This is such great content! I work in consulting in US and totally understsnd your take on hours, its actually pretty common here too. But the whole timesheet/hour part is also what I don't like because it does not incentivize efficiency...Anyways, this is so helpful. I am moving to Tokyo in a couple months and looking forward to the freelance struggles (or may be even consulting type startup 🤔? Have you thought about just registering yourself as a company?). I am more into data engineering though so it would be interesting to see how the data scene differs fron software engineering in Tokyo. Anyways, thanks a lot for sharing ❤

Cheers man! Yeah, about efficiency. The larger the company the less efficient they are. They get billed the highest. It's probably the same with consulting. There are tricks with the timesheet like bloating times or adding in meetings. It's cheaper to overpay a competent worker than hire and fire a cheap bad worker. Good on you for moving to Tokyo. If you are experienced then consulting is a great gig in Tokyo. I will start my own company once my PR is issued. It's already taking 9 months... I don't have data science experience but I'm guessing if you are good at consulting should be no problem getting projects. Of course if you Speak Japanese that would make it way easier.

@@devippo You’ve already applied for PR! That’s exciting! I hope it all goes well 🤞. It’s interesting to know about firing and hiring being expensive, it makes sense though. I’ve been working on my Japanese for last 1.5 years everyday after work. But language learning takes time じゃん笑. I will keep at it 🫡 Best of luck to both of us for hopefully starting our own companies one day! If you organize another meetup in the later half of the year, see you then!

Hey Tyrone , I recently discovered your channel and am enjoying the content and your nuance to things. Im not sure if you’ve answered this before. But for freelance specifically (not the wagie life) what Japanese N level do you need ? I’m currently a developer and do work with English speaking companies but believe I have value to give to these Japanese companies as well. Any thoughts is appreciated.

Yo. Sorry for the late reply. I'd say N2 with good communication is enough. The communication part is the most important. Even if they have to dumb down their japanese for you to understand. Also remember a lot of slack and ticket reading will be involved so it depends on the project and who is managing it. In most cases there is a daily stand up / meeting for the tasks done and doing. In that case just wait for your turn and explain.

Also I'd recommend trying to freelance to English speaking companies. The ones you see on deviapn and Tokyo dev. If you see the company then try to direct message or email them your services. You never know.

quick question on the taxes: You said you got the money back for the mistake you made but you said the next year?? You had to wait until the next tax season to get your money back??
