(reupload because the other one had like 2 seconds chopped off of it at the start and it was REALLY jarring)
hoooooooooooooofah I finally did it. I made good on the threat that I'd turn my heated ramblings about Freedom Planet into a video series.
I love this franchise and its kickass characters, but man after the sequel I just couldn't stop thinking about so much stuff and what could have done (and what nearly WAS done) that really could have said some poignant shit.
So what else could I do but start a video series about it. It's been a long time since I messed with editing and I figured I might as well get my creative juices flowing.
Enjoy, and I implore you give these games a go if you like action platformers.
Also yeah I know there's a lot to take in, don't be afraid to pause and read.

The first game very much feels exactly like a teenager writing a Sonic fanfic game and then halfway through development it became an original property and they had to fill in a load of worldbuilding. Which.... is precisely what actually happened so.

As a Sonic fan Freedom Planet 1s got the same brand of cheese corn as Sonic tends to on both ends of "weirdly dark and kinda fucked up" to "goofy but awesome character action scenes" which is is probably why I like it so much despite the many flaws it clearly has. I always described the first game as reminding me of old sprite/flash animations of the early 2000s but in the best way. Amaturish with some jank but a ton of charm and heart to it that shows the creators genuinely loved it. From what ive heard the writers actually were thinking of cutting the Lilac torture scene but Dawn wanted it in because she nailed the scream so theres that. Shes right she did nail it lol. I also connected a few things about stuff such as Milla and Serps boss fights and the Magisters attitude to things that get revealed in the sequal but ill save that for when that video gets released. Good video!

Turns out there was supposed to be a level in between the torture scene and the scene in the Palace where they heal her where you have to escape the base. Basically confirmed by the dev after she watched this video because the story was written with a massive scope in mind that the actual game doesn't have due to time restraints... which also explains why the second game is so big.

Hello, a Freedom Planet Lore fan here, great video. I love the plot of Freedom Planet 1 and 2 despite the obvious flaws and missed oportunitys it had (Which personally, I think many exageret the flaws that it has). I want to point out some things that you missed, and clarify things about the plot of this game. 1. It is implied in the game by the magister during the part where he sents Lilac to Pangu Lagoon to investigate, that Arktivus (Motherfucking) Brevon, has probably visited Avalice before. Quote: "This could provide the answers we seek... Why the invaders know of our world, and more importantly, how to defeat them". This is also support by the fact that Syntax is basically a robot from the dragons that was stolen by Brevon (Or should i say, multiple robots, because in the cutscene were Lilac is tortured, you can see 3 Syntax heads in the background). However, something interesting to mention, was that it seems that Brevon didn't know about the Kingdom Stone, or the 3 kingdoms despite having visited Avalice before (After all, he brainwashed Dail to use is machines to extract energy from the planet to power up the Dreadnought, and when he sees that it doesnt's work, he discovers the existence of the Kingdom Stone and decides to use it to escape Avalice). I personally have the theory, that Brevon never visited Avalice in the first place, and that is just a theory that the magister has. What I think it actually happened (Warning, entering into Freedom Planet 2 territory), was that Brevon assaulted the Bakunawa and stole many of the technology of the dragons. And the attack that Brevon caused, ended up in the Bakunawa crashing in Avalice and leaving the dragons stranded in the planet. I know is a bit of a strech, giving that the Bakunawa crashing into Avalice happened like a 100 years ago, but right know, I think is the most logical and interesting explanation I could think of. 2. While its true that it is never explained in the game why Lilac and Carol decided to abandon the Red Scarves, it is heavily implied, that they decided to abandon the Red Scarves when Spade killed someone during a fight. This is implied in 2 scenes. The first one is when Lilac and Carol found Spade stealing the Kingdom Stone. After Spade refers to Lilac and Carol as traitors from abandoning the Red Scarves, Carol says this. Quote: "I'd rather be called a traitor than a murderer". The second time is during Carol's story mode, in the cutscene were they are going to Shang Tu after the events of Sky Battalion. Quote: "He was cool at first (Referring to Spade), but, uh... things got weird. Well, there's... there's line we don't cross. And he crossed 'em". Aside of doing thievery stuff, the Red Scarves also makes ilegal tournaments with bets. This is explained by Carol in the same cutscene mentioned before. Quote: "Yeah, We were part of a street gang called the Red Scarves. We used to make crazy money from martial arts tournaments". So basically what happened, was that Spade killed someone during a fight, Lilac and Carol decided to abandon the Red Scarves and using the money they gained during the multiple tournaments they participated in, they build a treehouse were they can live. 3. Much like good old Dr. Eggman, Brevon uses innocent creatures to power up his army. Everytime you destroy one of Brevons robots (Aside from Syntax), you can see some kind of fly flying away. Those flys are the living beings that give power to his robots. You can actually see some of them in giant glass containers with the green substance that Brevon uses in the backgroud in some parts of the level Final Dreadnought Round 2. You can also see that in Freedom Planet 2 in the level Shade Armory. 4. The cutscene were a group of soldiers go into Brevon's base (Shuigang's palace) and try to defeat him, is (In my opinion) one of the weirdest things in the entire plot. How did they find out that Brevon was the one causing all of this? Where they came from? they dosen't seem to be from Shang Tu, Shang Mu or Shuigang. Why the name is in question marks? Instead of putting something like, soldier or warrior, they put question marks, implying that is more important that it seems. Maybe i am looking to much into this, but this scene, always felt weird to me. Is like it was part of a sub plot that ended up getting cut or something. 5. The blue things that Lilac has in the head are actually earphones because Lilac is deaf. 6. In the palace of Shang Tu, there is an arrow dug in one of the pillars. The first time I saw that, I thought it was just a joke. You know, like they have tried to kill the magister or something and they failed the shot, dugging the arrow into the pillar. However, when I started Freedom Planet 2 and I saw the arrow again, that was the moment were I know it has to be important. And I was right! You see, there is an unused dialogue in Freedom Planet 2 that actually explains the origin of that arrow. I don't want to go into details in this video, because this is about Freedom Planet 1 and not 2 but i am so mad that they ended up cutting that dialogue, because it give Merga (The main antagonist of the second game) a bigger reason to do the things that she does. Despite being a cut dialogue, i am pretty sure that what they mention in that dialogue, is still canon (At least for now). 7. I want to mention something that it is not mention in the video. And it is the fact that Brevon manages to survive is battle against Team Lilac, and escapes using the Absolution before the Dreadnought explodes. Because of this, Torque goes after him to try to stop him. Belive it or not, there are some fans who think that Brevon dies at the end of Freedom Planet 1 (Warning, entering into Freedom Planet 2 territory). I remember watching some playthroughs of Freedom Planet 2 and when Serpentine mentions that Lord Brevon will eventually come back to Avalice, some people were like, "Oh yeah, Serpentine doesn't know that Brevon is dead". So that is why I wanted to explain this. 8. What the hell is that freacking shard that Brevon looks sometimes?! Seriously! There are some moments in the cutscenes of the game, where you can see Brevon looking at some kind of shard in a glass container, and then inmedietly hidding it away, as it was something really important. If i remember correctly, this happens in 2 cutscenes in the game. The first one, is when Brevon is informed by Syntax that the Kingdom Stone has been moved to Shang Mu. The second one, is when he tortures Lilac. I have no idea what in hell is that thing, but I am really interested to know about it. I love how much detail and lore this platform games have and how it leaves some thing for interpretation and theorys. So yeah, that will be all I have to say. Really interested to see your opinion in the plot of Freedom Planet 2.

@@venade9997 There was an unused dialog in Freedom Planet 2 that explains what happened when Merga and Cordelia, went to the palace of Shang Tu to negociate a peace treaty. Turns out, it was a set up, a trap set by the magister at that time (aka Cordelia's father) to win the conflict against the water dragons once and for all. When Merga and Cordelia arrived at the palace, an archer that was outside of the palace, shots an arrow to Cordelia, penetrating his heart and killing her. The magister screams that this was a trap set by the water dragons to kill his daughter and orders to use the power of the Kingdom Stone, to trap Merga in an ice prison and throwing her into the ocean. While it is not explained why the arrow is stuck into the pilar, i am pretty sure that the magister stuck the arrow there, to symbolize his victory against the water dragons. As I said, i am so mad that this was ended up getting cut. It give Merga a lot more excuse to be so pissed of to the earth dragons and the entire world in general.

Great video. It's cool to see someone elaborate on what I think is an underrespected part of the series. My thing is a lot of people who say negative things about these games' stories, it's clear they never intended to care in the first place. They went in not caring or wanting to care and that means it's bad. Between seeing your work on Twitter and this video, you clearly like the series and gave the whole thing thorough attention and actually acknowledge the cool things about it as well as what could be improved about it. That's all I ever wanted. No surface level nitpicks, no bad-faith arguments. Genuine critique done by someone with genuine love for the franchise, which acknowledges the appeals on top of the weak points. I look forward to your FP2 video, but I admit that, as a story that resonated with me a lot in spite of its flaws, I hope you'll be fairly kind to it - I can't help but notice you use the word "potential" a lot when complimenting the narratives of both games - and that makes sense, given it IS a retrospective - I personally would just be careful with focusing so much on "what you /could/ do" with the story that you devalue what is already there and ask at face if it does well or not. Though considering how even you were in this vid, combining passion and praise with earnest critique, I'm not that worried no matter what you have to say really. Can't wait.

I have so many fond memories of this game, being a fan of traditional side scrollers. The original Freedom Planet is still a fine game after all these years, perfect difficulty curve and variety in play styles keep every session unique. I have always preferred Milla in the original game, which is why I'm more than pleased that she's the best character in the second game. Milla being the original game's hard mode and having Milla become more developed physically in the sequel felt like a natural progression; she's now equal to Lilac and Carol.

Honestly and truly, I thought this was an excellent retrospective that clearly came from the heart. I certainly agree with the vast majority of your points; I definitely preferred Carol to Lilac in this one due to the latter's martyr complex, and I'm genuinely saddened that Dail was glossed over for DLC that never came instead of showing him having to restore his honor and become a genuinely good ruler after his stint as a brainwashed warmonger. I look forward you your inevitable ramblings on the sequel, however long that takes to publish!

Honestly though? I 'really' like the edge of the first game, tonal whiplash and all. It makes Freedom Planet stand out in an time where devs of these sort of games are too afraid to step outside of a set comfortable boundry zone. One of the first things that you see is the main bad guy casually decapping someone, and it really stamps it right there that this isn't going to be a cutesy, 'everyone's having fun' sort've adventure and that 'really' got me hooked into the first game, and now the series. Having that 'edge' that characters can and/or will get iced or damaged really adds fangs to both the setting and the antagonists, and it gives a significant amount of depth to it all, and I think really that's why Freedom Planet and the setting of Avalice are so special. FP2 really suffers from not having that same sorta edge to it because of this anti-edge critique, and because of that refusal to step outside of that set 'comfort zone' it really has its own tonal whiplash problems for the story it's telling, but in the opposite direction, where it outright refuses to allow any of it's cast of characters come ot any sort of harm 'at all' despite situations where they 'really' should do.

Oh yeah I absolutely agree. Like I said I'm not bad on the idea that it gets edgy or whatever, it's just there's nothing to it, like it doesn't effect them in any meaningful way, so it just feels like immature first time teen writing in a franchise trying to have any emotional hook at all. Coupled with the fact that they didn't have any intentions to really USE that experience in the sequel, it just comes off kinda weird and "oh okay so there are no consequences to anything, fair enough".

My least favorite aspect of the game? Parts of the writing. I agree that the writing of Lilac is infuriating, that's why I appreciate the possibility of playing the story through all 3 girls. I prefer taking Carol as a kinda immature but always loyal protagonist, and Lilac as her counterpart that is too heropants for her own and her friends good. I would have been great to have another co-op battle during the final boss to actually show their character developments. Everything else is on AMAZING, from the fitting music, to the nostalgic art direction, to the fast gameplay and even the "rough first time voice acting" shows a lot of dedication.

Honestly Freedom Planet 1 had an enjoyable story, but not a great one: a good backdrop for the gameplay that feels like it had the potential for more. On its strong suits it does a great job at playing up Brevon as a real threat with various defeats; there's real tension and anticipation when you go to fight him. I agree that there's a huge whiplash in the tone of the game, and that it's odd that Milla is just fine after the horrific boss fight, but I think it does some things well even if it could have been handled better. We see the girls in a pretty happy starting state, at least when Milla makes new friends, with the stakes of the story and danger ramping up until it goes from fun for Carol to concerning and scary. FP2 has a similar ramp-up without the edge where we feel more invested as the characters get more desperate. Both games also do a good job of developing the characters' personalities without a lot of screen time where we can see them in different emotional states, so we can easily imagine how they'd act in different situations. In terms of worldbuilding and developing the characters I think both could be better, and FP1 may have been careless in some of its edge, but they absolutely succeed in getting us invested. It's always interesting to hear someone who cares talk about how they'd improve the story.

Yes move on of expanding Dail-Spade and any additional campaigns. Plans scrapped and with respect devs want to focus any current-future projects. Edge is about consequences in respect to level of violence allowed your story (or game). I think JoJo Parts 1-3 where subtle gore or near fatal violence holds great consequences, but Part 4 when healing becomes an ability, you can up the risk factor like the infamous level of gore portrayed with Rat. FP1 while played bunch and moved to FP2, holds a special place paving the way and you definitely tell the devs had a blast from sonic fangames to their own casting and world - wrapped neat with tight movement.

Slight spoilers for one of my proposed talking points of FP2, but I am under no pretence that the writers could have made a story that actually said something more poignant and less wishy-washy had they committed to designing the game's story mode around giving specific stages to specific characters. This means that they didn't have to smash the story beats together to cater for four different characters ultimately ending up in the same scenarios, which could have given room to deepen every character, antagonists included. Honestly I think Freedom Planet would be forgotten by now had they not made the world it has, I mean I certainly can't stop thinking about the possibilities.

2's story is fine and my main issues come down to what it doesn't tap into. At face it's still a perfectly solid adventure story with a fun cast of characters, I understand having issues but I don't know what is "absolutely terrible" about it unless you just hate a good time. I think it's important that they continue to tell a story, if anything. The gameplay will always be here but I respect anyone who is willing to try and tell their story even if it isn't what others came for. I thought 2's story was a marked improvement over 1's, with more charming character writing and plenty of fun moments, and that wouldn't have happened at all if they caved into people like you who tear apart a narrative then say "i didnt care so don't bother"
