Instead of cardboard I make stencils out of the sides of gallon milk or distilled water jugs. The water jugs work particularly well as they are thinner and more flexible. I use a drill for round holes or soldering iron for irregular shaped holes

it can really help smooth the edges out, since it can be difficult to cut curves without a little wonky flat edges here and there. especially inside curves!

as many as I own.. which is a lot i still use some home made ones on stuff. for me.. its worth buying some. When i started it seems i was spending a ton of money. I dont think i bought a texture stencil until i had been painting 3 plus years. (of course there were not nearly as easy access then either to good quality ones)

Ever use long leaf pine needles? Instead of that wheat stuff?

i cant say ive used pine needles. it could be interesting, but i can say the blackbeard wheat is very fine and somewhat flexible. But stiff enough to not blow around, much finer than pine needles. ive used broom bristles, lace, wire and a wide assortment of found things in the past. Paint brushes are pretty popular and somewhat common of use. Experiment and see what you come up with!

I know this video came out few weeks ago. I love your work, and was watching your sunset lake, is there any way you could make another video about that? There isn't very many videos about lakes, which is sad really. I have learned quite a lot from you. I do mix of mediums, and really want to incorporate more air brush work. I am going to watch and rewatch that video. I just figured you have much more to say about this topic. Thank you so much for your time and work. I Know you did not get as good as you are with out hours and hours of your time. The dyer sheet is brilliant, btw. I have practiced with that many times, along with strings, and had to improvise with taking bristles from a broom. it does the job.

Been a bit tied up of late. But I will get back to water again. I think first I’m about to adress tight curly hair. This upcoming week I’ll have some time to paint tutorial stuff I got one more commission to start then I should have some downtime. Thanks!

What about using a sewing machine with no cotton in it to make the holes, do you think that would work?

Maybe lay the card on some polystyrene foam and strike it with the bristles of a wire brush.

im sure you could.. honestly this doesnt take very long. of course ive made them with a stencil burner on mylar as well. The goal is to get people thinking. Ill still purchase stencils... if for no other reason than. once I pay for one i am less prone to losing it :) But the yupo ones will last a long time the paper ones will deteriorate.

@@parklanecartman2165 it could be interesting.. certainly easy, but i wouldnt spend time chasing after a sewing machine to find out.. now if I had one here maybe id give that a shot. the big concern would be lack of variation on hole size.
