I am new to eco printing, I tried the mordant eco printing as I just discovered this. But I also nuno felt and have been making children’s clothing for several decades but stepping into a new life and knew I needed something more to express what I was envisioning. This was it…. But then you came along with the dirty pot method, of course I want to go with this method, I am trying to keep my whole life as environmentally friendly and live off the land as much as possible… but I need to find your subscription this is a much needed craft for me to Master… I’ll hunt down a nice big cauldron if possible, I have my fire pit out back, I’m ready to get the dirty pot going.. oh I live in Maine USA, near Acadia National Park along the coastline about 50 miles from the Canadian border, to basically give you the geographical area 😊 now to find that subscription you offer

Hey Sharon, it's lovely to meet a fellow artisan maker who is interested in the environment and working sustainably! Greetings from Ireland. I'm going to be opening up my club for new members towards the end of January (registration will only stay open for 4 days) and then it will be closed again until the second or third quarter of '23. The reason for this is that I like to really make sure new members integrate into the group and it's easiest for me and Shauna (my VA and right hand woman) to have everyone start at the same time! If you sign up for my weekly newsletter you will get all the advance notification, here's the link for you. members.nicolabrown.ie/newsletter

Thank you for the presentation! Love your work. I live in what is called "deep east" Texas near to the Louisiana border. We have rolling hills, tall pine trees and oak trees. Most people used to be farmers for dairy, raise cattle and grow gardens. I am re-retired from nursing now that covid has slowed down in the south and want to raise plants for ecodyes and learn more about the subject. It is one of my learning gifts that I give to myself each year!!!

Hi Sabine, I think that you're going to love working without powdered mordants! It always seems so elemental somehow, simple and natural with such wonderful results. Of course not everything will give good colour or washable prints without them and that's why it's so important to start with the basics.

Hi Nicola! Watched on replay as livestream was at 4am for me in Brisbane. Thank you for sharing so many helpful tips with us. I really enjoyed the video! Have one question to clarify if you don't mind. Did you mean that either wax paper (greaseproof) or baking (parchment) paper can be used as a barrier? I understand that wax paper is not heat resistant but it's more environmentally friendly and is cheaper. Can I really use wax paper or it should be heat and water resistant paper like parchment paper? You answer will be much appreciated!
@clasheen
@clasheen 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anastasia, apologies for my slow reply but I just got bogged down with family stuff behind the scenes. I use a waxed paper that I got from a re-cycling centre and it hold up really well to the boiling process. It's easy to wipe down and I find that I can simply reuse it Just try some of your less precious bundles first to make sure what you have access to works but I think you will find it should.

When I dye my carrier blanket for eco printing, do I let the dry fabric set in warm water for awhile before I put it in the dye? I just dyed some without wetting the fabric and it came out blotchy? Pls help
@clasheen
@clasheen 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Deborah, I specialise in working without traditional powdered mordants so this is really a question that you would be better asking someone else, it’s not applicable when printing in the dirty pot. However, when eco printing with a dye blanket you don’t actually dye the blanket and let it dry, you soak the blanket in the dye and then apply it wet. Your blotchiness definitely wasn’t helped by the fact that your blanket was dry. Also, if you actually dyed the blanket and then expected it to transfer colour that’s not going to work well. You need to soak fabric that has NOT been mordanted in the dye solution and then use it. The dye won’t have been absorbed by the fabric so instead will transfer onto the piece you want to print, which SHOULD have been mordanted. Does that make sense?
@deborahcost217
@deborahcost217 2 жыл бұрын
After you scour and mordant your fabric and dye your fabric can I then eco print and do I have to remordant the dyed target fabric before I eco ptint? Also, I bought alum for pickling, is this appropriate to use for cotton to mordant Thanks so much
@clasheen
@clasheen 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Deborah, I specialise in eco printing without using traditional powdered mordants so while I can answer your questions these topics are not something that I discuss often. Firstly, if you wash, scour, mordant and then dye fabric you can certainly eco print on it afterwards. Some plants discharge colour and some will print over the dye. I would mordant (for the second time) before printing (based on information learnt from a natural dye master) but not everyone would. However, it’s far easier to mordant your fabric correctly, soak in natural dye, add your vegetation and then process both together by steaming. This is a brief synopsis, not the full method. I suggest you check out Caroline Nixon if you are interested in a workshop. Secondly, the alum (Potassium Alum Sulphate) that you have bought for pickling is not suitable for mordanting cellulose fabric but it is for protein based (wool and silk etc.). For cotton you are going to need Alum Acetate and chalk or bran to fix it properly otherwise you won’t get the results you are looking for. Good luck!

Hei Nicola! I have ecoprinted just a couple of pillowcases. I used only vinegar in the beginning to wet that fabric. I like very much the result though it's very light. What do you suggest me to do with a white dress which is made off line, silk and modal. It's totally new. How should I wash it before ecoprinting. Especially the temperature and the ecoprinting so that I don't destroy the silk Thank you very much if you have time to answer me Anne from Finland🇫🇮
@clasheen
@clasheen 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne, I'm so sorry that I didn't see your question sooner, apologies for my slow reply. I am not a big fan of eco printing fabric that is a mixture of different fibres. Silk takes the colour very easily and only needs a good wash in an olive oil soap solution and a vinegar water preparation before printing but linen and modal need a rust water dip (see video 3 in this series). When fabric is partially protein (silk) and cellulose (your linen and modal) you are not going to get such good results as if it was made from only one sort of fibre. In relation to the heat, whatever you decide to do if you are printing without traditional powdered mordants you need to boil for the best results, even wool, cashmere and silk! Because the bundles are tied tightly they will not come to any harm.

@@clasheen Hi Nicola! Thank you for your answer 😊 I'll continue doing my eco printing to get more experience and maybe someday I have enough courage to eco print the dress. This is so fascinating ❣️

What temperature would you hold at for a successful mordant?

This is excellent information, thanks. But does anyone know where you can buy an aluminium pot these days? Most cooking pots are thankfully now stainless steel, or ceramic. Or else coated with Teflon/non-stick material. (yuk!) I can't find any cookware store with aluminium pots. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Thoughts have changed about how cooking in aluminium pots might have a detrimental effect on health Lyre so in Europe we can certainly buy them, although not in most shops. The best places to find them are thrift stores, salvage yards, antique shops (sometimes) and don’t forget to ask your friends. Many people have large ham pots in their garage that they never use and will be happy to donate!

@@clasheen Thanks for your prompt reply, Nicola! Yes, I will seek out some op shops or salvage yards for pots and also metal pipes. Also, I hope it's not rude but from an environmental perspective, I'd really encourage people to use electricity (preferably from renewable energy) if they can, rather than methane gas. I know we're not talking about a large amount of gas to boil a pot for artwork but it's a potent greenhouse gas we should avoid if possible.

I have an old rusty roasting tin. Don’t know what the metal is but do you think it would be suitable? Thank you.

How about cotton does it work the same as wool and silk?

Hi Rodney, cotton does print but needs different pre-treatment for successful results. Check out video 3 in this bootcamp series!

Nicola, is there a difference in using red or brown onion skins?
@clasheen
@clasheen 2 ай бұрын
Most times there is. Brown skins give much more golden and yellow tones and red shift towards olive. However, this isn't always true as it depends on the actual onions and the growing conditions!

Here’s a video which should help you if you need more information about how to set up your eco printing pot. I recommend that the pot itself is aluminium for the best results when starting out. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7hjo8Vn3tLOoIU.html

Caroline’s beautiful top with Walnut leaves could have been mordanted with copper? This may give you colour of those Walnut leaves in your dirty pot.

Hi Neena, her top was definitely eco printed in the dirty pot with no powdered mordants at all. It’s just that her tree gives different prints than mine!!!
