Heaven's Vault is a 3D, open world, point & click narrative adventure. It's a game with an emphasis on player choice and player freedom - but in a non-systemic game where all the content is pre-written, how does Heaven's Vault allow the player to choose their own directions while still creating an engaging narrative. How does Heaven's Vault tell a great story with freedom?
"An archaeologist uncovers a lost history in an ancient space Nebula. Award-winning narrative adventure game with hieroglyphic language puzzles, from the creators of 80 DAYS." - Steam description for Heaven's Vault

Hey, thanks for watching! Heaven’s Vault is a superb game and one I highly recommend playing. All footage in this video is from the first ~2 hours of the game and should avoid any “spoilers”. The technical details come from GDC talks by John Ingold and Joseph Humphrey (that are well worth watching if you want to hear more about this game’s narrative design) in addition to a couple of interviews. This video was originally going to cover more aspects of Heaven’s Vault but I decided it made more sense to split it up, so there will be a second video on Heaven’s Vault out soon that focuses on the design of the game’s thematic puzzles. Thanks again for watching!

Do you have a link to he GDC talks? I can't find the correct one that has the same footage as shown at the very start of the video. Thanks!

Brilliant video! Subscribed :) I'm doing research for my thesis on storytelling methods in non-linear video games and this looks like a fantastic game to use as an example.

Thank you! I'd look into the EGX/GDC talks by Jon Ingold (if you haven't already seen them). He's the founder(?) of Inkle and is an excellent voice on video game narratives

I think you'll really like it! The story is excellent and the language puzzles are super engaging too. Are you still trying to limit how many games you buy this year?

I just finished my own playthrough of Heaven's Vault and was happy to find your video explaining how the systems of this game worked!! My game ended up ending suddenly and it wasn't completely satisfying, but still good. So I became curious on how the game worked and if I could have a different story in a new game plus. Your explanation really cleared things up for me!

I felt the end was a little sudden the first time I played as well! But on replaying I felt it fit the game for better, there is so much you can see on a second playthrough that I didn't see the first time! (The entire moon of Renaki for example haha) Glad you liked the video!

Thank you for this recommendation. I will Play this Game shortly. I think of what you are saying it fits wonderfully into my taste in Games. Your recommendations are generally great. What separates them from most are that you really seem to Care and prioterize games whose are doing innovative things off the General meta. Looking forwards for more of your recommendations :) I'd now recommed Griftlands and Tunic whose I lately played. One a Story-Driven Deck Builder and The other a Soulslike Zelda'ish Game with It's very own Twists. Also in Terms of language like it seems to be the case in Heaven's Vault.

Great insight into the game that I tested for Inkle. 😎👍 One issue with the video though: the subtitles are rather broken; getting stuck, showing titles which don’t match the audio at all, etc.

Thank you, very cool to hear that from someone who was involved in the game! And thanks for the heads up about the subtitles.. I uploaded the wrong file and then never checked it was actually working haha. Fixed it now.

Great video. To be perfectly honnest, early in the game I found myself wondering what I was supposed to do, but this is more because the game is so peculiar. Once I got the hang of it, it was a great adventure.

Can you do a video on Atomic Structure?
@Table53
@Table53 Жыл бұрын
Hey, I must have missed this comment before! I don't think it's likely that I'll make a video on the atomic structure - it's not widely used in many games (Heaven's Vault and Fallen London(?)) are the only two I can think of, and I'm not sure how much more depth I can add to what I described in this video!
