Using my own herbs is one of my favorite parts of growing my own food! Today I'm using my Sun Oven to dehydrate oregano by harnessing the power of the sun! :D

Did you know that clover is fixing nitrogen into your soil? That's a nice example of companion planting. Very healthy herbs! Your clover looks like the wood sorrel variety. Thanks for the demo!

I am already dehydrating my herbs, too. My dehydrator broke, so I am trying the air drying method and it is working. Usually our humidity is too high but this drought is allowing for the perfect environment to dry herbs without mildew and mold forming.

Thanks Amanda! We just got our All American Sun Oven right before you did so I haven't dehydrated anything. My oregano is growing like crazy...so is my sage, rosemary etc. Loved this video and it was right on time....time to remember I have it and to get busy using it. I may have to put it i front of the door lol!! ❤

I dehydrate all the time but have never seen a sun oven video where someone is dehydrating herbs. It works well & goes much faster than a indoor dehydrator. I live in western NY where it is very cloudy most of the time. A sun oven would not work very well here. Loved your video.

Wonderful! I wonder if you can make oil with some of it. It was nice to replace all my herbs in the spice cabinet with my home grown stuff.

Have you tried crushing a handful at a time, rather than one stem at a time? I haven't yet dehydrated herbs. Thanks for reminding us how easy it is.

I have never seen oregano that grows like that!! What type is it? It looks so much like mint! My three types of oregano don’t have leaves hat beautiful. The ones I have have smaller and more of a trailing growth opposed to upright, except for the Cuban oregano that have thick succulent like leaves. Beautiful herb bed!

I have a question, my dehydrator only goes up to 165 and I dry my herbs at 115. Doesn't drying them at such a high temperature decrease the nutritional benefits and change the taste?
@HearthandDome
@HearthandDome 6 жыл бұрын
Well, when you cook with your dried herbs they're going to get hotter than 165 in most dishes anyway.. So if heat DOES decrease the nutritional benefits, it happens before consumption anyway. As long as you aren't burning your herbs there should be no difference in taste. Great questions! :) Thanks for watching!

How long will that oregano last in storage if you didn't make Italian seasoning?
@HearthandDome
@HearthandDome 6 жыл бұрын
As long as they stay dry, I would guess years... Dried herbs in the store are on the shelves forever! I use my home dried herbs within a year or two and have never had them go bad. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
