My understanding is that the lack of symmetrical speed plans (or just higher upload speeds on plans in general) in Australia is largely to try and segregate the higher speeds to business and enterprise tier plans only. It's a bit strange in the current age to think "Need more than 50mbps upload? You must be a business". In addition to this, NBNco's wholesale costs per mbit are pretty high so even if we did have a symmetrical offering for residential use, it'd probably be so expensive that ISPs/RSPs wouldn't consider it viable as an offering.

If you want higher upload you can go on 1000/400 FTTP or if you want symmetrical then I encourage you to enquire about enterprise ethernet which is a dedicated fibre line to your premise.

Some other ISPs offer plans with greater upload speeds. We've got our install booked for this coming Monday (24/4) and have decided to go with Launtel specifically for their 500/200 plan as I WFH and have kids gaming, wife uploading her photography, devices streaming, CCTV recording to cloud, etc. 50 up is laughable in this day and age.
@GivesAMinute
@GivesAMinute Жыл бұрын
I recon I will have to swap ISP's. Aussie Broadband gets a good wrap due to their CCV, but yeah if they are only going to offer 50 up then I will change pretty quickly.

@@GivesAMinute Won't regret Launtel - good plans, daily charging (so you can change plans whenever you want via the portal), and if you have trouble, call them up and you get straight through to someone technical that knows what they are doing!

Hey mate. sparky/nbn contractor here I highly recommend you run CAT6 cable or get a ACMA registered cabler to do it for you. CAT5 is not installed anymore these days and is practically rubbish. CAT6 is not expensive at all. might even be worth picking up a drum from an electrical wholesaler or bunnings. Glad you have fibre up and running. another option you have, is to put your router alongside your NTD and run multiple cat6 cables, then install unifi u6 lites around the house, you will get better performance.
@GivesAMinute
@GivesAMinute Жыл бұрын
Thanks Penguin :) I have since discovered that the cable I ran from the NTD was in fact Cat 6a! I tested this by plugging direct into my laptop, 1000 down and 50 up. Turns out the bottle neck was in the Netgear d7000v2. From everyone I spoke to that modem is NOT recommended to play nicely with FTTP so I am going to upgrade it. :)

Mate, similar experience as you. Aussie BB, FTTP installed yesterday. No 1. Outdoor connection to premise is actually unlawfully installed near meter box and solar inverter. No 2. Installer would not install the connection box in my MEP. Instead he installed at the end of the house in kids bedroom! He said he couldn’t install in MEP cuz he’d have to remove colourbond roof which they’re not aloud to…. There’s no need to! Also didn’t give me the option for battery backup. Not impressed with NBNCo one bit.
@GivesAMinute
@GivesAMinute Жыл бұрын
From what I understand the wall closest to the entry point from the street is the default location for the NTD, any placement outside of this you need to pay the cost to run further (hence cat 5 in my case). Battery backup is interesting. I thought that was only for certain cases, but are you suggesting you can request it and be granted?
@StephenConners
@StephenConners Жыл бұрын
@@GivesAMinute from what i read, they’re supposed to install it where you request. If you have services which require battery backup, then yeah you have the option. We have a security system which dials out in the event of a breakin.

@penguin4597 Жыл бұрын
Hey mate. No 1. - what is the distance, generally, we can installed your pcd near switchboards as long as it is a distance away no 2. NBN can only install your NTD 1.8 metres (correct me if I'm wrong) from your PCD, if you want it further, contact a ACMA registered cabler to relocate it. no 3. I have no seen a backup battery installed for a long time. but just get a UPS?
@kabiskzor
@kabiskzor Жыл бұрын
@@GivesAMinute Can always just use a cheap UPS.. I upgraded my pc recently i7 13700k, 4070ti ddr5 etc and it uses a bit more power than my last one so the UPS i had was no longer viable for this rig. Instead I plugged the NTD and router into it. Gives me about 2 hours of battery in case of an outage. Now I need to buy a higher powered UPS for my PC :) If you can get one for free or cheaper from NBN thats even better :)

@@GivesAMinute Depends what the ISP has allocated to the CVC you're going through. My local one is 2 Gbit, but only ever gets utilized up to about 60%, so there's plenty of spare capacity and my speed stays nice and high. Also, if you're testing it via wifi to the router, then wifi bandwidth will vary depending on which version / how far away you are. My desktop is the other side of the house, so I only get around 400Gbit, but closer to the router I get 600Gbit.
@kabiskzor
@kabiskzor Жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert but I think the better option might be to run a mesh router network so you have good wifi all throughout the house and running a short cable from your NTD to your router in the garage and running cat 6 or E cables over the distance to your PC . I do pretty much the same thing though without the mesh network as my devices are mostly Wifi6 anyway and get decent reception even at other side of the house. But I get around 940mbps down and 47mbps up with 2ms ping on the main pc connected to cat6 . Atleast on offpeak. Drops to around 850/40mbs during peak. And yes i completely agree this lame 1gb down 50up is completely stupid in todays internet world. I have a security camera system thats constantly uploading to the cloud. The same goes for my phone etc Download is still more important to me but upload is gradually becoming more demanding on my connection as well as technology and my devices evolve. They are just saving high upload for business plans to more insentive to choose those plans and charge higher.
@GivesAMinute

Definitely do not want to be streaming off of wifi (mesh network or not). For live streaming the only fail safe is hardwired in!!
@kabiskzor
@kabiskzor Жыл бұрын
@@GivesAMinute For sure thats why i said to run the e cable or cat 6 to your main pc or streaming set up. And leave the router in the garage. Though as long as you have a good signal and wifi 6 you would be perfectly fine to stream of the wifi. Fixed line is definitely better though. Im on the otherside of my house though 3 walls and inside a room made out of steel refrigeration panels and my gaming pc while connected to wifi 6 gets almost full speed and only loses 1ms ping from the router with the pc's antenna. It's pretty solid. But i have cat 6 cable connected to it anyway. Can use the PC's wifi for hot spot though. Comes in handy for my other devices in that room. But a mesh network would be better for those devices as well. I just suggested the mesh network for regular wifi devices through out the house. I thought that was the reason you had your router in the middle of the house.

What a load of bull! Down right lie switching from NBN cable to NBNF would allow you to jump to speeds of up to 1Gbps. You're existing speed cannot be increased beyond what is currently available through your existing cable NBN in your area! In essence you're switching from your own port in a multi port DSLAM to a shared 300 or more subscribers multiplexed on a single fibre connected to a single port in a multi port DSLAM. Oh yeah! just takes one of the 300 or so subscriber's equipment to screw everyone else's internet connection! For the ignorant, don't be confused with speed known as bandwidth calculated in megabits per second (Mbps) and data down load limits usually in Gbs
