Wouldn't it make more sense for countries to focus on building a well-rounded highly skilled population that can specialise in multiple fields so they don't have to depend on other countries for products and services?

A bit of your logic is flawed. You state free trade isn't natural because people had to work to remove obstacles in order to achieve free trade. These obstacles, however, are artificially created upon false premises and paranoia. If we exam smaller systems, even on the community level, trade exists, naturally too. So the fact that imaginary lines on map and the masters thereof hinder trade does not mean it isn't natural. Therefore they are unnatural, not free trade.

+Kunschner Great point. This was Orwell's lesson, not to term words in Simple English to mean something so far removed from the original meaning that it would mean the opposite. Free trade has become a node for discussion, and what they focus on then is "Free Trade Zones", which are basically a way for Western nations to exploit workers and get their goods into the country cheaper, and sometimes without running them through customs, because they are used in manufacturing at the same spot, which then are put through customs. On your point, national borders today are the result of a long time, a lot of conflict, a lot of migration back and fro, and there's also a lot of natural borders. not to say things don't change, of course. They change all the time too.

Good stuff but it would be a bit better if it differentiated between so-called "free trade" and what practically all FT agreements are "managed-trade" agreements. Perhaps better articulation that true free trade is a perfectly natural state of affairs. However, because prevailing mercantilist mindsets typically have interrupted that natural state for so long, removing the barriers may have become thought of as "building".

educational. thanks. i like things explained simply. i don't feel the need to know all the intricacies of the economic system. i don't believe it will ever balance itself out because it is based on the old system of rulers and the ruled. this trade and reciprocity you talk about isn't for the everyday person. it is for the rich to gain and the workers to buy. there is no way that every person in the world will create a business to enjoy this free trade. most people will work to create these products and buy them. this economic system will never work. this free trade is simply removing obstacles for the rich to get richer. a world economy will never work either. but if we simply want to destroy the world then lets do it. WOOOOHOOOO.

No, free trade is basically having the right to do whatever you want when it comes to trade. Making more wealth can be a by product since nothing is stopping you from for instance to gain 1 trillions dollars through slavery if you want to. "Free trade" can limit someone's wealth due to competition, having the freedom to shyster people out of their wealth which is also a high demand besides slavery, and a conflict of interests. "a world economy will never work either." Yes it can and saying otherwise is one factor helping certain rich people to get richer and control the market.

Free trade means that a worker will be able to buy things cheaper than before. It would mean that on a global level resources are used to maximize production. No need to have under-producing farms to feed the people in one part of the world when you can import food and allocate resources in producing what is best produced in that part of the world.
@Tetzukai
@Tetzukai 9 жыл бұрын
i11011011001 No, that's the market based on demand and the demand is cheaper stuff. Free trade itself doesn't always entail cheaper services, it's just not segregated trade.
@i11011011001
@i11011011001 9 жыл бұрын
Why else would you import stuff, if you can make them in your country, if not for the imported being cheaper? If you can not make them in your country there is no reason for import taxes (other than bureaucracy)

You have that backwards. Free trade is the natural state and tariffs and other barriers are what was erected. A move to freer trade is tearing down those barriers not building something.

Yah, I am 100% in favor of a completely free market capitalist economy and completely free trade. My only issue with free trade deals, however, is that they (by definition) have government involvement. I don't want free trade deals. I want our country to simply remove all of our barriers to free trade with every other country. My view is simple: "Government, stay out of our economy." Remove all tarrifs and remove all regulations. Let the people interact economically with one another as they see fit, without government interference in our lives.

Mmm, I see the vision but there's always a price to pay for lack of regulation! Always ok to set "healthy boundaries"
@johnc1014
@johnc1014 12 күн бұрын
@@atuhairemarilyn8982 So, a free market is regulated by supply and demand. There are all sorts of pressures that balance out to produce the most effective overall outcomes. The government, meanwhile, ought to have zero economic regulations. Actually, the role of the government here is to protect against basic crimes that infringe on others. You can't do things like steal or commit fraud. If you do, then yes, the government should stop you via law enforcement and a justice system. See, people all seek after their own best interest. But, they are limited by the interests of others. Businesses want profit, but can't charge outrageous prices or no one would buy from them in the first place. Workers want the highest wages, but a business will only pay what their labor is worth. Likewise, businesses want cheap labor, but too low wages will result in no one working for you.

Isn't there a natural connection between the degree to which true free trade can be practised and the convertibility of the currencies used by the countries engaging in the trade. In particular doesn't a country which uses a fiat currency like the US dollar have a perpetual advantage over another country which does not with which is trading ? The country with fiat currency can simply print as much of it as found necessary to maintain it's advantage in absolute terms and the fictionalised concept of a national debt for that currency has no theoretical limits.

I think that if a currency is abused then eventually it will fall to it's true value (zero)
