Tony, I saw this video about a year and half ago and have been using Photoscape X ever since. The free version has all the editing features you need to make printable photos and it never expires. It hasn't been updated in a couple of years, but it's still very useful and way easier to use than any of the other free option. I recently upgraded to the pro version for a few extra features and as an amateur photographer, I believe this is all I will ever need.

Just have to send a HUGE thank you for this video and many others. As a hobbyist landscape/street photographer this is exactly what i needed. Great instruction, to the point and easy to understand. Also if you guys are ever in need of a driver/ tour guide for the central ca coast area let me know. I would be happy to tag along just to learn and pick up whatever tips i could.

Tony, thank you so much! For weeks I had fumbled around unsuccessfully with every imaginable tool to make a wire disappear. PhotoscapeX + RawTherapee were perfect. The wire "healed" out quickly and easily. Plus I added some interest to the blurred background. So easy and quick.

Thanks for the review Tony. About RawTherapee, don't forget to activate the tool if you see a "power button" in the tool's header ;) otherwise the slider might create an entry in the history but will not update the image. One more small tip for those tempted by this software : right click over a tool's header to expand it and collapse all the others, making things less intimidating. And you have different mean of doing color adjustments in so different tool, at some point you'll have your preferred ones.

Perfect, I downloaded one and it is very nice. I will have to learn it, but it is WAY better than the basic windows photos tools. LOL

Thanks Tony. PhotoscapeX gotta be the best damn quick edit for RAW photos I've seen and used. And really, a pretty good basic editor as well. Seriously, sometimes simple really is the best. If you get your pics done well in the camera, almost everything simple can be done very easily and very quick with Photoscape X. And UI is very user friendly (and fun). Again, thank you!

Hi Tony, two great programs and great to have them as extras to Photoshop (that I have been using for many years... it is my photographic friend). Amazing that such programs are free. Enjoyed Photoscape more even though I had to save editions... no big deal , just takes time and organisation. Rawtherapee is excellent but even for a Photoshop person like me I can't ever imagine using it all. However, thank you for the reviews and I am still enjoying your book. I Keep discovering stuff and rediscovering what I had forgotten. Keep up the good work. Thanks Rod

Thank you!! Installed both of them to play with, although Raw Therapee is definitely overkill for me at this time as I am just starting to play around with post editing. I would also like to thank you for all of your video's, they have been a huge help with my learning curve into the photography world. I wish I had taken the time to learn my camera much earlier, but hey, better late than never. This year's goal is to pick up some prime's and a decent zoom or two to compliment my 60d and get out there and take pictures with it instead of letting it collect dust.

I'm struggling to find a way to replace a background, or cut out a figure and place it onto a different background. It's pretty simple in the other photo editing programs I use, but I'm running in online circles trying to find the way to do it in Photoscape X. Maybe it can only be done with the $40 Pro version? I've been using RawTherapee for almost a year now. I wish I had tried this out earlier instead of just sticking to digiKam for so long (being a Linux user). It should be noted though that RawTherapee still doesn't seem to support local adjustments so I almost always use GIMP in conjunction with it.

It should also be noted that RT can export 16-bit png files and that the currently beta GIMP 2.9x (and the NIK filters, which can be activated from within GIMP) also work with 16-bit depth. Makes editing much more flexible.

Couldn't keep using the subscription, Thank you for the demonstration of PhotoScape X as I was really wanting to get away from Gimp for doing some of the more artistic edits that I use to do in Lightroom. Hi Tony in Photoscape X Pro you can save the changes you make in a photo. Instead of going to save go to the three dots to the right click on that then you will see save project. It saves file as a .psxprj project file. I think this is a great program has tons of features and capabilities other programs do not have. I use many other programs but find this one offering a lot of unique features.. I will always use it to do neat looking graphics.

I use Photoscape X the paid vetsion. It's a good program but the only feature I miss is to be able to have the option to ID the focus point on the image.

Being a Linux user, I have been using Raw Therapee for awhile. The one thing it really seems to be lacking is a clarity tool. I'd like to try Photoscape X but there is no Linux option for it. Others have mentioned Darktable but I can honestly say I am not a fan of it. Raw Therapee seems to be the best option for Linux as far as I'm concerned.

Hi Tony, I'll try to keep this fairly short, I am just starting out in DSLR with a Nikon D3300. I found your video extremely helpful and love your style. I am currently wading my way through your SDP book, so much info available, unbelievably low price, I had to give it 5 * on Amazon! The review of editing software was very helpful, esp. Photoscape, I have a very old version of Photoshop that I find cumbersome. Now to the question, I shall shortly be visiting Andalusia, Alhambra, Córdoba and Seville and would like to take photos that I can quickly share on social media, plus, spend some time on editing back home, adding some effects and compiling an album. Do you recommend switching from JPEG to RAW on the camera as I go along, choosing RAW + fine in the menu, or would the jpeg fine setting give me enough edit ability in Photoscape? I am also guessing that, inside historic buildings, aperture priority setting would be best. I will be on guided tours and I take your point that "take lots of shots and delete later" is the best strategy, however, I will probably have seconds rather than minutes to compose most shots. Thanks very much, keep up the good work, I don't know how you find the time! We beginners really appreciate it and I will certainly be spreading the word of your excellent book here in the U.K. Rick Bryant

I would love to see a RAWTherapee tutorial. What you need to know, want to know and optional stuff maybe. That would be great.

Hi Tony, re your comment on vignetting. Some of our photos have this effect but from the rubber collapsible hoods. Please consider doing a presentation on the use of various lens hoods and when they should be used. Thanks and regards, Joe

Tony, thanks for another great video. I installed Photoscape X but could not launch it. I was getting a LoadLibrary DLL error. This video provides the fix, showing you how to set your advanced power plan settings to Maximum Performance.

haven't tried out both yet, just Photoscape X. Marked improvement on some scanned slides from the 70s over the marginal Google Photo editing tools
