Grew up fishing and swimming in the Verde river canyon, proposed to my wife of 40 years just upstream from there. As a bit of history, there was a USS Indianapolis survivor that lived at the confluence of the Verde and Sycamore Creek. He and a partner prospected the area until their deaths. He claimed to have been struck by lightning 4 times, even showed us his scars! Once I was old enough to drive we would take him supplies (and a bottle from my Dad) in exchange for the best fishing worms I’ve ever used. Love this one!

That's awesome, Chris! We noticed there are still a couple houses at the confluence there. I wonder if the family is still there. I hear some people seem to draw in lightning strikes. 4 times! That's crazy to survive that. 👍😀

Taking Amtrak from Salt Lake City to Denver is amazing. It goes through areas of Colorado where the roads are no longer maintained and have collapsed so the only access to the mining ghost towns are via train tracks. I'm not a hug fan of train travel but that is a trip I would do again.

Looks like the Verde Valley RR. The train is a classic FP7 locomotive, 2 of only 10 still in existence today. It’s a 20 mile slow meander through the beautiful valley, while you are treated to finger foods, given a lot of interesting history of the area, and have the option to look out the window while in your seats or go out into the open box car area to experience beautiful scenery and mingle with people from all over the world. We thoroughly enjoyed the four hour ride out and back as well as our side trip to the old mining town of Jerome. It was a highlight of our trip to the Sedona area two years ago. Tickets per person are around $100 and well worth the cost in my opinion.

I can't wait to see your adventure on the Verde Canyon Railroad. It's my favorite railroad after the Durango & Silverton. As for the latter, be sure that you wait until the entire run is open. During the winter it only goes to Cascade Canyon then returns to Durango. It's a shame to miss the full run to Silverton.

If you camp on the furthest campsite on the point, there is a steepish trail that leads straight down (I'm 57 and did it no problem) that is just a few hundred feet. If you go the way the video went, it's about double the distance but a smoother slope. The pools are downstream about 1/4 (or less) mile.

Cottonwood snow is the seeds dispersing in the wind, like dandelion seeds do. I was in Zion NP one May and it was like a blizzard!.

Way to go Carrie, navigating that rough road. Hubby and I took the Royal Gorge Train ride- I highly recommend it. It's one hour south of Colorado Springs CO. Tip for this train is to definitely reserve seats on the river side and don't forget to go to the open car because there is someone there narrating the ride. (I did a video on it).

The train usually doesn’t run in the dead of winter, so ck ahead. Its beautiful anytime, most cars are open air so get close to the front to avoid smoke from engine! It costs a little more but if possible ride in the car with history narrator, we thought it was really worth it. Best Wishes always

Dave, Lots of train tours slow down so people can take photos, start watching youtube train tours like the rocky mountains tour and you will see what I mean. Train tours of Australia would interest Carrie, like The Ghan train, from Adelaide to Darwin or The Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth.

That makes good sense that they slow down for photo ops. We would love to go for one of those train rides! I will check out KZfaq to see what its like. Thank you for the tip..Australia is one of our dream destinations. 👍
