delius genius - I'd recommend 'A Poem...' .well worth a listen.Ian Johnston Perth Australia.

Delius has built an art of his own which has some debts to Debussy but in a less audacious way. He learnt the independance of chords, and many of his harmonic patterns are quite original. THe melodic language remains rather classical. There is a freSh freedom in his inspiration, while most of his british contempoaries had a more severe, more structured language. THis touch of freshness was necessary in the art of the beginning of the Century. Why qon't we hear Delius more often in our concert halls?

To all1rog: this piece HAD been written down before Eric Fenby came upon the scene. It existed in a two piano version entitled "A Dialogue of Life and Love" which has been published and of which I own a copy. All that remained for Fenby to do was to suitably recast it orchestrally according to the composer's dictation, along with perhaps some minor changes in a detail here and there. But what I am trying to emphasize is that this piece was not newly created when Fenby arrived. It had a sort of existence since around the mid-1920's at which time Delius' interest in it waned, apparently due to serious health problems. Upon recovery, his interest revived, but needed some assistance in completely fulfilling it. The Ken Russell documentary is probably responsible to a degree for the misconception that this piece was created from scratch when Fenby appeared, which is simply not the case.
