Welcome back! In this short episode I take you along with the revival of an old 1980 Johnson Evinrude OMC 7.5 hp two stroke Seahorse propeller drive outboard motor. I found this several years ago just overgrown in the grass behind somebodies house, and recently I was walking in the saem area and remembered the motor, so I decided to pop by the house and ask if they were doing anything with it. Turns out they weren't even aware it was back there, and so they let me take it for free! Not a bad deal, from that regard! No history is known other than it sat there, exposed and on the ground for several years. The previous owner tried to get it running, but was unsuccessful and so left it to die :(. Well, now that we got our hands on it she's back on the transom and pushing an old boat around once more!
All told, this motor went from abandoned and overgrown to rippin' around the lake in approximately 25 hours. Couldn't have had more fun doing anything else!
Maybe we will explore sand casting to try and make a toroidal propeller for the unit... Enjoy!

Wow! I finally found a man on KZfaq that is more hard headed than I am. I spent an hour cranking on my old Evinrude fastwin until I finally decided it was time to clean the carb. I now have 6 different outboard motors, all old 2 stroke. Now, the first thing I do is take the carb out and clean it. They always start second pull. 😂

Project farm it first! The ol drill trick often forces enough fuel through the system to self clean em. Then if they're still gummed up after 'running' take em apart and clean them properly, which is definitely the proper way to do it, haha.

HELL YEAH. GET UP MAN. !!! Great job. I only got a beat up 9.9 myself. Redid it from scratch like yours. Found dead. For 200 .$ & revived. Runs great. Can't beat it. !

I've got one of these motors. Through bad experience, I learned that the water level needs to be higher than you have it when running the motor in the bucket😑. At least just over the horizontal fins. Great video!

Totally agree with you. For tests, it's okay but definitely don't run em for extended periods, or you will cook the impeller. Ideally, I'd get a bigger bucket... hahaha.

Your a lucky SOB for sure, wish I could have found that 1980 7.5hp. They were great runners although they do have a few unforgiveable engineering flaws. Please replace that water pump impeller, don't ever run these engines out of water, even for a few seconds. You will burn up the impeller. Worse yet, the rubber impeller could disintegrate and plug up your cooling system. Replacing the water pump on one of these is fairly simple job, be sure to change the gear lube as well

Hi Troy. Lov the vid. I've just fixed the tiller arm on my 6hp johnson. It seems you are missing two tiny plastic caps that come on the top ends of the pin you changed. They then glide in the channel of the tiller arm . 😊

Hmmm. That would make sense. Theres alot of slop in the throttle linkage as it is right now. Maybe I'll take apart my 15's throttle linkage and see if they're the same and then maybe I can make some for the 7.5. Thanks for the tip!

@troymachovec FYI I was given a Yamaha tiller arm with the project and guess what, some of the parts are interchangeable with the Johnson 🤫 the cable on mine snapped at the end as it was forced. I replaced it with the Yami cable,fits right in no issue and the original johnson pin fits into the Yami cable😉

Serial number is not always right. The correct age is through the model nr. (At least for Johnson) The last two letters are the code for the year. Mine sais also 96 on the serial but the model no reveals that it is from 85. If it's older then from 1980 then the thing looks different again. But! Neither or less...happy for your find! 😅 Oh! And the mod number reveals also that your engine is a 8hp engine
@troymachovec
@troymachovec Жыл бұрын
Your correct! I can't remember the model no. at this point, but I think it was a mid 80's build. Ill have to correct it in the next video. Got a bunch of loose ends to fix up on it!

Looking to the end I noticed there was no flow on your cooling system. Either the impeller is shot, or the thermostat needs replacing. I picked up a Mercury 7.5 for 120$, and I replaced both since I got a deal on the motor. I would do the same for yours since it runs so nice.
@MESABOOGIE01
@MESABOOGIE01 Жыл бұрын
Your motor looks like an early to mid 80s model, judging by the decals on it. And you might have something stuck in the tube that the impeller pumps the water through, most likely dirt dobbers. Should be spraying out a good stream of water. Probably be safe to say that it needs a new impeller as well.
@troymachovec
@troymachovec Жыл бұрын
My 15 is identical to this at idle, and it has a new impeller. When it's running WOT it does have a solid stream. You might be on to something though, because I also have an old Mercury and it does pass more water than either of my 'rudes at idle.

@@troymachovec I don’t know much about Mercurys, but I’ve grown up around and had Evinrude/Johnson my whole life. However, in these times I’d probably get a Mercury. Evrinrude BRP doesn’t build fuel motors anymore, and I’m not a fan of Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, or Tohatsu.

Of course, you are well done, but I know from my experience that such an amount of pumping with a kickstarter is very harmful to the plastic crown, leads to wear and destruction, why couldn't the carburetor be cleaned right away? It's quite easy and fast. I myself am from Russia, your motors are very appreciated compared to the motors of the USSR, where the quality of performance was terrible, how many times I had to return from fishing on oars.

I wanted to see if the drive components were okay before buying a bunch of parts. But your right, it does wear the ripcord alot to pull it so much. If I didnt drop it in the lake it probably wouldn't have needed so many pulls.

Honestly, I haven't ran it since the video... Got too busy with work in the summer and now all the lakes are frozen... Unfortunately, I don’t know the part#. You might be able to solder or JB weld a sleeve onto it so you can reattached it?

I can not pull the pull cord to turn the fly wheel, it seems stucked. but if I use wrench to turn the fly wheel, it turn for 360 degree, that means the engine is not siezed. but what make the cord spinner not driving the fly wheel?
@troymachovec
@troymachovec Жыл бұрын
The retrieve on the ripcord must be broken. Take it apart. It sounds like it's stuck with the cord pulled and the release engaged, which is why you can turn it over with a wrench.
