As a former OMC tech, this was somewhat painful to watch. But, you got the engine running again. A few of my former customers had this Glastron model (and the V173 - the 17' version) and these boats were notorious for transom rot. I would not launch this boat without first assessing the transom. Get a wet gage and hold it up to the transom. Determine if the transom is wet/rotted. I suspect it is and the former owner gave up on it because if this issue. Better yet, you can simply push down on the engine to see if there is any transom movement. If there is, don't launch. The engine will certainly destroy what's left of the boat.

Basically that boat and engine combo is a perfect all around boat almost like a Civic Si. Quick, reliable, pleasing to the eye. and very good handling. What's also nice is it can be a sporty lil day cruiser, decent ski boat. and a nice fishing boat too. They made a lot of those and a tri-hull version too

Always liked the look of those little Glastrons. You got an awesome deal on this one. Only real issue you have left is the transom as others have noted. More than likely you've got rot happening in there. Replacing the plywood thats in there isn't difficult, its just a little labor intensive (I did a lot of fiberglass work on boats in another life).

You should go around the boat 2/3 times spraying it down with water to allow the mould and dirt to soften up. Then start cleaning the dirt/mould off. Much easier when it's all pre softened.

You can bet that the plywood in the transom and deck is rotted sitting in a field for years. Older Glastron boats are collectible in southern markets restored. Cap off restoration isn’t to bad of a job but marine fir plywood for stringers and deck; as well as about 15 gallon of laminating resin, chop strand and biaxial fiberglass materials gets expensive.

from what i recall, these johnson/evinrude V4's have the same bore and stroke from 85 hp to 140 hp.. the difference is in carburation and the back plate.. the 140 has a big "hump" on the plate look into finding some larger carbs from say a 115 and get some more power out of her! and those glastrons are great little ski boats! they handle well don't throw a big wake and are easy to drive!

The 85 Johnson in 1978 had a smaller block 92.6 versus the 115 and 140 which had the 99.6 blocks (and the 140 having a tuned exhaust called a bubble back). That 85 is a great motor but you won't see any significant change with carb changes

It’s really bad to squirt thin penetrating oil in a motor. The thin oil will prevent the proper heavy viscosity oil from working. It’s a great way to destroy all bearings 👍. Thin oil offers no protection from friction and repels thick oil.

I have redone a few of these. They were noted for coming with the Mercury 115hp "Tower of Power," Silly fast... This one has the dreaded, but normal transom fatigue. Luckily, after softening the rubber cap from the rubrail with a heat gun, MANY MANY screws later the top comes off with just a little help at the transom. You ALSO have broken stringers. This ALL was pine and plywood... CHEAP, easy repairs after the top is lifted off and a gallon or two of epoxy. Be sure to have the top back on before re-epoxying the floor back in place. Enjoy!

New impeller, change out the lower unit oil. The starter sounds good. If it’s not heating up, it could just use a deeper cleaning. You need to get the carburetor cover And when you’re getting new plugs, go with Champion. Those older Evinrude/Johnson motors and NGK do not get along at the high RPMs. And there was a service bulletin from Johnson years ago to move that telltale hose up over the top right cylinder, and then down to the output. It helps prevent air pockets in the cooling chambers. I’ve got a 1983 Johnson 90 hp that was running on a 15 foot bass boat so that’s about the right size for that boat/motor combo. It’s probably rated for a 125.

That,s going to be a nice boat. That OMC Duratank could be an issue. My Johnson cuts out on high throttle, like a fuel starvation issue. I think its due to OMC's attempt to make those tanks EPA compliant with the venting. I tried everything with that tank but the motor runs perfect with a cheap old Atwood tank and a standard aftermarket fuel line with standard connectors.
