Had the exact same problem of overflowing carb. Ya gotta watch those after market carbs! Great little mower when its running right, but a nightmare to work on. Thanks for sharing the pain and pleasure of this repair.

I had to smile and sympathies all the way thru this, I have an LX178 which has the same style carb and fuel pump as this, the other day mine started dumping fuel out of the carb so I immediately suspected something in the carb needle and seat area (original 1996 oem carb) took it apart and found the plastic tab on the float that pushes on the needle cracked. Could not find a replacement float at a reasonable price so bought a clone carb off amazon. Same problem leaking fuel, in the meantime I noticed fuel pump leaking so replaced it. fussed with the new carb needle and seat, never could get it to stop leaking. Put the old original carb back on but used the float from the new carb. Bingo all is well. As it turns out the Amazon carb that I stole the float from was still cheaper than buying just a replacement float. Reading Amazon reviews a number of ratings of 1 star because no matter what they leaked, ie bad needle or seat.

Ive been lucky Casey , only got one bad after market 4 cycle bad carb and one bad two cycle carb - so far ......When I was working on them I ordered from Amazon with free returns - best way as far I can say to order a Carb .

Thanks for mentioning the spacer behind the fuel pump. I didn't notice it when I took the old one off my LX178. Blew out a new pump in two minutes and I couldn't figure out why fuel was pouring out the top of the carb. No other video I've watched mentioned it. Thank you for ending my two week headache.

I'm working on a 178 right now , I also ordered a carb with reservations because it's aftermarket, and a lot of reviews complained about carb over filling . If I have to use the old carb, I'll have to steal some parts off the new one because whoever worked on it messed it up . Good job . Also, where I live and you run a shop , all safety interlock switches have to be hooked up and working when it leaves !!!

the old john deere 160, hydro 165, 170, hydro 175, 180, and hydro 185's all have nice heavy duty fiberglass hoods that you can modify to work on these. i have done it several times since the plastic hoods are junk. If you run across an old parts machine (the ones i listed) with a hood, save it just for this occasion!

Great video! I followed it step by step to replace my carburetor, except for the linkage in the back, I could not connect it as you showed, so I removed the nut at the bottom of the lever and was able to connect it.

Some nice work on this lx188 looks like the original carb fixed this issue with the fuel leaking , must have been a badly assembled carb that is defective. I wish those John deere hoods were more durable and not break off of them now

My mower is an lx188 it did the same thing. Overflowed for a minute but then it stopped. Has the surging issue still

I’ve used more fuel hose in the last couple of years than I have in 10 years, it’s just gets hard and cracks or stops up on the inside Fuel caps the rubber seal breaks and falls in tank also Very common problems

I unbolt the linkage bracket and leave the links on so you don't have to mess with the wires and springs

Good job, Casey, One thing that I recommend on these older riders is to add an in-line fuel shutoff just in case there are leak issues. (especially if you are already rebuilding the fuel line as you did here) It is a lot quicker than searching for a clamp or vise grips to stop the flow. The blades didn't sound like they were up to speed but that may be a belt issue. On the donor LX178, do you know if the ignition module/switch is good? I have had to replace this on my 178 with another used part and it acts like it is going out as well. These are about $300 from Deere and of course, these mowers aren't worth pricy parts like that. As you know I'm just about 40 mins away so let me know and I can come harvest the part if you would prefer. Thanks. (Tom in Hillsborough)

To anyone...I have a J.D LX178. Was running at end of last season. This season will start, but then cut out after 2-5 seconds. Probably needs a new belt as well as battery. Probably not experienced enough to diy. Burns a little oil. Is this worth having someone repair? Guessing may need a new carb and fuel pump. Probably not looking to spend over $400 or so.

I'm definitely no expert on mower repair, however, I was wondering if the carburetor studs couldn't be backed out to allow easier removal of the carburetor?

My LX188 surges at idel but has great power and no surge on full. Any ideas?
