Free Weights or Machines, which is better? In most cases free weights are superior a superior muscle and strength builders but there are cases where machines have an advantage. In this video Sal and Adam discuss the pros and cons of both.

I say do what makes you happy. By the end of the day, it's good that you're doing some kind of resistance training, no matter what kind it is.

Use what gives you the best results based on your goals and circumstances. I myself do mostly bodyweight. Love it.

I would recommend using machine weights only for safety reasons. You can always add body weight exercises to your routine like pushups, dips or pullups

For me upper body is almost all free weights (I use a chest press and that’s it) because a lot of them aren’t made in a way that allow for enough freedom of movement but some machines are really good For legs it more machines than upper because there is so much of a stability demand that it makes it harder to push to the maximum You can push your quads closer to failure on the hack squat than a back or front squat

The fact that you add in body weight along with machine workouts definitely evens everything out so it makes sense your free weight and machine workout match. I like to us body weight for finnishing after free weights and isolation machines. I’ll also use BW when I’m away from the gym on my days off with some cardio. At the end of the day what matters is we get results and don’t injure ourselves.

Informative video. I beg the question on one point. This is based on the old saying, nobody gets out of here alive. As a 40- something who is dealing with a persistent chest injury, everybody fits into that rehab category at some point.

Dorian as a pro used probably more machines than free weights. Especially leg training when he ditched squats, felt lunges were useless.

I’m 45 and just getting started. I’m using machines to work my way up to free weights. Free weights in a gym, in front of everyone is a bit intimidating.

I do a lot of machines basically, because it helps with technique and form, to avoid injuries, also is a faster training for someone in a hurry. But Everey couple of weeks I mixed in one week where I do only free weights to shock the muscle

I do the big 4 lifts first and later shift to the machines for the accessory movements. Is that a good strategy ?

After is better. If u do it before. You'll have less energy for ur sets

I've have injuries so I use hammer strength isolateral machines

Machine weights are your better option because it's less risk of injury and all you have to do is move a pen to adjust the weight

Weighted Calisthenics is the answer...dips, pullups etc etc

They basically just argued that you shouldn’t pay for gyms haha. You could just put a dumbbell rack in you house and do body weight exercise. Gym membership fees are primarily for the machines which most cannot fit in most peoples houses. As for machines, they are safer especially as you get older AND as long as you make sure to do most if not all of the circuit to hit all the muscle groups you need your fine. I do agree on the one size fits all machine thing though.

I think average people choose the machine like at golds gym is there's mainly huge dudes working out over in the free weight section . That can be a little intimidating just dont want to feel so small when your next to these monsters lol 😆

My guess is free weights is good to use if you trying to be explosive. Because there is no fear of dropping the weights.

I don't buy into the whole stabilizer muscle myth. All muscles work to stabilize your body depending on the exercise your doing. I used free weights for years. Switched to machines as I got older. Easier on the joints but I still usually go to failure. No spotter needed either.

I'm just getting back into working out I use to workout in prison for 3 years straight I got out and haven't worked out in several years I think machines are great for beginners and for ppl that dont have a spotter long as you working out It shouldn't matter

The whole "more calories burned using free weights" is completely a non issue. You don't really burn that many calories lifting weights. A person might burn around 300 calories from lifting weights on a machine. And most likely would only burn 50 more using free weights. Now my numbers are not exact, but google calories burned lifting weights and you'll see it's surprisingly low.

If you’re new to working out been out for more than a couple months, or rehabbing, definitely machines to get the muscles started. After a couple months or your muscles are back in shape gradually add free weights. Then use both as long as you are achieving results. Keep in mind your weight on free weights will be considerably less than machines; until your accessory muscles catch up.

Not really I love machine weights and my bench press is the same with free weights, but I do pushups and pullups as well because I like picking up my bodyweight
