I subscriber asked me how often should he feed his Chihuahua and how long can they be left alone. Many dog owners and breeders say that dogs need to be on a feeding schedule. Feed them in the morning and evening. However, Chihuahuas are a special breed! (*of course, we knew that!) A concern that is unique to Chis is that they are easily susceptible to low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia. This is a scary and potentially dangerous condition for Chihuahuas.

So the best approach is to "free feed" which is to just have food out for your sweetie pie at all times.
The second part of the question was regarding how long we can leave our Chihuahuas home alone. If your Chihuahua is healthy, an adult, and above 5 pounds, there's really no reason you can't leave him or her home alone while you go off to work, say 8-9 hours, again, as long as there is plenty of water and food available.

I always loved big dogs. Always wanted big dogs. (Me that is) but then my wife got a Chihuahua. She is the greatest, most beautiful thing/event of my life. She is our little baby. She is never without one of us, we probably spoil her more than we should. she is so affectionate, loving and so clever. She is so DOG (Just little). She loves me so much, I could have never have dreamed that I would experience so much joy and happiness from a Chihuahua, but I do. From now on, all we will ever have will chihuahuas for dogs. THEY ARE THE BEST! So in love with Chihuahua's.

Thank you for this beautiful comment. I know EXACTLY what you mean. I was always a big dog lover and hated little "yappy" dogs, but that was only because I had never experienced a psychologically healthy Chihuahua. As soon as I did, my entire perspective changed. Chihuahuas really are WONDERFUL dogs. They've earned a bad reputation for themselves but I truly feel that's human's fault. They make excellent family companions. ❤️

My 15yr old Chihuahua eats 1-2 x’s a day. Extremely healthy rescue who walks 1-2 miles a day w/ me (was running that distance w/ me until a year ago). Many days he only has one meal a day, if he wants more he lets me know. Please don’t overfeed your animals my friends, their health is our responsibility 🙏

Ironmurs. I agree with you. One of chihuahuas tends to be on the heavy side so free feeding for her would be a disaster 😂😂

Once is optimal. Mine can’t go over 12 hours without food for now. He’s 1 year old. But that would be the goal for his health. I feed him every 9-12 hours.

My two month old chihuahua never eats the whole thing at once, he eats little by little and take a lot of naps so I just put a little food in the bowl and gradually the bowl gets empty it’s literally impossible to schedule feed a dog so small lol

It’s possible. I tried free feeding and feeding twice a day. When mine was 2 months he would eat 3 times a day.

My Dog won't eat anytype of dog food I got her as a puppy but she is a year old know and I've tried basically every brand I've seen and she just refuses to touch the dog foods so I ended up having to cook up chicken, salmon, beef, turkey with dog safe veggies just to get her to eat but she is really healthy and very hyperactive but I did my research and talked with a local vet to make sure how to properly prepare human food for dogs beforehand since she didn't like the taste of dog foods.

my chihuahua won’t eat dry kibble alone no matter what we try so we’ve been mixing his dry food with some wet food and that works best for him he’s now three years old and healthy from what we can tell should we be changing anything we do?

Thank you for all your posts:) we just brought home a new family member and he turned three months old over the weekend! His name is Bruno. We are planning on eventually taking away the pee pads and train him to go outside. We’d like to crate train him but leaving the food/water access would mean more potty breaks during the night or needing pee pad access for during the night, right? We crate trained our other pups we had before (older chi and a Boston terrier) that we only had their bed in the crate when we were away or at night when sleeping(they were potty trained outside). We didn’t want them to roam the house during the night. I guess in short, what are your recommendations for potty training for outside VS always pee pads? Or when to start outside training after all updated shots? Sleeping (night time) with/without food/water? Thanks for your help in advance and apologize for it being long and possibly confusing 😬 we are new to puppy stages hope this makes sense.

Is she maintaining a healthy weight? Sometimes they can be picky eaters. I like to free feed mine meaning they have access to their bowl of hard kibble at all tones. Some of them are grazers and perfect to eat a few bites of food here and there throughout the day rather than specific meal times. I feed mine the all stage dog food from this website: www.BuyLifesAbundance.coml Life’s Abundance is a small company who pays particular attention to quality. They make small batches of food and ship directly to the consumer’s door. They don’t sell their product in any stores for freshness reasons. Struggling to find information about snacks and treats for my new 8 week old Chihuahua Kingston. He hasn't been eating much today and sleep is a struggle for him I think because he is hungry. Any suggestions are great!

Sorry to hear about your little sweetie pie. My guess is he only recently came to his new home to live with you? This transition is the most stressful time in his life. He misses his mother and nursing and possibly even siblings. It’s quite common for them to lose their appetite because of the stress. I recommend not to give him snacks at all because he really needs the nutrition from a healthy kibble. If you can’t get him to eat his kibble then go ahead and soak it in some chicken broth to soften it and make it a little tastier. Feed him only tiny amounts at once and I recommend you get down on the floor with him and baby talk while you hand him tiny bites. It seems like a silly thing to do but I can’t tell you how many times this has been the only way I could get a tiny sweetie pie to eat. Spend lots of time with him and reassure him often. Typically within about three days he will start to feel more comfortable in his new home and will bond with whoever spends the most time with him and feeds him. I wish you and him the very best ❤️

@@SweetiePiePets Thank you so much for replying! I added a little organic chicken breasts to the kibble and he is loving it. When he finishes the chicken breasts I just leave the kibble in his feeding area until the next meal and I find he typically finishes it. Thanks for your advice and videos; you totally convinced me to choose a chihuahua and we live him!

This was great, thanks, been searching for "home cooked dog food recipes allergies" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Donulian Astounded Dominion - (do a google search ) ? It is a good one of a kind product for discovering how to discovering the secret the dog food industry is hiding minus the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got amazing results with it.

I prefer to free feed so they have access to their food at all times. If you prefer scheduled meals, you can remove it and bring it back when it’s meal time.

@@SweetiePiePets I just got him 3 days ago and the only time I saw my pup drink water was on the first day we got him, but he only drank about 4 or 5 licks and then he stopped ever since. Could it be caused by some type stress? I think the wet Caesar food packets are giving him water which could be the reason why he is still on his 4 paws? I don’t know if that would make sense

Sthefani Urias I feed all of my Chihuahuas the small/ medium breed puppy kibble from www.BuyLifesAbundance.com This is my favorite brand of dog food and if you keep your sweetie pie on that diet, their coat will become silky soft and healthy in about 6 months. That being said, recently I had a couple puppies with some specific health issues so I followed the diet of a pet nutritionist who completely fixed their health issues simply with diet. That experience really taught me that even if Life’s Abundance is the best dog food brand out there, occasionally a dog might need something specific in their diet that no dog food would have. I’m hoping to do a whole video on that subject in the next month or so. Stay tuned and good luck with your puppy.

I have a baby chi, she’s 4 months, we feed her 4 times a day, I have to go back to work in a month as it turns out and I’m really worried about leaving my little baby, I’m not worried about her feeding or her safety as we live in a puppy proofed house, but I’m worried that she will be lonely and depressed, would getting another chi help? I don’t have any family to come in and check on her, and can’t afford doggy day care 😢

Sophie Dainty awe, I totally understand your concern. They do get lonely when they spend too much time alone so getting her a companion before you go back to work might be an excellent idea to prevent her from getting depressed.

What's the reasoning of the chihuahua needing to be 5+ lbs in order to be left home longer hours? If the dog is 2-3 lbs adult and has access to food and water and pee pads how long could it be left for? I am home all day but sometimes I have doctor appointments or go out to a movie/shopping so, that's about 4-5 hours, could my 3 month old 1.5 lb puppy safely be left alone in her cage with food, water and pee pads?

Well, you’re right, there’s not really a magical number that makes them safe. It’s just that once you get down to the smaller sizes they are more fragile and their food intake needs to be more closely monitored. A 2.5 pound baby really needs to eat a little bit of food every few hours for her while life, so I always worry about leaving the tiny ones home alone. Sometimes even when they have food available, they don’t necessarily have an appetite and depression and anxiety can be appetite suppressants. Low blood sugar is a very common (and can be deadly) concern for the tiny ones.

So I feed all my dogs Life’s Abundance, but I think they’re a United States company so I’m not sure if they ship to Australia. They won’t sell to pet stores since their main concern is freshness. Their food is packed full of essential fatty acids and probiotics which have a shelf life. Other dog food brands claim to have probiotics, and I’m sure they do when they are very first made but if they sit on some warehouse shelf for a year, how many probiotics are still alive by the time your sweetie pie eat it?
