ERRATA: 32:16 The 'ntp authenticate' command isn't needed to enable NTP authentication. It is only needed when using 'ntp passive', 'ntp broadcast client' or 'ntp multicast client' - all beyond the scope of the CCNA exam. Check out www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios-xml/ios/bsm/command/bsm-cr-book/bsm-cr-n1.html#wp2231112076 for more information. To be fair, lots of other Cisco documentation and CCNA study materials state that this command is necessary, but that seems to be a misunderstanding. Try it out on some Cisco routers and you'll see it's not necessary!

Hello Jeremy and anyone finding this course helpful. I passed my CCNA last night and I can say that this course helped more than any other resource. For those preparing, who have taken CompTIA, this is far different than them. I had 86 questions and 4 labs, you can only move forward in the test, no flagging for review, no going back to change an answer so be prepared for that. I commented on the NTP video because 3 of my 4 questions had NTP setup with peers and clients. Two had setting up SSH connections. One was all VLANS and trunking. I got none on OSPF or STP which is where I spent the majority of my practice after reading about others experiences. I also used Boson practice tests. I also had quite a few regular questions on Wireless LAN setup and SDN. SDN was actually my strongest category which was strange since in Boson tests, Security was always my strongest, in the exam it was my weakest. Either way, thanks Jeremy! These are the best video resources and I commend you for taking the time to create these and all the resources and labs and provide them for free.

That's insane that you didn't get any STP or OSPF labs!!!! My first attempt, I couldn't even count how many questions I got about OSPF and IPv6, my two weakest categories back then. It appears everyone's exams can vary wildly and that you really have to be prepared for anything and everything.

whoever's studying and has come across this video on NTP... don't sleep on it! I was super confident on my ccna exam but I skipped over NTP during my studies because I felt it wasn't a huge topic to go into... i got like 5 questions that were related to NTP and I'm pretty sure I bomb'd them all. I got a 823 because of it and just missed the exam by 2 points LOL. I'll get it next time.... !!!

@@DaddyDagoth It is a very important security, performance and auditing feature. Lots of hackers attempt to screw up the timers and date/time stamps so you cannot see what was done in logs. Furthermore, having accurate and verified time stamps will increase the performance of the network. NTP is super super important. Learn thoroughly.

Being your channel members for years, I now can finally say i passes my CCNA exam last week !!! thank you so much Jeremy for providing this complete course as I wouldn't have made it without your effort To those who are preparing CCNA, just wanna share with you guys that the exam would contain 2-3 lab question which need you to do some hands on configuration, mine was involving in OSPF, ether channel and NTP and of course they carry huge portion of the marks so be prepare if you wanna score well : )

At this point i am just overwhelmed. I feel like the amount of information stored in my brain will flood out just like a switch floods out unknown unicast frames. So many mac addresses to remember and so many commands that are, is it just because I have not started my revision ( as i plan to finish the series first and then revise myself by using boson and revise the topics whose answer I fail to answer correctly. Ps I USE THE ANKI FLASH CARDS but at this point i think theres so much to remember and also 20 more videos info, commands, concepts.

When you use the 'ntp master' command, the router's NTP stratum level will be 8. It is syncing to itself (its internal clock), so in that case you can say the internal clock's stratum is 7.

For your final example : why it is not D ? ntp server {address | hostname}: NTP client/server mode-the device acts as both client and server. First, it acts as an NTP client, to synchronize time with a server. Once synchronized, the device can then act as an NTP server, to supply time to other NTP clients.
@JeremysITLab
@JeremysITLab 2 жыл бұрын
Are you asking about the Boson example? 'NTP SERVER x.x.x.x' configures the device to synchronize its time to the server specified in the command. This is static client mode. After synchronizing to that server it CAN be a server for other NTP clients, but in this case A is definitely the more correct answer.

Hello Jeremy, I would like to ask something about NTP. How can Routers, which are layer 3 devices, can communicate to a layer 7 level protocols? I am a bit confused about this. Maybe i misssed something. Your course is great. It is the reason i started learning networking. Thanks

I think im kind of retarded but I'll give this question a crack lmfao. Routers just forward packets to the destination it needs to reach via a next hop address if it has. I don't think it cares about communicating with anyhting beyond its layer as layer 7 is purely created by hosts that need whatever is going on over their lol. The routers job is just to make sure stuff is getting where it needs to be.

Is there a downside to having several ntp servers specified? An example - we have switches configured as ntp servers syncing to an external server. But sometimes these are not configured correctly or have other issues. In some configurations of our networks t different locations, there may not be a ntp server switch, so the devices on the LAN sync directly to the external sources. It has been a source of confusion for people with inconsistent ntp server settings, so I'm wondering if it isn't the easiest to simply configure our standard switch IPs as wel as the external server IPS (so we'd have 4 ntp servers instead of 2) for every device and if they automatically pick the best one, I should be set right? Is there a downside to this configuration?

Nah, you're literally setting yourself up with redundancy to multiple NTP servers incase shit hits the fan lol.

Hi Jeremy, I would like to ask something, when we use ntp master command, the router will sync to its internal clock, the "internal" in this scenario means software clock or hardware calendar? thanks in advance
@JeremysITLab

It'll sync to the software clock in this case

Thank you Jeremy Sir 🙏 Instead of using 127.127.1.1 address for master clock. Can we specify any other loopback address to use as it's NTP master clock.

Sometimes it is annoying, some commands you teach or illustrate during lecturing are not in packet tracer.
@JeremysITLab

Unfortunately many commands aren’t available in packet tracer, but it’s good enough for the CCNA. Definitely look into other options for further study after the CCNA though.

For the NTP key-number does it have to match on both client and server? Obviously, the key itself has to be the same but can the numbers be different per machine?

In the diagram at 17:05 the CISCO NTP servers are at Stratum 2 or they can connect directly to the Straum 0?
@JeremysITLab
@JeremysITLab 2 жыл бұрын
A Cisco IOS device (router, switch) can't sync directly to a stratum 0 device (an atomic clock). The best they can sync to is a stratum 1 server, so the IOS device will be stratum 2.
