Hey guys, last night I reached 10,000 subscribers on KZfaq and to celebrate I've put together this free lesson for all of my subscribers. It's about the Augmented scale and teaches you a very cool, and frightening lick and the concepts involved with this fantastic scale.
Thanks to all my subscribers for all the support up to now and in the future.
Cheers,
Tom

The augmented scale is constructed from repeating Minor 3rd and semitone intervals. It isn't the same as the wholetone scale (which can be played over and augmented chord). The scale yields these 3 major 7 arpeggios/chords, plus many others too. Great scale!

I love the augmented scale. I first discovered it from the soundtrack on the old 80's movie "Wargames". Such a beautiful, dark sound. It wasn't till years later that I realized its applications in jazz. It adds so much to jazz, especially for making your maj7 resolutions more adventurous. Great stuff.

Thank you very much! I first thought that it was the hole tone scale, which we call augmented, too. But this stuff has a very modern sound, even the scale you presented first, is very interesting for modern jazz solo. And the lick is very good. Tkanks again!

Huh. Never heard anyone refer to the diminished scale as augmented. Aug is raised 5th, diminished flatted 5th. It's like referring to a major scale as minor. Who is we?

Thanks man, i'll get on that one and try to apply it. I managed to apply the whole tone one over altered chords (mainly because of that blues class i found of yours lol) but i've never learned this one. I was taught that the whole tone scale is the augmented scale >.< Perhaps there are several. I find that the Emaj7 to Cmaj7 progression is actually used quite a lot in music other than jazz/fusion so this will be useful to spice up solos over those chords. Thanks Tom!

Great guitar, probably the closest tone to a hollow body guitar i've heard without it actually being hollow. Quick question, is this actually an augmented scale lick? Or is it based on major7 arpeggios/chords whose roots are an augmented interval apart? I ask because I thought the augmented scale was the same as the whole-tone scale, and the lick includes those semitones between the maj7th and root intervals.

The 5th is raised, not lowered in an augmented chord. Each interval of an aug chord is a major 3rd apart.

Give Tom Quayle an amp with a metal guitar in front of a hundred thousand people and I can guarantee you that he would be the best guitarist in the world today. He can shred like crazy and he knows endless theory about harmony. Make a duet with Guthrie Govan and the stage will explode!
