That is exactly what I do when I hear any mainstream news, look elsewhere for the real story.

Ok this might be my favourite Hickey sketch. There's nothing more reassuring for an Ulsterman than when free staters reject partitionism

Nothing beats "Ulster Loyalist" fairytales, where they pledge allegiance to "kings" and "queens" (who wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire). Love this channel.

1:32 was the funniest part! haha! It's true though, a lot of history written by the west or even some other countries are like fairy stories. I used to wonder how legends came about- but considering how distorted most history is, it's no surprise!

In the 1980s-1990s when there was a media barn on the IRA in the British media, on telly you could see Gerry Adams' lips moving but you couldn't hear what he was saying .

“But Da, don’t forget to mention the wunderfully kind a gentle Auxies when you mention the Black-and-Tans.” Brilliant stuff.

Don't know much about Ireland politics sadly. But it sounds familiar. The same thing everywhere they went.

As an NI born but transported to Oz at 10, at 40 I went back to live in my grandmother's home county of Mayo for a year, just five minutes from where she used to live, and it was a lovely place. When talking to our landlady about the North and the then recent Omagh disgrace she remarked that it was like another country you'd see on the TV or read about in the paper. Living there I found this to be true and though being close enough, we only visited the North once to buy some Belleek pottery before high tailing it back to Sligo and the psychological safety of Eire. Of note, I used to go to the Christian Brothers Primary School in Free Derry in the Bogside (ENGLAND'S version of Gaza) and in 1969 started the school year by climbing over the barricades erected during the Battle of the Bogside a couple of weeks earlier. At least there were no soldiers (who would later go on to shoot children going to school) in Free Derry in late 1969 where and when they were legitimate targets.

🤣 Your popularity has brought me your history of videos and I love this video. I have always hoped to visit Ireland and I’ve never wanted to visit more than I do now- and would love to catch your standup! I come from extended maternal and paternal families of grandmothers/great-aunts who would say “we’re Irish *Catholics*!” but never “we’re Canadian or Irish-Canadian” and a father was revolutionized into a socialist by his hero (great uncle Harold who was Protestant but for a united socialist Ireland). Yet still, growing up my parents never had reading material on Irish colonialism but I found one when visiting my dad & can’t wait for him to finish and pass it on! I have to find the book by Mr. Green pulled out by the son at the end of his fairytale reading. I do recall that my mom had a crush on Harrison Ford and allowed us to rent a VHS of the movie ‘The Devil’s Own’ without looking at the description & was enraged that it depicted Brad Pitt as a first lovely Irishman who stays with the Ford character’s family until they discover that he is a “terrorist”-satanic as implied by the title. I think he was on a mission to get guns, you know just like Benjamin Franklin went to France to liberate the white landholders of the emerging USA from British colonialism- not portrayed as satanic by the go-USA historical series on Franklin produced by Disney+ (Yes I know I need to cancel my subscription for BDS pressure campaign but I will when the $3/month 3-month trial is almost over).

For anyone new to the refference. 'And their tanks and their bombs. Zombie originally featured on The Cranberries' second album No Need To Argue in October 1994, but was issued as a single the month before. The lyrics begin: "Another head hangs lowly / Child is slowly taken / And the violence, caused such silence / Who are we mistaken?"

I don't know much about the IRA (am willing to be respectfully educated) but from the little I know, I've always doubted the narrative which to me seems to demonise them

Tadhg, I would like you to explain the whole Ireland war thing. It would be good to hear your personal story. It's one thing to read about it, but it always feels like the story has never been properly told.

As the UK is doing at the moment, NI will soon either end up as a sovereign state or as part of Ireland… (fingers crossed)

It seems to be likely, not through war but peace. Since the Irish people, from what I know, no longer are divided.

Who are the Black n Tans?
@josephinemonahan915
@josephinemonahan915 7 ай бұрын
The Black and Tans were a group of ne’er do wells foisted on Ireland...at the end of the Great War, the English needed to send more ”soldiers” to Ireland...they were in short supply because of the war...same with the uniforms....so black (half a policeman’s) and tan (half a soldier’s uniform)...and some say they let prisoners out to contribute to the thuggery....they were short of bodies to do their dirty work.

Oh Tadhg, I have so much respect for you in many ways. Love your humour, and love a lot of your Israel/Palestine stuff. But, I'm afraid I take a bit of issue with this. There is a big difference between the struggle of 1920 and the Provisional IRA of the troubles. I'm actually a very committed pacifist, so I condemn all violence. But, honestly, the IRA during the troubles did some utterly evil things. As did their loyalist counterparts. Terrorists all. The Enniskillen bomb, Joan McConville to name two.

If one defends the actions of the folks in the Easter Rising, should they also not logically support the IRA? That question's been bugging me lately.
