It would be nice if Autodesk give us an option to use generative design for free on our local computers processor. Even if it would take many times longer, it would be a nice option.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Utmahr. I did chat with someone at Autodesk about this. They claim that one would need a "super computer" to get it to process locally. My guess is that it could be done on a standard computer that can already run Fusion 360, but it would likely tie it up for quite a few hours (something they're likely trying to avoid, especially as their big push is for everyone to utilize F360s cloud features). It would be great if they added a set number of cloud credit per each Personal Use license (per year) so that we could continue to run studies and or simulations throughout the year. Cheers, Kevin :)

@@ProductDesignOnline Thank You for information. First part about need to compute long hours is not really a problem for enthusiasts. I did some renderings in engines like Maxwell Render which took up to few days on my computer, and still was very proud of myself ;) I guess that part of pushing everyone to utilize their cloud is a real reason it is turned off. Still, even without that feature I am really grateful for possibility of using this software for free. Thanks again.

@Thu Nell Ⓥ I rendered hundreds of images through architecture school using Vray, this can't be that different. It honestly should be allowed to use your own computer to generate designs, same with their option to render

Completely agree with this, only companies would use the credit system where they require speed to get a product out. For enthusiasts it would be an awesome option to use on's own computer to render and use generative design.

Thanks Kevin! Great video! My own personal worthless opinion as someone who designs for a living, is that I am fine with paying for products that work miraculously well and can allow me to do the work that 4 engineering use to take an entire week to do. If that only costs me 33$ USD, then that's a steal! Plus, Autodesk works for a living and I support people who supply the world with value rather than complain that they don't work for free!

Hi, Dennis. That would be a great addition to the new Personal Use license. Maybe if they even issued so many cloud credits per year. As of now, the only "discounts" they give license holders for cloud credits are with their contracts for the companies that are paying many license seats. Fortunately, we can render and do some of the other things locally without the need for the credits. Cheers, Kevin :)

YES on the extension Kevin, you did a GREAT demo for this new feature for us, BUT as a hobbyist this example is WAY past our world of fusion use. Would you consider another demo down to our level with something we could or would really use? For example something simple like a hinge on your box or something in our real world?? Now most of us can 3d print, and then we could try it out. Our new version of Fusion 360 in for Non Commercial use …… HOBBYIST for example. Non production for "ONE off" things we might need. I am tryin to figure out a spout for my G scale coaling tower that must pivot or hinge up to get away from the loco tender, as a hobby example. Once again a GREAT job on your demo presentation on this subject, BUT it would be more fun to put this to use on something we could really use.

Hello Kevin, watching your videos and receiving your input on the past week has been helping me a lot. However I've encountered another problem. The STL I'm working on was made in sketchup, and my model is not the same size as the original file when I insert it. For example in height it should be 32", but when I open the stl it says 12.73". I read a little bit about this issue being the fact that fusion360 doesn't really work with units, but I don't quite understand how to fix it. Do you mention this in any of your videos, what do you suggest?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Some Lilliputian. Did you upload the file to your data panel or use the insert mesh command? STL files are do not have units, meaning the file doesn't contain a unit measurement along with the rest of the file's data. The best way to create a design in Fusion 360 that contains a mesh is not to use "upload", instead do this: 1. Download the file from other program/website 2. Start a new Fusion 360 file and use the Insert > Mesh command from the Insert menu. 3. Pick mm units in the insert dialog. (or whatever units provide the correct result) 4. Save the file, it is now a Fusion 360 design, containing a mesh that is scaled to the right proportions (which is what you were trying to achieve by using "upload"). The difference is that Upload assumes all unitless files (.stl or .obj) are made with CM units, and Insert Mesh allows you to pick the units. Cheers, Kevin :)

Have you ever used ParaMatters/CogniCAD Generative design? I've been using it a bit today for a motorcycle bar clamp design. Pretty cool and intuitive software, though my first two attempts at it were rough. First one barely removed any material because of a boundary condition error, and the second attempt basically cut everything away except the "non-design" (basically the preserve) features... Fairly positive that these results are due to me setting up the BCs and loads incorrectly.

The time really depends on the design and the amount of filters/restrictions you have in place for each GD Study.

Hi, Bill. No worries! Generative Design is really only useful in mass-manufacturing where parts savings can total large sums (typically millions). Nonetheless, it doesn't hurt to get a high-level overview to know what it is and to recognize parts out there. Cheers, Kevin :)

Is it possible to make a generative design in Fusion 360 of a organic design that act as a custom mandible implant? with the goal to reduce material but substain the forces involved in a human mandible(75 Pounds).
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 2 жыл бұрын
Without having full context, that sounds like it's better suited for Topology Optimization in the Simulation Workspace. The difference is that you start with the existing geometry (or existing product design) and the software will subtract all of the un-needed material based on the forces/things you input. With Generative Design, it would be a challenge to get a feasible shape (based on what I'm seeing with a few Google searches).

@@ProductDesignOnline thank you for answering. I was thinking the same, looks like it is better suited for a topological optimization. For a little more context; half of a mandible including the condyle need to be cut and a custom titanium(additive manufacturing) prosthesis need to be designed. We need to reduce material to reduce the cost. Thanks again!

I really hope Autodesk allow us to use generative design for free on local computer . Does anyone know any good free stand alone generative design software? @Product Design Online
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Derron. From what I hear/know, running it local won't be feasible. The folks at Autodesk claim it takes too much computing power and wouldn't be feasible unless you had a "super computer" or a bunch of servers. There are a handful of standalone Generative Design tools. Although, I'm not sure if any of them are free or have a free trial. Check out page 5 of this PDF - bit.ly/generativeDesign Cheers, Kevin :)

@@ProductDesignOnline Hey Kevin, i tried to get access to generative design, but Autodest wouldn´t allow me to use this item. I am a student from Cologne Germany and currently working on my bachelor thesis. the topic for my thesis is generative design. I wonder if you know more about the ability to use generative design in other countries like germany. I also contacted the support but they tould me i am not allowed to use it with my study licence.

@@lennartborgfeldt Hi Lennart. From what I heard... Autodesk said that Generative Design will only be available to the "200 Partner Schools" with the education license. Next year it is supposed to eventually roll out to all education license types. In the meantime, so that you can work on your thesis, I would recommend signing up for a separate Personal Use license, which will give you access to Generative Design for the rest of the year. You will need to create a second Autodesk account with another email (your personal email). Then, simply follow the steps that I have outlined on this page - productdesignonline.com/tips-and-tricks/how-to-download-and-install-the-fusion-360-personal-use-license/ Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi, Schack Lindemann. The Generative Design is available to Education Licenses with all 200 of the Autodesk "Partner Schools". With that said, I've heard that they have plans of making Generative Design free for all EDU licenses in 2020 (we'll have to wait to see). In the meantime, you'll have to sign up for a free Personal Use license to give Generative Design a try. Cheers, Kevin :)
