Members of the original, pre-crash Lynyrd Skynyrd band, Bob Burns, Artimus Pyle, Leslie Hawkins & Jojo Billingsley perform Freebird with the Saturday Night Special Band in Statesboro Georgia in 2005. Audio is from the camera mic & the sound guy overloads the system during the solo causing the electricity to go out.

This had to have been recorded maybe 20 years ago. What a spot on rendition. Obviously no one can sing like RVZ but the band was smokin. And ol lefty with that Firebird played the solo flawlessly.

You're thinking of Artimus Pyle. And if I remember right, the charge was related to a nasty divorce. That kind of accusation has happened to a lot of men (one of my friends included).

Kathy Collins DID NOT sing this song. She didn't write it. She is credited with saying to Allen, "If I leave/left here tomorrow, will/would you remember me? It sounds like Kathy was possibly not happy with Allen. Anyway, Allen brought that lyric, Kathy's words, and Allen and Ronnie wrote the first short version of the band. Later the song got longer. Anyway, this is the accurate version of what you said above.

Thanks Mark. You definitely deserve some credit here, this band was something special & it wouldn't have happened without you. Aside from the names on the marquee, the rest of the guys, including yourself are all great musicians. I'm pretty sure the 100's of thousands of people that've seen you guys now, would agree that the band who currently calls themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd doesn't sound near as good as this band did.

@@edwardhenry3158 , Doubt that very seriously if your band wasn't around in 1975. "Southern Punch" Pensacola Florida was doing an almost totally exclusive Lynyrd Skynyrd set from 1975-1979. This was the first show we did with ED, so by the time we got to Freebird, he didn't have the energy to play it, understandable since he was already suffering from a heart condition and he hadn't played a full show in years. However, there are several videos of this show as well as about 8 others on KZfaq

Yes, he absolutely was - he just sat our Freebird because he was overheating and we were worried about his heart which was starting to fail even back in 2005. There are other videos online that CLEARLY shows Ed playing at this show, especially the Official Bootleg thats floating around KZfaq. This show is in the compilation of this video - enjoy - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdOTibKItdO8l2g.html

Artimus Pyle wakes up in the morning talking to himself he is so affixed on attention. He claimed he was the real drummer of Skynyrd, facts are Ronnie hired him as a temp and not as a band member but as a hired musician. He was almost fired when he tried to put his own twist on already recorded songs instead of playing them as Burns did. Gary and Allen tolerated him but really didn't care for him much. Many people ask why he was not the drummer when the band reformed after the tribute tour. One reason was Gary was the driving force of Skynyrd reforming, despite Judy or anyone else's rejections, and he did not care for Pyle. Another thing was Pyle was accused and found guilty of being a sex offender, wouldn't register and it was publicizing him as the drummer of Skynyrd. The rumor is that the band paid him out of it to shut everything up but told him to stop calling himself their drummer and to leave them alone about the whole thing. He later made a movie representing the plane crash as himself being the hero, and Ronnies best friend. It was far from the truth. The movie shows Ronnie walking around the plane shaking everyone's hand when he was actually asleep on sleeping pills. Gene Odom tried putting him in a seat and buckling him up but said he thinks he unbuckled because he didn't know what was going on. Odom also said anything in the movie was not about the plane crash, but about Pyle himself, and I agree. I have watched every interview from Skynyrd I can find, and to me Pyle is bat shit crazy, and loves attention....

I’ve seen the 1976 and 1977 videos of the Skynryd band playing in England and Oakland and Artemis Pyle was one hell of a great drummer and brought a lot to the sound. He’s a big part of the band regardless of who some say hated him.

Artimus was in the band after the tribute tour. He played on their first post-crash album, 1991 and part of The Last Rebel. He also would have been in the Rossington-Collins Band if not for a motorcycle accident.
