At the end I've smiled at the title of the video, containing "strategy", while most of the game was so much tactical. And then they made a really important point, how much of an impact these preparational moves had. Without a single one of these moves half of this tactics wouldn't work. A really important message made by both lectures here is that you have to know when preparations are enough and it's time to go for tactics

If i am not mistaken, this could have ended much sooner. 17:30 if we place queen to h8 we are giving check, and black can either take the queen with bishop or move his queen to the g8. If black takes the queen with bishop, we just take bishop with rook, so in the end black is forced to play queen g8. Now we can move knight to g6 giving a check, forcing black king to move away from black queen. Then we take the black queen giving the check mate.

I took a few lessons from John Bartholomew. He's super chill, and I enjoyed them. I wish top level chess players pushed for more chess 960 or no castling variant, however, as I just don't appreciate all the opening theory that has to be learned to play chess at top levels. ~2000 USCF player here, so not like that was what was holding me back, but it sure feels that way. Arimaa and chess960 both get out of the 'opening book' within a move or two, none of this, "...and now as of move 17, we have a completely new game." Love your play Magnus, thanks for being dr drunkenstein and not super uptight/paranoid like some prior WCs!
